Customer Reviews of Beneath the Skins

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thought Provoking This is an outstanding book for anyone involved in the kink community from more than just a ‘so when is the next bar night?’ perspective. In this book Ivo Dominguez explores a number of politically-charged topics. You may or may not agree with all of his conclusions and approaches, but it’s a great book to encourage conversation, and to bring up ideas to think about and discuss within our communities. Some of the different essays in this book include “Three Gay Male Archetypes” – which begins with a soul-touching description of a ritual which acknowledges the three archetypes. There is also “Pride Day: Where Should We Be?”, “Kink as Orientation”, and “A Second Coming Out – Does the Metaphor Apply?” among a number of others. This book is on my bookshelf, multiple bookmarks throughout. Just as I did in school, and as my grandfather used to do, there’s notes in the margins, highlights and pencilled in underlines. Although this book has a strong Leather perspective, it’s also fascinating, useful, and thought-provoking for non-Leather individuals. It gives real examples of useful tools and successful models – rather than just wallowing in the problems that exist in our communities. An excellent collection of essays – highly recommended.
