about

Now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts.

MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST
The perennially bestselling, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers.

The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.

The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

Heather's Review

When Jeannette Walls’ father was sober, he was the best dad a kid could ask for, wild and inspiring. But when he was drunk, he would steal, lie, and abandon his family for days at a time. Jeannette’s mom hated the idea of domesticity and motherhood, and from an incredibly young age, Jeannette and her siblings were forced to take care...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Meaningful An astonishing memoir on how alcoholism, mental illness and poverty can effect a family. Jeannette Walls holds nothing back when describing her unbelievable childhood. It's amazing to me how she can write so matter of factly and without resentment for her parents, when I felt so much anger towards them just reading this book. This story is a must read for everyone. 5 stars!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An eye opener I bought The Glass Castle as it peaked my interest as a book to read. I could not believe how someone could raise their children in such surroundings and yet was amazed at how the children survived. I found it truly amazing how the children accepted their lifestyle and finally found the courage to stand up to their parents towards the end.. In some ways, it was valuable lessons of strength and faith that allowed the children to leave and embark on a life of their own while still wanting to help their parents even though they did not want any help at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An incredible tale of resilience and family bonds At times, The Glass Castle is a heavy read, but the sheer resilience of the Walls children is so profoundly moving that I couldn't bring myself to put the book down. Jeannette Walls weaves a captivating account of her life from childhood to adulthood, growing up in poverty to free-wheeling and reckless parents who moved her and her three siblings around the country to avoid bill collectors. It's a heartbreaking story, but Walls finds a way to brilliantly convey the great internal struggle that is remaining loyal to loved whiles while holding them accountable for their actions. A magnificent read - I only wish there was more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lux: oblivion This was a great book that I did not know I needed. At first, I was not sure if I should read it, thinking it is a classical ''write exactly the same thing but the pronoun change'' but it was not the case. It added so much to the story, telling us things that we missed, and adding another aspect of the event that are necessary to understand better the character decison. It was well written, and even in the scene that were in the other books, you have the feeling to read a new story

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This Story... OMG This book hits you in every way possible. Sadness for the family and the children. Anger and pity towards the parents for being in this position... Outraged for allowing the situation especially when you find out the GREAT twist about their mother's little secret. Highly recommend and SO EXCITED about the movie!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down I read this years ago, and it's still one of my favourite books. As I read it I was in disbelief that the events actually happened in Jeannette Walls' life! I really look forward to how they bring it to life in the movie.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reminder to all The Glass Castle is truly the kind of book that appears almost out of the blue but stays in our hearts forever. Written with passion and care, we are allowed to live through Jeanette's childhood as she deals with her alcoholic father who she can't help but stand by, and the rest of her dysfunctional family. The true charm in this novel lies within Jeanette's impeccable ability to recount memories of her parents and siblings and the tribulations that they face, whether it be protecting each other from gropers or running from the police. This story is a one way ticket to a normal day in the lives of the Walls family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from shocked and amazed I just got this thru chapters the other day and I have read half of it basically in one sitting. I have wanted to read it for years but kept putting it off. Now they are making a movie of this woman's story. It's so well written, so full of bare faced truth and yet there is a shocking and often appalling way the parents raised their children. They took personal freedom to a whole new level and yet obviously it shaped who the children are today. I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who wants a truthful, gritty, absorbing read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Possibly one of my favourite reads ever My mother in law original recommended this to me several years ago and I don't think I've read anything since that has resonated with me so much. Reading about Jeanette's childhood is almost hard to believe and yet there are moments that feel familiar and parallel. This truly was an all emotions in, laugh, cry and shake your head book. I've given it as gifts, I've reread it myself and even repurchased it when my copy was lent out and never returned. When life gets tough and I feel I can't scratch to nickles together, I often think about The Glass Castle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Soul-Spoken This memoir of a uniquely dysfunctional family captures the essences of unconditional love, and loyalty within siblings faced with unconventional parents. From the beginning, the travel-ridden family takes the reader to unique settings with unforgettable events. The novel is soul-spoken, and promotes resilience while the young characters make lives for themselves amidst the unknowing and challenging parts of growing up wilder than most.

The book flows so well that you are able to really envision the situations and almost relive the experiences that the character is in. Jeannette Walls makes you feel like you're a part of the family, living through their challenges and overcoming obstacles with them... a heartfelt reminder that everyone has a story worth telling!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Loved this Book I had heard so many good things about this book that I finally decided to buy it and take it with me on a summer vacation. I figured I would be so busy on my trip, that I wouldn't have much time to read it, so it was the only book I brought with me. Lo and behold, I read the first half on the plane and finished it a few short days later because I could not put it down! (I had to buy another book less than halfway through my vacation!). Jeannette Walls' memoir is so beautiful and from the very first page, you become captivated with the lives of the Walls family. I loved this book so much, and have recommended it to all of my friends, who have also loved it. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Book I Will Not Forget! I absolutely could not put this book down. This story is about a young girl's life in her "dysfunctional" family, and how she copes. This book really opened up my perspective on other people's lives, and I know some teachers are even using it in English class to demonstrate this issue of perspective/difference in other lives. I brought this book with me everywhere until I finished it. I think anyone would enjoy this book, but those who love memoirs will especially love this book.
