#1 New York Times Bestseller

"Amy Schumer's book will make you love her even more. For a comedian of unbridled (and generally hilarious) causticity, Schumer has written a probing, confessional, unguarded, and, yes, majorly humanizing non-memoir, a book that trades less on sarcasm, and more on emotional resonance." —Vogue

"The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo is an alternatingly meditative, sexually explicit, side-splittingly hilarious, heart-wrenching, disturbing, passionately political, and always staggeringly authentic ride through the highs and lows of the comedic powerhouse's life to date." —Harper's Bazaar

"This is your happy hour with Amy Schumer...It's Bossypants meets Trainwreck meets your long weekend." —TheSkimm

“Amy’s got your back. She’s in your corner. She’s an honesty bomb. And she’s coming for you.
—Actress Tilda Swinton and Trainwreck co-star

The Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star of Inside Amy Schumer and the acclaimed film Trainwreck has taken the entertainment world by storm with her winning blend of smart, satirical humor. Now, Amy Schumer has written a refreshingly candid and uproariously funny collection of (extremely) personal and observational essays.

In The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and sex and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is—a woman with the courage to bare her soul to stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh.

Ranging from the raucous to the romantic, the heartfelt to the harrowing, this highly entertaining and universally appealing collection is the literary equivalent of a night out with your best friend—an unforgettable and fun adventure that you wish could last forever. Whether she’s experiencing lust-at-first-sight while in the airport security line, sharing her own views on love and marriage, admitting to being an introvert, or discovering her cross-fit instructor’s secret bad habit, Amy Schumer proves to be a bighearted, brave, and thoughtful storyteller that will leave you nodding your head in recognition, laughing out loud, and sobbing uncontrollably—but only because it’s over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious & Dark Let Amy lead you through her past and present, all the things she's worked for and all the things she aims to achieve.
Date published: 2017-01-15
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Entertaining read Funny - per Schumer - but lacks the spontaneity of standup. Still good though.
Date published: 2017-01-15
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't bother? It was fine, but nothing sucked me in. Most of the humour was lost based on it being text and it didn't come across as witty or funny as I expected. Somewhat seemed like it was trying too hard, while at other times was bland and removed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! Standing ovation for Amy Schumer! I went into this knowing absolutely nothing about her and came out holding her in such high regard. I would love to go back and give this to my teenage self, but I'll take it now too. She's a comedian, so of course it's funny, but it's so much more than that. These essays are touching, heartbreaking, smart and affirming. A celebration of being human, with all the flaws and wonders that come with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good memoir, essay style book I could take or leave Amy Schumer but I do need to give her props for this novel. It is eye opening and hilarious, sad and disgusting all at once! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wasn't expecting this......... I am recommending this to every young women I know. I love how she admitted her flaws but that those flaws did not mean she was not worthy of love and respect. She spoke about how she had developed a healthy sense of self worth that still took hits once in a while and how she taught herself how to come back from those blows. Those are messages every person needs to hear and internalize. Amy spreads this message through telling stories from her life; funny, entertaining, sad, and poignant stories.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Surprisingly intelligent but still so vulgar A feminist manifesto concealed in a comedy book. Still funny and super vulgar but also very women focused and poignant. 3/5
Date published: 2017-01-11
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very funny, very real Amy opens up in the autobiography. There were moments when I thought 'ok, that's a little too much information..." BUT HEY, thats what she does on stage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Laugh out Loud A light-hearted easy read, good to make you laugh out loud!
Date published: 2017-01-10
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read! If you're in the mood for an easier yet interesting read, this is the book for you! While the book touches many darker topics such as gun laws and MS, Amy's book was still extremely funny. Definitely recommend!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from She's jokes SOMETIMES Amy Schumer is too much for me, but this book was a perfect balance between hilarious and oh.. I"m not really feeling this. I didn't like every anecdote/topic explored in this book but overall it was a good read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo Amy Schumer is just the BEST. If you’re not 100% sold on her raunchy brand of humor, read her book and prepare to be totally convinced of her awesomeness. If you thought her book would simply be a series of vag jokes, you thought wrong. What most impressed me: she can switch gears from funny to serious and back again with no lapse in momentum. A list of topics Amy covers in the book would be downright depressing: rape, terminal illness, bad parenting, domestic abuse, and gun violence are all on the menu, and she somehow covers everything in an uproarious way without ever making light of it. How?! Thus is the genius of Amy Schumer.
Date published: 2017-01-09
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light-hearted Read This isn't the type of book that you are going to read all in one night or week. I have read this book a chapter at a time every so often and love it. Amy did an excellent job allowing the readers to get to know her as well as her life. I find moments in this book very down to earth and funny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It! Bought this book on a whim, and I absolutely loved it! Much deeper and more honest than I expected it to be.
Date published: 2017-01-07
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow to start but keep going! I loved this book. And I love Amy Schumer. Her essays range from the treatment of women in mainstream magazines to her dad living with multiple sclerosis and everything in between (ya wanna read about what her vagina smells like, read on!). She's a rockstar in that she is unafraid to be herself: flawed, loving, funny, gross, active, pasta-lover, introverted. And her ability to be vulnerable (and real!) has allowed us to go a little more in that direction, too.
Date published: 2017-01-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving this book! Fun read, hard to put down! Great way to unwind after a long day with a good laugh..this book will make you love Amy Schumer even more than you already did - which I didn't think was possible! #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from not what i expected more autobiographical than expected and much darker but a very good read. you'll definitely laugh and you may even shed a tear but it was enjoyable. I enjoy her stand-up and her television show and now I enjoy her as a writer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another side to Amy This book was in my hands for three days. I really appreciated the look into Amy's life on a deeper level. It is still filled with jokes and her awesome humor, but you get an insight into her past, family, and career that I didn't see coming. It is more serious than funny, and I enjoyed every second.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Wonderful Light Read I love Amy's sense of humour, though wasn't sure what to expect in a book from her. I purchased it thinking that it would hopefully be a lighter, funnier read to get me back into reading as I had gotten away from this much loved hobby recently. I was pleased that my experience was just that. The stories were varied - heartfelt, humourous, expected and unexpected. I've also purchased it for, and recommended it to, various friends.

Date published: 2016-12-19
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not as raunchy as one would expect I bought this book last month, just because it was on sale and wanted to see if it was just as funny as Amy''s stand up. I was not disappointed.
Date published: 2016-12-19
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Casual Read Very down-to-earth and realistic comedy. Relatable experiences and hysterical scenarios make this book great for bringing on the bus or reading during your coffee break. Apart from being a comedic biography, it also pulls at the heart strings and challenges the reader to think and reflect. Overall, I very much enjoyed this book, each chapter was something new and interesting seen through the eyes of someone who deserves to be where she is today.
Date published: 2016-12-17
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disapoinnted I really wanted to like this book. I am not an Amy Schumer fan, but after seeing a really candid interview with her I though maybe her voice will speak louder in words. It didnt engage me the way I had expected compared to other comedians I've read such as Chelsea Handler or Ellen DeGeneres. I think Amy's comedy is most fun when its live and in person, not well translated through this book unfortunately.
Date published: 2016-12-16
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love Amy Schumer She's hilarious, I would honestly recommend anything and everything she has ever done
Date published: 2016-12-16

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent, was expecting more This was a decent read, I guess all the Amy Schumer hype got me really interested and in the end I didn't want to finish the book. I guess it's only good for the huge Schumer fans.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this book! I loved this book. I've been an Amy Schumer fan for a while now so when I heard that she was coming out with a book, I was pumped. I really enjoyed the way that it was written and how the chapters were divided up into topics about her life, all intertwining throughout the book. Would definitely recommend to anyone who has an interest in comedic writing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious Amy Schumer surprised me (in a good way), as The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo was not at all what I was expecting. I was laughing out loud while reading this book, and even forced my husband to listen to parts as I read it aloud to him. I would recommend this book to anyone who has enjoyed Tina Fey or Amy Poehler, as I believe Amy Schumer's book to be far superior.

Date published: 2016-12-09
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A touching look at a talented woman Surprised to discover that Amy Schumer describes herself as an introvert like myself, given her brass sense of humor and risqué topics of conversation. But she needs personal space to decompress after being around others for a show or event. A funny, touching book about her childhood, including a description of her parents' multiple marriages, her father facing MS, and the tragedy of a shooting in the U.S. while her movie "Trainwreck" was being shown in a movie theatre.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Soulful This book was a very nice read. She is very honest about herself, and like many others had said here, it wasn't what I expected. But it was still a pleasure to get to know Amy. I had many flashbacks into my own childhood, and my own experiences, and its nice sometimes to know that you are not alone in those. Unexpected and honest.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unexpectedly Good Before reading this I didn't like or dislike Amy Schumer. However, this book totally changed my opinion of her! It is hilarious at parts and other parts very personal. Often in celebrity memoirs they stay surface level and the writing is often sub-par. But this book was surpassingly very well written and I couldn't put it down. She is honest, funny, and has some great messages tucked in there. Even if you are not a fan I would for sure recommend this book!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hilarious and Relate-able I loved this book because it was a stunning mix of funny and serious, I found myself relating to her and laughing with her all through the book. It really gives you the feeling that shes no different than any other woman. Her struggles, fears and realizations were embarrassing and funny as well as thoughtful and wise and makes you realize that we are really all the same.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth Every Penny! This book was equal parts hilarious, thoughtful, thought provoking and just all around amazing. She takes life's toughest situations and puts them into perspective, makes you think, almost cry, then makes you laugh. It wasn't entirely what I expected (I figured it would be all comedy) and it was so much better. Such an amazing read. Definitely worth it! I'm an even bigger fan of hers since reading this. It's also great to hear how much of her movie Trainwreck was based from real life situations. I rewatched the movie after the book and had a whole new take on it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Funny at times This book was ok. Not as good as I had expected or hoped. Her writing could be improved, but then again she isn't an author so it was ok. There were some funny points that made me laugh out loud so it was worth the read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could be better I find Amy Schumer funny, witty and generally entertaining so I couldn't wait to pick up this book. Yes, she has some hilarious stories in here but I found her writing to be a bit boring and had no trouble putting this book down. Some chapters were just blah which was not what I had expected. Would give it a pass and watch her stand-ups instead.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Read! While there were definitely some laugh-out-loud moments in this book, I'll be honest and say there were some skim-the-chapter-and-move-on moments, too. It was good overall though and I did enjoy it. Oh, and there are also some serous heart-to-heart moments that will make you straight up cry. I didn't skip those.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It was ok.... This book was OK... I mean I laughed a few times but I will say I was expecting more from Amy. For the price of the book I would not recommend, It is one of those books you read then pass on I guess. I felt it was over hyped!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVED THIS As an Amy Schumer fan I thought this was an amazing read! It had be laughing one page and crying another. It was a great insight on Schumer's life, and I also enjoyed how she tackled tough topics like gun violence. I gained a lot of respect for Schumer reading this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If the Schu(mer) Fits I'm giving this a 5/5 because I like Amy Schumer. Her writing isn't the best, in fact I found it pretty terrible, but her stories are entertaining. I liked it because I enjoy biographies and learning about celebrities, but don't go into it expecting amazing prose.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo I'm an Amy Schumer fan, so when I saw she had a book out I just had to read it. To be honest, I was a little disappointed. I understand it's her personal life story, but I felt that the writing was poorly done. It just felt like she was trying a little too hard to make her readers laugh and that took away from her stories. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wanted to love it I really wanted to enjoy this book but it wasn't very funny or entertaining. It wasn't terrible but I wish I had borrowed it from the library and saved my money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Alright This book was ok. The first half of the book was a lot better than the second half. Amy mentioned that it took her five years to write this book, so in the end I was disappointed that it wasn’t as funny as I expected it to be. I still love Amy as a person, actress, and comedian but this book is not one of her best projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious I bought this book basically because the reviews were good and thought it would be an easy read. Amy Schumer has out done herself, I laughed out loud multiple times and could not put it down until I read the last page. Schumer does a wonderful job of explaining her life to her fans with the perfect amount of humour and fun. Besides because super funny Schumer writes about a lot of meaningful life lessons that do not get talked about enough in society. Overall totally worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it Amy Schumer's book is hilarious, and surprisingly insightful. Aside from the typical humour you'd expect given her stand-up and tv shows, she is also aware of her audience, and uses her platform to address important feminist issues, like sexual assault. Her openness is incredible, and provides a realistic glimpse into issues we all face, but with humour and wit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not what you expect (in a good way) The stories I loved most in this book are the ones I hadn't expected to find in it. Schumer writes with an open heart and, of course, makes you laugh but she also makes you cry. At times she is vulnerable, smart, inspiring, heartbreaking, and powerful. She also is vulgar, witty, hilarious, and just downright dirty (in a good way).

Editorial Reviews

"This book is what a selection of personal essays and letters should be, witty, sometimes casual, sometimes achingly sad but always entertaining. This rich, unashamed and slightly strange book should be on your shelf if you have ever wanted to be inside Amy Schumer's head."
