The first book of the #1 New York Times bestselling series and the inspiration for the hit movie from Dreamworks!

John Smith seems like an ordinary teenager, living a normal life with his guardian Henri in Paradise, Ohio. But for John, keeping a low profile is essential, because he is not an ordinary teenager. He’s an alien from the planet Lorien, and he’s on the run. A group of evil aliens from the planet Mogadore, who destroyed his world, are hunting anyone who escaped.

Nine Loric children were sent to Earth to live in hiding until they grew up and developed their Legacies, powers that would help them fight back—and help them save us. Three of them are now dead. John is Number Four, and he knows he’s next….

Michael Bay, director of Transformers, raved: “Number Four is a hero for this generation.” This epic story is perfect for fans of action-packed science fiction like The 5th Wave series by Rick Yancey, The Maze Runner series by James Dashner, and Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game.

The battle for Earth’s survival wages on. Read all of the books: #2: The Power of Six, #3: The Rise of Nine, #4: The Fall of Five, #5: The Revenge of Seven, #6: The Fate of Ten, and #7: United as One.

Don’t miss the first book in the brand-new I Am Number Four spin-off series: Generation One.

Pittacus Lore is Lorien's ruling Elder. He has been on Earth preparing for the war that will decide Earth's fate. His whereabouts are unknown.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Alright This was a good book, it wasn't the best series that I've ever read but I found it right on par with Enders Game which is another book I enjoyed but didn't go rushing out for the sequel for. In this book it does have a little bit of a weird vibe for me, I don't know how it is in the Sates but at 15 if there was a party where everyone was drunk we would have had our asses handed to us, let alone one where they burnt the house down. I don't know, it feels like the characters should be 16-17 instead of 15-16. Overall it had a good plot and development, there are interesting powers and a manhunt going on that keeps your interested. I found the romance factor was unneeded, though I do understand why it was put in. Sarah to me is a very bland character, though 'John' aka Number Four, shows that he is not only a strong character physically but mentally as well and well-aware of his emotions. I'm giving this book a 4/5, it was a good book, I don't regret reading it, but I do feel like some things seemed a bit 'off'. While I would probably pick up the second book if I found it while browsing, it's not something I'm rushing out to buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Original and Thrilling With a unique story and multiple perspectives, I am Number Four is extremely engaging and drives you to read the whole series! Great plot twists and battles keep you on your toes. The bouts of romance are super cheesy, but it doesn't take away from the overall greatness.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I enjoyed it! i enjoyed the concept of this book, but i have to admit, the movie was awful - didn't follow the storyline at all, and i understand that it was filmed before the book was even finished to be published. A great novel movie gone to waste. This would've made a great film series!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the Start of Something Amazing! My heart hurts after that ending but boy was this book amazing! I loved every aspect of this story and the character developments. I often found myself thinking of the movie (because stupid me watched it way before reading it and actually liked the movie!). Despite now realizing the movie wasn't as good as I thought it was, I did like the fact that I could put faces to names and kind of picture some scenes in my head. I fell in love with this story and the life John was building and so wished he could stay in Paradise and have that happy life with Sarah and Henri and Bernie Kosar. I cannot wait to see where they go from here though and further learn more about some of these characters (I'm still crying at the moment), especially Sam.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Many Books! I loved the first one in the series and really liked the second, but I haven't been able to keep up with them all. The first one was great, unique and yet familiar, and I loved Henri.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad I read this while stuck in a car on the way to Florida, and it kept me engaged, but I found several plot points (like the protagonists's romance) a little hard to swallow. Be prepared for several eye rolls as you're reading, but I've read worse.
Date published: 2017-01-30
Rated 4 out of 5 by from much better than i thought it would be The core characters were great and the story really surprised me. I heard the movie wasn't as good though. Strong start to a series (a very looonggg series).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting It's hard to write book reviews while trying not to give anything away. This book was good and made me eager to read the sequels. I recommend it definitely in the YA category, but I'm an adult and I enjoyed it too.
Date published: 2017-01-25
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best book ever I recommend it to everyone!!!!!!!!! I bought this book a couple years ago after hearing about it from a friend. I am usually note into books about aliens but this book was a rare acceptation. I loved it so much that I went out and bought the others all at ones. Every single one of the books in the series kept me on edge and when I finished book four, The Fall Of Five, I had a very hard time waiting for the next couple of books to come out, the Revenge Of Seven and the Fate Of Ten, and then an even harder time waiting for the last book, United as one. However, they were worth the wait. I recommended these books to my friends and some people at my school (teachers included) and they all enjoyed them as much as me. I am number four is a great book that I would recommend to anyone in search of a good series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't Put It Down!! I began reading the series a few years ago, so I stopped to wait for all of the books to be released. Reboot 2017: going through the entire series now!! I could not put this book down and had it read within a couple of days, staying up well past midnight because I just didn't want to go to bed without knowing what was going to happen next. As an adult who loves reading these teen books, I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for some adventure and a solid story line #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved It! Was definitely one of the best teen series I've read and would reach to others to read this series.
Date published: 2017-01-12
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the plot I love the series. there could be more "rules" (limits) for when the Gard use their powers. But i like on how the books also have the author in them.
Date published: 2017-01-12
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Are You Looking For A Series? I wanted to write this review after completing the series that way I could give as much info as I could. The series as a whole was incredible, I loved all of it and read it as quickly as I could get my hands on the next books! It does indeed fall under the more teen type book but even as an adult I enjoyed this. I like fiction and adventures and I want books to take me away. This series provided me with many different group dynamics, interesting character development, and adventure filled with backstory from a far off plant and a little bit of romance (which is always enjoyable). Mind you, if you are interested in this book be prepared for a series. There are seven books in total, some parts may seem long but as a whole they definitely keep your heart pumping. I am happy to have these on a high shelf in my library.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ....... At the beginning I was so enthralled with this book but then the excitement wore off. The actions of the main character were confusing at times because they somewhat contradict what he previously said. while I did not enjoy the middle of the book very much I was very invested in the characters. Unfortunately my favorite character from this book was not the main character ad will not be in the rest of the series therefore I don't think I will be finishing the series. Overall the book was engaging.
Date published: 2017-01-02

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Teen Read I loved reading this book. I found it super interesting and original. One thing I found weird: the choice of the name 'John Smith'. For the main character I would expect a more original name. Too late now but it was a seriously great book. Would definitely recommend for teens and lovers of sci-fi.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Suspensful! BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ! I liked this book so much, because it had a good balance of calm, and crazy moments. The main character, John, has feelings that are relatable (even for us as humans). I'm not usually into Sci-Fi books, but this book isn't Sci-Fi, I would say it's more drama and romance. I would suggest this book to people who like Divergent, The Hunger Games, and people who like dystopias.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I AM NUMBER FOUR I read the preview and Loved It so much. I don't think that it is a difficult book to read, it is clear and understandable. I think that it is good for young teens and older. Unless you are a good reader with a good vocabulary. There are many difficult words that are in this book, so be prepared to use your dictionary. I hope this has helped some of you! Overall a great read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Action, Adventure... Aliens? If you haven’t heard about the book, you might know about the movie. I am number four, by: Pittacus Lore. In my opinion this book was amazing! This review will be telling you about why I really enjoyed this book. The book “ I Am Number Four” is a great teen read, full of action and intensity, and is great for both boys and girls. This book has to be one of my favourites because it has been created into a movie and because of all of its amazing qualities, for example: mystery, action, (e.t.c) General points: This book is not only great for pre-teens, and teens, but it is an amazing example of an extreme original book, my thoughts are this because not that many books are about an alien boy that comes to Earth because he is about to be killed by the “Mogadorians.” This book is not based on any real events, all is fictional, but by the way the author, Pittacus Lore, is describing the events placed in this story makes it feel fully realistic ( In my opinion) Other than that, this story is mainly about a boy named John Smith Living with his “ Guardian.” Henri, but this boy’s life isn’t anything normal, he ( John Smith) has many adventures, up’s and down’s and faces many problems. The most important characters that star in this book are: John Smith, Henri, Sarah, Mark, and Sam. Each and every character plays an important role in this book, but Henri and John Smith are really the most important. If you don’t know, maybe you should. This book is also a movie! This movie is based on I am number four, by Pittacus Lore. Just to let you know that John Smith is played by Alex Pettyfer, and Henri is played by Timothy Olyphant. Thus, the book “ I Am Number Four.” By: Pittacus Lore, to me is one of the best books I have ever read! I don’t know about you, but I would totally recommend this to all my friends, and I already have. So overall this book is great! Fantastic! Original!, And it deserves so many great words that I cannot even think of enough! My overall rating is.... a 4.8 out of 5.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing! I honestly wish there were more alien books out there, because I love the Lorien Legacies. I Am Number Four first caught my eye in the book store because of the interesting title, and when I say interesting, I say downright cool. I thought it was the most exciting thing I'd seen in a long time. The cover looks like it's glowing! I bought it on the spot, and read it in a day, and then the movie came out (which I thoroughly enjoyed). The Lorien Legacies has to be one of my favourite series up to date. There's so much to love, but I also have a few qualms as well. The concept for this book is awesome. As a first-person narrative, John Smith, aka Number Four, is a fugitive on Earth because his home planet, Lorien, was destroyed by another planet's race of Mogadorians. He seems a little discouraged and defeated in the beginning of the book because it's just a day in the life of always moving, travelling, making no friends. The only company he has is his Cêpan, or guardian, Henri. Their relationship seems very genuine and loving, like a father and son (even though they are not related), which I loved. John remembers little from his home planet, and wants to create a life for himself on Earth. When Number Three is killed, Henri and John move to a small town in Ohio, Paradise. There John meets the love interest, Sarah Hart, and his new friend, Sam, and tries to come to terms with his powers and his future on Earth. I loved Sam, in the book and in the movie. He was also stuck in a state of being discouraged and defeated, by bullying and by the disappearance of his father, until he meets John, who inspires courage and hope in his new pal. He's a loyal friend who happens to have an obsession with the extra-terrestrial. Duh duh duuuun. Sarah Hart...how do I put this? She's nice...way too nice. She honestly has no personality for me except that she likes photography and saving homeless animals. I was kind of sick of their romance halfway through the book. Too cutesy and shallow for me. I'm good with a book with very little romance, and for me, I Am Number Four could have done without it, or had a better female lead who wasn't a total airhead. Dianna Agron played a much better (and snarkier) Sarah in the movie. The action parts were my favourite, especially with John learning how to use his Legacies, or special abilities, that some of the people on Lorien are born with. The movie messes up his powers (boo), and actually forgets one altogether, which is too bad, because it's my favourite. There's an epic battle scene at the end, and the suspense practically kills you beforehand because everything is amped up as John struggles emotionally and physically to stay in Paradise. Give this book a shot! It's got a ton of action, great characters, and a cute romance (personally not the kind of romance I like, but I'm sure others will enjoy John and Sarah together). John experiences a lot of personal growth and realization about his place on Earth and the fate of Lorien, but leaves a lot of mystery and anticipation for the next books. I'm giving this four ballons out of five because I did not like Sarah, but I loved everything else!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful!! I really enjoyed this book. It was action packed and suspenseful and a bit of a tear jerker (for me anyway). It was good though there were some parts in the story that I felt were either rushed or dragged out but it was well written for the most part. If you are into sci-fi alien books, this one may be for you! **The second book is better than this one I believe. It introduces Six, Sam and Marina! There is way more action so read this book!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun Wild Ride Mini Book Review: Really enjoyed this one. The writing isn't the best, but the fast paced interesting plot really makes up for it. The characters are interesting and likeable and the story is non stop action with some humour and romance tossed in. My only real complaint, and not really much a complaint more of a a personal preference, is the love scenes are nauseatingly mushy. But you have to remember I am a 41 yr old women and these books are written for young teens. I was hooked in from the opening chapter and did not want to put the book down I was so engrossed in the excitement of the story. In fact I figured I was going to finish the book on the bus ride home so I purchased (For my Kobo) The Power of Six just in case my commute went a little longer. Highly recommend for teens and even adults who just enjoy a good story. Perfect book for a day at the beach. Now must go and read some more of The Power of Six on my lunch break. 4.5 Dewey's I purchased this for my Kobo (on suggestion from Liam)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting Premise I enjoyed reading I Am Number Four - it is a different, entertaining story. There was excitement, interesting storytelling, and romance. That being said, I also felt like something was lacking, that the book had a potential that it didn't quite live up to. I thought the premise was fun and intriguing - John is number four of nine aliens from the planet Lorien who arrive on earth about ten years ago with their caregivers fleeing from the Mogadorian invasion that decimates their planet. These nine are entrusted with the responsibility of survival and eventual rebuilding of their planet and culture. The Mogadorians, however, have tracked them to earth an are killing them, but, because of a charm placed on them, they must be killed in order. One, two and three have been killed and John is next on the list. Then, it turns out, more may even be at stake, as the Mogadorians may be trying to take over the Earth as well. The writing in the book was, at times, amazing and beautiful, and at other times repetitive. There were also a number of sentence fragments which stopped me in my tracks. Mostly I found the beginning and the ending interesting, with it dragging in the middle a bit. There are also a few things that didn't make sense, for example, his dog. John is supposed to be hypersensitive to anything strange going on in his life and he doesn't think it strange that his dog takes off into the woods and appears in an impossible location several seconds later? The story is told in first person present from John's point of view, something which is very popular these days. This is the first book of this type, with this amount of romance told from a boy's point of view that I have read, so that was different. Out of all the characters, I found John's friend, Sam, to be the most interesting. He is quirky and nerdy, but develops a great deal in the book. I really felt for him and the loss of his dad. It looks like he will be in the next book, for which I am grateful. I Am Number Four is the first in a planned series of six. The second book, The Power of Six, has recently been released. I am quite anxious to see where this story goes next.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worth the read The book really did grab my attention. At first. The idea and concept was interesting yet for some reason I can’t help but think I’m reading about Superman and his teen years in Smallville. That’s not to say the book was bad, it was good, yet there just some parts in it where it made me think why the hype over this book? The writing was good. I liked how John started developing his powers throughout the book. It was also nice to see that he wasn’t about to be bullied around by Mark (who’s a total twit but he eventually does learn the error of his ways). He does stick up for himself and does fight back so at least he’s got a backbone. He is likable although he’s your average every day kid with superpowers. However I couldn’t really entirely like him as a character, it just seemed as if he was lacking in personality and there wasn’t much to him except that he was not from Earth and has tremendous super powers. I really did prefer the sidekicks in this novel; Henri, Bernie Kosar, and Sam. All three were my favorites. Both Henri and Bernie deserve a lot of kudos for what they went through for John (and their actions literally drove me to tears). Sam also proved to be a very loyal friend and pull through for John, and their friendship is a good one. It does give John a nice stable element in his life where he’s always had to pick up his bags and go whenever things were to go wrong. The plot was all right. It was really exciting and fast paced for the first part of the novel and as John learns new skills, and learns about his home world and people, you learn more about his background and why he’s here with Henri. I liked reading this part of the book, and it also gives you information on Henri and what his purpose is. Everything seems to be going well, including a couple of scraps with Mark, and some troubles with hiding his real identity. Then throughout approximately halfway through the pace slows down. John’s fallen in love. For some reason this just slows down everything and it gets annoying and infuriating. John seems to be oblivious to the danger surrounding him, and his romance with Sarah, although sweet, just seems to be more of a page filler than anything else. At this point of the book, I was starting to get frustrated. I don’t really give a dime about Sarah and John. There’s killers out there out for John’s head and all he’s really caring about is when the next time he gets to see Sarah. Oh for crying out loud. Really? you have to have pages and pages of this? I stuck with it, and tolerated it, in the hopes I’ll get rewarded in the end. Yes, I was rewarded! the last third of the novel focuses on a lot of action (and I mean A LOT) and when another of John’s kind comes into the picture the action is increased threefold. I loved reading this part. There was so much going on at once but it was such a gripping read you couldn’t tear yourself away. The ending doesn’t really leave the reader in a cliffhanger but it does point the way for the second book. Even though the pace does slow down midway, sticking through with it does end up being rewarding. It is a good book for young adult readers and I’m wanting to know what’s going to happen next. From what I hear, I’d read the book first then see the movie.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not My Cup of Tea I was so excited to read this book because so many people told me how much they had liked it. However, I thought that there were plot holes and the book fell below my expectations. The text kind of annoyed me, and there were a few characters I wanted to beat with a stick. Not my cup of tea.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Am Number Four To be honest I don't read a lot of teen novels and I only read this one because I got it for free. For the most part it was a pretty good read. There are some parts where the language is very simple, but it is a good and easy summer read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay. I heard it was going to be made into a movie so I thought "Why not read the book and then compare?" I admit it's not a rare situation, but I thought I'd put it out there how I came to discovering this book. Haha. I like the idea. Actually, I think it's pretty interesting. As dangerous as it might be, I would love to be one of them. Ahhh, I'll keep imagining. I agree with Raina. Sometimes it gets confusing as to who is saying what and then I have to read it over several times. Got annoying but I eventually got it. There's a typical love story as in all books but I felt it was weak. Too close too fast. Overall, I liked it. Not boring but not a "pull you in immediately" kind of book.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from O.K. This book is okay and aside from a few minor details the movie stays very close. It's a quick read but reads like it should be a series. You just start to really get into it when it ends. John's narration at times is a bit inconsistent and you're not really sure who's telling the story at some parts. There are little details intended to be clues to the bigger plot that can be easily missed- the movie did a better job at rounding those out. Not a bad read, nice quick one for the summer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! Seriously, it was amazing. I really did enjoy it, infact I enjoyed it so much I created an account just so I could write a review on it. I've noticed a couple reviews thought there was a lack of character development, however I must disagree. I feel I knew a lot about "John Smith" more than what people in Ohio new about him. As I reader, we knew what was going on, what he was feeling, and the strugle with the legacies and the such. There was enough character development, in my opinion. On a second note, I enjoyed the plot and the action-packed scenes. I must admit, the romance between John and Sarah were cute. I've been wanting to read this, and just finally picked it up. Thought i'd read it before the movie comes out. I'm very glad I did, as it was a great book. One that will stay with me for a while. I too cried when ****** died. I bawled actually. I liked ****** he was an awesome cepan ^.^ RECCOMEND!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from no so good I read the book in about 2 days. I had my hopes high because it was made into a movie and I wanted to read it before watching it But, it turned out really disappointing. The whole number four thing was cool and mysterious, but as you read on the characters are dull and boring. It's just another boring love story, the action was not intense and the love was strong enough. So I don't even know if I want to watch the movie anymore. It just seems like books are usually better than movies, but the book wasn't really good so i don't think the movie would be any better.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I Am Number Four To be honest, I really didn't find anything special about this book. It was mediocre at best. I decided to read it when I heard a movie was being made, because usually books that have films made from them are fairly good, but I was very disappointed. The plot just wasn't interesting. It definitely had the potential to be, but the characters were all flat so the plot never had a chance to be brought to life. I really felt nothing for the characters, and although there were a few interesting action parts, I usually found it sort of hard to imagine the scenes. I'm not sure why. That being said, at least I did finish the book instead of giving up half way, which I've done before. So I guess it wasn't the worst book I've ever read, but I think I could recommend better ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing The book itself was amazing to read, but the series is probably one of the best ideas so far. All the books that are in right now are about vampires, werewolves, angels. Creatures that relate to myth, but what about the creatures that relate to science? Pittacus Lore brought in a new perspective to aliens. Not the stereotypical ones we've seen in movies and shows. Who would ever thought that aliens could look human? I would defintely recommend the series to people who enjoy sci-fi, obviously, but if you're the type of person who loves to read about a fight to save the world... you'll definitely enjoy The Lorien Legacies. Even though the writing wasn't the best, don't forget it's in the perspective of Number Four. An alien who probably never experienced a ton of emotions. Do you expect him to understand the emotions of Earth. Nearing the end of the book I found that maybe John got more emotional just a bit, but I don't judge on how well they write. I judge on how they get their idea across. Normally, if it's too over-dramatic I just wanna puke or skim through.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick Read I found this book to be very enjoyable. It was engaing and I read it in two days, wanting to know what happened. The only draw back, that has been previously mentioned, is the writing style it is very plain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First compulsive read since Hunger Games I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story line was so engaging I finished it in less than 3 days. I won't go into details on what the story is about, it's all covered here, but it's fast paced and I feel fairly well written. I look forward to the rest. I agree that there could have been some more development of the supporting characters, but I don't think that the writing was so bad to take away from the story.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh...? Of all the cookie-cutter teen books, this one actually has an engaging, original plot. But that's about where the good stuff stops. The writing style is frustratingly juvenile, it lacks description, emotion, a little personality to its characters. Each character speaks in the same voice, with the same vocabulary. A good writer should sweep you up with rich detail and rateable characters, making you feel for them. These people are flat and uninteresting, the romance has no chemistry at all and when someone dies I wasn't upset at all. Not even a little, just "Meh." "Pittacus Lore" is lacking that special something that makes a great book. The potential is there, but it feels like this would have been great if another writer, someone with talent like Suzanne Collins, took the plot and wrote it well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing story that will stay in your head days after! I honestly could not put down this book. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Introducing a brand new world ... That has just been destroyed. Number Four, otherwise known as John, is on the run from the Mogadorians. He is from the planet Lorien that was destroyed by the Mogadorians years ago, and he now lives on Earth with his Cepan and protector, Henri. There were nine of them in the beginning when they escaped their planet and hid themselves on Earth, but now the Mogadorians have chased them to their hideaway and are tracking each of them down. They must be killed in order from Number One to Number Nine, and three are already dead. With his powers beginning to emerge, John follows Henri and together they move to a small town called Paradise in Ohio, hoping to hide and lead a quiet new life. But the Mogadorians are intent on tracking them down, and they will stop at nothing to kill each of them off and destroy Earth in the process. This book had a brilliant story that led up to the climax very well and kept you reading and reading as the suspense built up. However, the writing was not the best, and it ruined the book for me. There is so much potential to this series, but Lore has to step his game up and write better with more emotions, dialogue, thoughts, and detail. If he can improve on the next few books, this will become an amazing series. For now, it is just so-so.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantasy with superpowers... This book is a fairly quick read for those in the mood for escapism. The author wastes no time engaging us in the story of an orphaned alien that has escaped his dying planet by rocket and is hiding on Earth from other nasty aliens that would see him dead (and, no, his name is not Clark Kent). In this endeavour, our hero is assisted by a sort of steward/guardian who takes care of the logisitics with each move. John, the alien in question, is about fifteen years old and he is just starting to manifest his powers - sort of like superhero puberty. He is one of several orphans on Earth but the bad guys can only kill them in a certain numeric order. Thus the title - John is number four - and one to three are already dead. A well-crafted story in all with a very climatic ending (although a little over the top). Still... if you like comics, you will like this. It is going to be a series as well as a major film in 2011. Now is your chance to look into this soon-to-be franchise.
