It is evident that if my reader is an unmarried man, and he ever marry one of his own age, that one must be living somewhere now; she may be a perfect stranger to you at present, but she is somewhere. It is also true, I doubt not, that there is someone in the world well suited to mate with you, one with whom you could pass through life sharing its joys and sorrows, one who could respect and love you, and one whom you could respect and love. The qualities which would develop such principles might not be clearly seen at a first knowledge, and another, more demonstrative but less real and less suitable, might win the first feelings of affection, and thus on very superficial grounds a contract might be entered into which would bind you as long as life shall last. Oh! how necessary, therefore, to let reason govern feeling, so that all the possibilities may be weighed with the utmost prudence. If a capitalist is purchasing an estate of, say £10,000 value, how carefully every circumstance as to value and title would be considered by him and his lawyers, before signing the contract; but oh! what is £10,000 or any sum in comparison with the human heart? The one human charm in life that should comfort a husband amidst its vexations and disappointments is that he can turn to his helpmeet and find the full consolation which a heart of real love can effectually offer, to soothe the moral pain which burns; and if those hearts be united in spiritual as in human love, oh! what a power does such a marriage portion bestow.
