Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent, excellent, excellent! This book on Tom Thomson is unlike other books that you have read. I own many books on Tom but learned a lot of new things in Larsen's book. The writer told of many stories of Tom's boyhood, things that I have never read before. In doing so, it was not only interesting but one could see Tom's personality forming.Larsen spoke a lot on the friendship of the other artists (now the Group of Seven), I have never read this before and always wondered why the painters weren't close as they were all in this together, painting Canada in it's rugged beauty.Larsen writes that they were very close and often painted together. This makes more sense to me. I was still reading at 3am and had to get up at 6am and I couldn't put the book down. There is a page in the book that describes Tom and his father when they started a book that they liked they would read all night until the book ended.I know the feeling.Another story about Tom the artist, during a rain, thunder and lightning storm Tom was outside in it all as he had to get the right feeling to paint the sky, water and trees. Now there's a true artist. This book goes with my two other favourite Tom Thomson books. Judge Little's, The Tom Thomson mystery and Roy MacGregor's Northern Light. Glad that I own them all to be able to re-read at any time. A must for lovers of the Group and Tom. I like the way Wayne Larsen writes, His chosen words just flow into the story, no mile long words or tricky phrasing.
