#1 New York Times bestselling author John Grisham’s newest legal thriller takes you inside a law firm that’s on shaky ground.

“[A] buoyant, mischievous thriller . . . Grisham writes in such an inventive spirit. . . . A treat.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times
** **
Mark, Todd, and Zola came to law school to change the world, to make it a better place. But now, as third-year students, these close friends realize they have been duped. They all borrowed heavily to attend a third-tier for-profit law school so mediocre that its graduates rarely pass the bar exam, let alone get good jobs. And when they learn that their school is one of a chain owned by a shady New York hedge-fund operator who also happens to own a bank specializing in student loans, the three know they have been caught up in The Great Law School Scam.
But maybe there’s a way out. Maybe there’s a way to escape their crushing debt, expose the bank and the scam, and make a few bucks in the process. But to do so, they would first have to quit school. And leaving law school a few short months before graduation would be completely crazy, right? Well, yes and no . . .
Pull up a stool, grab a cold one, and get ready to spend some time at The Rooster Bar.
“Satisfying . . . Grisham [is] at his best when he brings his sardonic sense of humor to the sometimes questionable ethics of law and banking.”—USA Today
“[A] smartly told tale . . . gratifying and all-too-real.”—The Washington Post

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Entertaining legal suspense I'll preface this by saying that The Rooster Bar was my first foray into the Grisham world, and I was not disappointed! This book was a riot from start to finish. Yeah, it's not super realistic- but it is an entertaining story with unique protagonists who have you constantly question whether you are actually rooting for them or not. You have to suspend your disbelief to enjoy this novel (think, "the 100 year old man" kind of disbelief), but if you can do that, you'll love this story. It had me laughing out loud, and I couldn't put down!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Beyond realistic and not enjoyable I borrowed this book from the library as I thought the jacket sounding interesting and did not want to wait for the paperback to come out in order to buy it for my collection of books from this author. .The plot line is highly unrealistic. The story line is slow and could have been told in fewer pages. I am glad I did not waste my money buying this book. I am finding that John Grisham's newer books are not as good as his older works.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A ridiculous story While "The Rooster Bar" is a well-written tale, the premise is ridiculous. Three students at a lowly regarded for profit law school decide to leave school in their last semester because of poor job prospects and a poor chance of passing the bar exam. They embark on a plan to pretend to be lawyers, picking up clients who are poor and need help. When their plan goes awry they skip town. To say more would ruin the story for those who choose to read this book, which I assume has sold a lot of copies due to the author's name.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great!! Nice combo of the pains of paying for school, feeling ripped of by that school and throwing in a good thriller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another really good read What can I say? John Grisham has pumped out another really good novel. The novel follows three young law students, who drop out of a dingy law school and go out in to the big legal world. Filled with scamming people they bite off more than they could chew. They find themselves hiding, and trying to cover up their tracks from the mess that they made. This novel was a real page turner and I found that I was in the story, and going through every emotion with them. I would love to see if there is a second part to this novel, to see where they have ended up several years down the road. I will be reading this book again, that's for sure

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK..ish The Rooster Bar is a page turner, as it is expected from an experienced name like John Grisham. The story can be considered as light, both as context and as depth. The character development is OK, nothing mind-blowing, nothing eye tearing. The pace is right, it makes you wonder, but it also lacks a particular attraction to keep it as a mystery. Although you expect something to happen, that promise never delivers in full. In the end, it ends up being a nice book to read at a beach. Don’t expect a masterpiece crime thriller. I bought it as half price, and I still have my doubts about the price I paid. You can find better stuff out there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Liking it I'm enjoying reading it, but I have to admit it hasn't pulled me in quite so quickly as other Grisham books have. Still, a good story and looking forward to finishing it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad For being my first John Grisham novel, I was impressed. His writing style is very easy to read. I felt as though the plot was a little far fetched, with Mark, Todd and Zola digging themselves a deeper hole in each chapter. Grisham made the law-heavy theme more enticing and easier to understand. I was totally sucked in by the antics of the would-be lawyers/heavily in-debt students.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ripped from the headlines.... A legal thriller that only John Grisham could write. I enjoyed the dialogue, characters and humour but it's not one of his best novels. Grishams delves into his views against diploma mills, backbreaking student loans, and the excesses of ICE. I give it a very light recommend. #plumreviews.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Another book that Grisham farmed out I don't believe Grisham wrote any part of this book . If he did he sure has lost his touch. It has to be the most boring story ever: only the last two chapters have anything going on and he polishes them off abruptly showing that he is just as bored writing it as I was reading it. It is the last Grisham novel for me. There are too many good writers out there to bother with him(or his agents) any more.
