about

Ever since Jacob Reckless was a child, he has been escaping to a hidden world through a portal in his father's abandoned study. Over the years, he has made a name for himself as a finder of enchanted items and buried secrets. He's also made many enemies and allies--most important, Fox, a beautiful shape-shifting vixen whom Jacob cares for more than he lets on.
But life in this other world is about to change. Tragedy strikes when Jacob's younger brother, Will, follows him through the portal. Brutally attacked, Will is infected with a curse that is quickly transforming him into a Goyl--a ruthless killing machine, with skin made of stone.
Jacob is prepared to fight to save his brother, but in a land built on trickery and lies, Jacob will need all the wit, courage, and reckless spirit he can summon to reverse the dark spell--before it's too late.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from For Jacob Reckless, Every Second Counts For Jacob Reckless, Every Second Counts “The night breathed through the apartment like a dark animal. The ticking of a clock. The groan of a floorboard as he slipped out of his room. All was drowned by its silence. But Jacob loved the night. He felt it on his skin like a promise. Like a cloak woven from freedom and danger.” Quote from Reckless by Cornelia Funke I had originally heard of Reckless when it was first published earlier last year. I was immediately unattracted to the novel, the cover was fairly unappealing and the premise didn't seem to stick to me or ignite much interest. I had heard both negative and positive things about the novel and unfairly made the preconception that perhaps Reckless was not for me. However, my mind was quickly changed when the paperback edition of the novel was released, now featuring a brand new cover and a new equally appealing premise. The new premise gave me a better insight on what the novel was about and I instantly found myself wanting to read it immediately. Interesting World Building Regrettably Reckless started off quite slow and unsteady, leaving me very confused about it's premise. For several chapters I found myself guessing about what was going on, wondering about the world Jacob was traveling to and how, exactly, other characters became involved. Fortunately, a few chapters in things seemed to settle together quite nicely and make more sense. As I dove in further, I found myself becoming entranced with Cornelia Funke's interestingly unique world building. It was filled with creatures beyond my imagination and adventures I never even dreamed of, it was very refreshing! The Mirror Will Only Open For He Who Cannot See Himself Character-wise, Cornelia presented a thick grouping of interesting and peculiar personalities that I found myself greatly enjoying. From Fox to Clara, even to the brothers Will and Jacob - I adored them all. However, I did find myself adoring Will far more than the others, connecting with him on different levels that I could not with the others. Aside from the attention grabbing characters, I found the premise to be wonderfully addicting, the story and chain of events very unyielding in suspense and action. It was unfortunate, however, that at times they did come across as quite disorganized but I was happy to find that they came together quite nicely in the end. With a wonderfully addicting new world, Cornelia Funke has created a novel that I can only agree with other reviewers to be magical and adventurous. It was rather unfortunate, however, that the pace wasn't as swift as I had hoped and that confusion clouded a thick portion of the novel.
