about

Some secrets are best kept hidden.

Anastasia Phoenix has always been the odd girl out, whether moving from city to international city with her scientist parents or being the black belt who speaks four languages.

And most definitely as the orphan whose sister is missing, presumed dead.

She's the only one who believes Keira is still alive, and when new evidence surfaces, Anastasia sets out to follow the trail-and lands in the middle of a massive conspiracy. Now she isn't sure who she can trust. At her side is Marcus, the bad boy with a sexy accent who's as secretive as she is. He may have followed her to Rome to help, but something about him seems too good to be true.

Nothing is as it appears, and when everything she's ever known is revealed to be a lie, Anastasia has to believe in one impossibility.

She will find her sister.

Diana Rodriguez Wallach is the author of three award-winning young adult novels: Amor and Summer Secrets, Amigas and School Scandals, and Adios to All The Drama, as well as Mirror, Mirror, a YA short-story collection based on the Narcissus myth. Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Missing Something First off, I just want to say a big thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for this. I requested the second in the series, not realizing, and they granted me the first as well. Much gratitude for that. I didn't enjoy this as much as I would have hoped. It started out well, and ended well, but the middle bit lost me. As a spy-thriller novel. my issue wasn't so much that the mystery was convoluted or confusing. In all honesty, it wasn't at all. It just came across as somewhat farfetched, and in turn, unmemorable. The characters didn't come across as too savvy, especially when it's revealed that all the information they received was pretty much hand fed to them on purpose. That doesn't strike me as particularly intriguing. I had difficulty remembering which character was which in the grand scheme of things. It really is a story where you need to sit back afterwards and think about it. I'm a reader who loves details to build a picture in my head, and I found the imagery to be quite lacking. They travel to Italy, hitting up two major cities, and you can barely tell. I forgot at one point that were in Rome, because the descriptions used to describe the beautiful city are disappointing and barely there. Venice was done much better, but I still found much room for improvement. I was only able to properly picture it because I've been there myself. . Finally, the main character Anastasia really irked me at times. I understand she's working through grief and trying to come to grips with the fact that her sister is gone, but man that got old fast. Furthermore, her thought process throughout the main sleuthing part in Italy was really quite naïve and selfish. It wasn't my favourite of character minds to be in. Overall, the book sets up for an interesting series. I'll definitely check out the second, but with much lower expectations.

I would highly recommend reading this book. It was filled with lots of suspense and twists and turns. It kept me wanting to read more. I thought it was well written. I did not realize it was the first book of a series, but now I can’t wait to read the second book, Lies that Bind.
