Rebent Sinner

about

•This is the eleventh title we’ve published by Ivan, whose books have sold over 80,000 copies collectively. Their last book, Tomboy Survival Guide (2016), was a considered something of a breakthrough; they were shortlisted for Canada’s richest non-fiction prize (the $60,000 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust of Canada Non-Fiction Prize), it was longlisted for CBC’s popular show Canada Reads, and was named an ALA Stonewall Honor Book.
•They are well known as a seasoned storyteller and performer; Ivan makes a living giving talks across Canada and the US, including in elementary and high schools. They have also given a TED talk, which has received 1.6 million views online (link: https://www.ted.com/talks/ivan_coyote_why_we_need_gender_neutral_bathrooms).
•Ivan’s latest book Rebent Sinner is largely inspired by today’s culture wars, especially the war declared on trans people by the Trump administration and state legislators. As a former “butch lesbian” now in their late 40s who has embraced their trans identity, Ivan is a role model for young trans folk and a source of inspiration for LGBTQ+ folk and their allies of all ages. Their writing is approachable and personal, which is why it resonates with so many readers.
•In recent years Ivan hasn’t made a lot of appearances in the US outside of school and college gigs, but we are committed to Ivan doing a tour in support of this book.
•The core audience is LGTBQ people, including young adults. Ivan’s work also appeals to straight audiences, especially women over the age of 60.
