Yet God's long forbearance is mis-construed by many into ignorance or indifference, and they take advantage from it to sin with greater eagerness. As a general rule, it must be admitted, the execution of God's judgments are slow and long delayed. See how He dealt towards the Jewish nation, and towards ancient Greece and Rome; and see how He deals towards nations and individuals in our own day! This delay does not arise from any disposition on the part of God to connive at sin--neither does it originate in the requirement of time to procure evidence and prepare for judgment--nor is it occasioned by the lack of resources requisite for the execution of deserved displeasure. Its cause is to be found in His mercy alone. He is slow to anger; His compassions fail not; His mercy endureth for ever. The mis-construction of this delay on the part of God, appears under various forms. Sometimes wicked men say God does not see--at other times they think Him imperfect as themselves--and then at other times they conclude that He is too weak to execute His designs. In most cases there is little process of reasoning of any kind; but a general carelessness, interrupted only by some sudden and fearful judgment. The result of all is that Divine love is abused--guilt is fearfully aggravated--and the sinner adds to the misery of his future doom, ltcadcr! be careful that you presume not on account of God's compassion. Turn not your blessing into a curse. "Be diligent that ye may be found of Sim in peace, withut spot and blameless, and account that tlte long-suffering of our Lord is salvation."
