about

An aristocratic Englishwoman and plantation owner who is married to a fanatical Confederate officer during the American Civil War but is bitterly opposed to the war is persuaded to join in a plot to help the Confederacy win the conflict.
But she suspects that the plot is not what it seems to be, and her overseer on the plantation, a young negro freed former slave, also has his doubts about it.
Although no-one asks for his opinion, because of his status as a negro.
The plot has supposedly been devised by the Confederate high command because she is shown a ‘Letter Of Authority’ which it is claimed has been signed by General Robert E. Lee, the Confederate commander in chief.
It is delivered to the plantation by a mysterious visitor who claims to be a Confederate officer.
Yet he has a slight British accent.
Is he really what he claims to be or is he a British spy?
At first she refuses to join in the plot because of her suspicions but he unleashes a series of terrifying events in an attempt to persuade her.
