about

“In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I’ve often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now I’m letting my guard down.” —Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened

For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.

In these pages, she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. With humor and candor, she tells readers what it took to get back on her feet—the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.

She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.

The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermath—both a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.
Hillary Rodham Clinton is the first woman in U.S. history to become the presidential nominee of a major political party. She served as the 67th Secretary of State—from January 21, 2009, until February 1, 2013—after nearly four decades in public service advocating on behalf of children and families as an attorney, First Lady, and Senato...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad Read a lot like a YA novel...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic. I absolutely loved this book. People who say she doesn't take responsibility - seriously, what more do you want??? It's so frustrating that a woman in politics is told to shut up and go away, but no one says that to Mitt Romney, Al Gore or John McCain, who are still kicking, and still have opinions, even after they've lost presidential races (a point Hillary makes better in the book). Everyone should read this book. I loved it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from #ImWithHer Loved this book...loved it! I thought this was a great book, and appreciated her sharing her stories. My heart broke reliving that awful election night, and smiled when she shared the happy times too. Many reviews mention her finger pointing, but the reality is there are many factors outside of her control that lead to her defeat. She takes accountability for her shortcomings and mistakes but she also calls out the interference that took place. So yes, there will obviously be finger pointing. although I did not get the audio version, I could hear her voice very clearly as I read it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic! Bias aside, it was well written, thought provoking and inspirational. For those who are accusatory of finger pointing, you're reading a book written by the nominee who did not win about WHAT HAPPENED, unsure what else you'd expect. The only reason I gave it a 4 star was due to all the name drops along with their respective titles.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth the Read I was a bit worried this book would just be rehashing the 2016 election, but it is beyond insightful! Even assuming writer bias, it was still an amazing (and crushing) narrative on the events that occurred. Wish we got to hear Hillary speak more like this during the campaign!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great read but I'm still not sure "what happened." Loved going through the election process with her but I was saddened by how she put so much blame for her loss on herself in regards to the things that were completely beyond her control.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read! I found this book fascinating. I loved getting a different view of 'what happened' from Hilary herself. She's a beautiful writer and wonderful storyteller. Definitely recommend.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Condescending Clinton will talk about accepting the responsibility for the loss and then immediately point fingers and play the blame game. She lost the election more than Trump won it

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great book!!! I am halfway done and love it!! She's awesome and its a great book, not to heavy on political terms if you aren't familiar with them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Insightful, amazing, and, above all, inspirational. Who to vote for would have been a no brainer if it had come out before the election. It gets my endorsement for most readable and interesting book I've read all year.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interesting read Love her or hate her, it is an interesting read indeed.
Date published: 2017-09-28
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Truly awful and tone deaf It baffles me why someone like Clinton just can't go away. As far as the book goes, all she does is blame other people for her loss. For someone who wanted to be the leader of the free world, she seems wholly incapable and unwilling to accept personal responsibility for her actions. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I liked it. I learned a lot of lessons about being a woman in politics. Like others, did not appreciate the finger pointing. Would reco.
Date published: 2017-09-20
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Insightful. Her perspective on the campaign and her loss was insightful to say the least. Thought for sure there would be more technical snd professional insight.
Date published: 2017-09-19
Rated 1 out of 5 by from NO SHE CANNOT JUST BLAME EVERYONE AS IF IT IS THEIR FAULT! Horrible read! I expected more maturity.
Date published: 2017-09-19
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not what I was expecting I was expecting some very professional insight as to the factors playing into why she lost, but the book just felt very blamey as if it is everyone else's fault. Would not read again
Date published: 2017-09-16
Rated 3 out of 5 by from On the fence Not quite what I was expecting. Many factors are to blame for her loss (unfortunately) but finger pointing will not earn you votes or trust.
Date published: 2017-09-14
Rated 1 out of 5 by from After reading this with a critical mind I was expecting more than blame and finger pointing. It's pathetic and immature that Clinton can't accept personal responsibility for her loss. She was a terrible candidate and had a hard time defeating Bernie. Only for the super-delegates in California, Bernie would have beaten her. But, according to Hillary, 'What Happened' was ... Suburban women didn't like her The Russians interferred The FBI and James Comey Facebook Twitter Wikileaks Bernie Sanders TV Executives Cable News Fake News The Democrats The Republicans Low informed voters The 'Deplorables' Content farms in Macedonia Obama winning two terms Bad polling numbers But of course Donald Trump didn't play any part in her losing. She simply did not connect with people. To her it was like she had an entitlement because of her name.

Date published: 2017-09-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting Interesting read, Not a whole lot about what happened that's not already available if you look. She still does not seem to want to shoulder any of the blame for her loss.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good read! hard to be a women in politics!
