about

The New York Times bestselling collection of humorous autobiographical essays by the Academy Award–nominated actress and star of Up in the Air and Pitch Perfect.

Even before she made a name for herself on the silver screen starring in films like Pitch Perfect, Up in the Air, Twilight, and Into the Woods, Anna Kendrick was unusually small, weird, and “10 percent defiant.”

At the ripe age of thirteen, she had already resolved to “keep the crazy inside my head where it belonged. Forever. But here’s the thing about crazy: It. Wants. Out.” In Scrappy Little Nobody, she invites readers inside her brain, sharing extraordinary and charmingly ordinary stories with candor and winningly wry observations.

With her razor-sharp wit, Anna recounts the absurdities she’s experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture as only she can—from her unusual path to the performing arts (Vanilla Ice and baggy neon pants may have played a role) to her double life as a middle-school student who also starred on Broadway to her initial “dating experiments” (including only liking boys who didn’t like her back) to reviewing a binder full of butt doubles to her struggle to live like an adult woman instead of a perpetual “man-child.”

Enter Anna’s world and follow her rise from “scrappy little nobody” to somebody who dazzles on the stage, the screen, and now the page—with an electric, singular voice, at once familiar and surprising, sharp and sweet, funny and serious (well, not that serious).
Anna Kendrick was born and raised in Portland, Maine. She made her Broadway debut at the age of twelve in her Tony-nominated performance for the musical High Society. Anna garnered an Academy Award nomination for her role as Natalie Keener in Up in the Air. She has made numerous theatrical appearances, including starring roles in Into ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely hilarious I'm not normally an autobiography reader, however Anna's is absolutely delightful. Her stories were enjoyable and I was excited to finish the book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from She is so Scrappy! You never know how good these celebrity autobiographies will be. This one was a hit. I listened to it read by Anna - so it was like Anna was right in my ear! She had a great mix of a) Telling us a bit about her life b) self-depreciating humour c) rolling some overall good life lessons in with the stories. Obviously well edited so that it was never boring. Not sure if I would have loved it as much if I read it (reading - what a drag right? If I wanted to read I would see a foreign film with subtitles) because having her intonate (why isn't Chapters spellcheck recognizing that as a word? Does it think I mean I'm "Into Nate?" Come on spell check!!!) the content helped bring it to life. But, as it was, a great week listening to this book on my drive to work. One of the better autobiographies I have heard.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Relatable Okay not entirely relatable, with all the Hollywood and Broadway, but Anna really does come across as just a regular ol joe with millennial humor.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not What I Was Expecting For some reason, I was disappointed in this book. It was not exciting or anything out of the ordinary, but does give a realistic view of what many actors and actresses go through to get to where they are today. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Charming, self-deprecating, and fun. Anna Kendrick has a great writing style that's full of humor, self-deprecation, and charm. She seems to have written a very open, honest memoir that doesn't dance around her personal life the way many celebrity memoirs tend to. I enjoyed this window into her thoughts on her career and life and the entertainment business in general. I think anyone who enjoys her as an actress and enjoys hearing about the weirdness of show-business will find something to like here.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from "The crazy wants out!" Anna Kendrick is hilarious.. Her novel shows how weird she is, which makes it totally relatable. Nothing is more real and honest than "The crazy wants out". I laughed out loud to the audio book about every 5 minutes or so. A fantastic read that demonstrates just how not glamorous being famous really is. I would recommend this to anyone with a sense of humour.

Editorial Reviews

"The craziest thing of all is that [Kendrick] manages to seem likable and down-to-earth across 275 pages(!). . . . In an era of manufactured authenticity, it's honestly impressive." —Chicago Tribune
