When their daughter Blanca embarks on a forbidden love affair in defiance of her implacable father, the result is an unexpected gift to Esteban: his adored granddaughter Alba, a beautiful and strong-willed child who will lead her family and her country into a revolutionary future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A long time coming... This book was required reading (in Spanish) for my Honours Spanish program, but we never got around to reading it. Flash forward 15 years and my Spanish is a bit rusty. I got the English version and I really enjoyed it. Such an great example of Latin American literature, and an interesting glimpse into Chilean politics.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Page-turner but anticlimactic I could not put this book down, mostly because of Allende's masterful writing ability, yet for such an original and evocative story the ending is quite cliche.
