Ruthie Smithens, a girl who believes in fairy tales and happy endings, would do almost anything to help her best friend, Kit Kittredge, whose family has been hard hit by the Depression. But Ruthie has learned the hard way that offers of help, even between friends, are tricky. When Ruthie finds out some bad news about the Kittredges' house while at her father's bank, she has to find a way to help the Kittredges reach Kit's Aunt Millie, so that there can be at least the chance of a happy ending!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Helped My Special Needs Daughter! My Daughter is 11 years old and has a Learning Disability. She was a very late reader and is far behind for her age due to this. Juliana was given this book as a gift and I could not believe it when she finished the entire book in one day!! She was so interested in the Story Line... she could not put it down. Since then we have purchased several more American Girls Books and have had the same results. Not only have the American Girls Books helped my daughter to become a better reader but these books have sparked a huge interest in her for History! American History is now her Favorite Subject and she is eager to learn! Thanks A Million American Girls!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Story! We read this book together and very much enjoyed the story. I was impressed with the story, the educational value and historical accuracy of the story and the "LookingBack" portion of the book. Ruthie is a very sweet girl and my daughter was able to relate to her-the happy outlook, dreams of fairy tales and happy endings but also her very brave and determined outlook and willingness to help others. Very important lessons. I appreciate that my daughter and I will read AG Historical books and she will absorb the history aspect and will also apply the lessons learned from the books to her own life.

Ruthie decides to pay the Kittredge's Aunt Millie (whose has money to save the house). Rated 5 out of 5 by from Meet Ruthie! I wish there more books about Ruthie: it's hard to really like her parents though, they give Kit's family so much grief. But, through Aunt Millie and older brother Charlie, Ruthie finds a way to save Kit's home and her pride. A wonderful read.
