All the other girls at Miss Minchin's school treat Sara as if she truly were a princess. But when Captain Crewe's fortune is sadly lost, Sara's luck changes. Her own fierce determination to maintain her dignity and remain a princess inside has intrigued and delighted readers for almost a hundred years, even inspiring a recent popular feature film.
Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote for children and adults, publishing both plays and novels. She was born in Manchester, England, on November 24, 1849. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still Excellent I was originally exposed to the movie adaption of this book during my childhood. Having grown up now, I recently read something about the author of this story, and I was curious to see how the original book compared. I must say, it was better. The ending had more detail, which I always appreciate. The fait of Sara's father is altered, and their are a few characters which are cut from the film adaption, and some events are altered and highlighted. Both are still excellent, despite being primarily for children.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wanted to like it more than I did Unpopular opinion, but I liked the 1995 Alfonso Cuaron movie better. I don't know what it was but I just didn't connect to this book like other people did. There was something lacking and I found it really odd that Sara was composed at all times. When she found out that her father died, there was ONE description where she put her arms over her head and sat in silence but there were PAGES describing how she befriended a rat. This rat befriending part occurred after her father died so a rat got more description than her grief over the loss of her only parent/family member. Like what.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Childhood Classic! This novel will always hold a special place in my heart. My grandfather used to read it to me all the time growing up. He even wrote a dedication to me.. it's one of my most treasured possessions. The novel itself has a great message. At times I used to find it hard to read just because of the use the English language because it's from an 'older generation'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My CHILDHOOD. So good. There's love of a book. And then there's love You know when you read a book and it's immediately like your friend? It makes you feel happy, sad, like you want to dance around, like you want to shout YES! to the rooftops, and you literally keep coming back to hang out because you think they're so awesome. That's A Little Princess for me. “Everything's a story - You are a story -I am a story.” I am absolutely in love with Frances Hodgson Burnett's writing first of all. Second of all, THIS BOOK IS THE WISEST CHILDREN'S STORY I'VE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF READING. Like, listen to this: “Perhaps to be able to learn things quickly isn't everything. To be kind is worth a great deal to other people...Lots of clever people have done harm and have been wicked.” When I read this story, I understand what loss feels like. I understand what it means to be kind. I understand that when I am angry, other people feel like me too. I understand that not everyone is kind. And I understand that I should NEVER give up. I learned how to imagine things and I pretty much learned how to cope when I couldn't handle things when I was little. Sara's story is so hopeful to me and my heart has so many feels every time I read it. I just can't let go of this story! “But I suppose there might be good in things, even if we don't see it.”

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A childhood must! It was one of my favourite movies as a child and the book will always have this special place in my heart. As a proud daddy's girl myself, I could totally relate to her and was absolutely heartbroken when "you know what" happened. I believe every child should read this book for the wonderful values it shares and teaches us. And I mean…the cover from Puffin In Bloom is to die for!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Those Who Only Read "The Secret Garden" Have Made a Huge Mistake... This book... wow. Beautiful. I cried at the melancholy parts, thinking how cruel everyone was to little Sara. But wait, I reminded myself, this is only a story. But a wonderful one, indeed. At times I had to remind myself that, like a dream, this book was not true, no matter how rich the descriptions were, and how they made me feel. This book is a miracle to literature. If you have only read "The Secret Garden", you've made a gigantic mistake.
