Rated 4 out of 5 by from A wonderful look at west coast wildlife Ms. Penn is a naturalist and journalist. This collection of columns from her journalism career traces her outdoor adventures with west coast wildlife though a full calendar year. The reader is introduced to the importance of nurse logs to renewing forests, the ecology of the berry patch and Penn's ongoing battle with starlings. Her writing style is lucid, passionate and often very humorous. Well worth reading for those who wish to gain a better understanding of west coast ecology, or merely those who wish a good entertaining read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Interesting, funny, beautifully written I'm an urban woman with a love of nature. This book is an excellent way to learn about the amazing things going on around us all the time. But it's also more than that. Briony Penn is a true artist with words (and with paint, which is also part of this book). The writing is beautiful and sometimes takes you beyond the subject at hand (slugs, the arbutus tree, frogs) to thoughts about what it is to be alive and human. Very highly recommended.
