Deadly forces are about to be awakened … In the degenerate, unliked backwater of Dunwich, Wilbur Whately, a most unusual child, is born. Of unnatural parentage, he grows at an uncanny pace to an unsettling height, but the boy’s arrival simply precedes that of a true horror: one of the Old Ones, that forces the people of the town to hole up by night, fearful for their lives, by day able only to trace the wreckage wrought by the gigantic, unseen monster. In this and other tales of the macabre, H. P. Lovecraft weaves unearthly fantasies of creatures beyond conception – existing between the spaces of the dimensions we know.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not essential, for Red Classics Horror Completists only Before buying this collection, I had read that it had a vastly different table of contents with all my favorites by HPL included, and was therefore ideal both as a light weight "travel-sized" HPL collection and also to complete my penguin red classics collection. However, the TOC is a very limited 6 story assortment, 3, the title story, "The Outsider" (which is a really short one anyway) and "The Thing on the Doorstep" being what I consider to be essential HPL. Additionally, there is "Hypnos" and "The Lurking Fear" which are ok stories but not Lovecraft's best by any stretch. Finally, there is one that I am frankly on the fence about: "Dreams in the Witch House", good but not great. So all in all a disappointment. Pay the extra $13 and get the Library of America hardcover and you won't need another copy of Lovecraft ever again (unless you want to read EVERYTHING) or an extra $26 and get the three Penguin Classics paperbacks with the great intros and commentary by S.T. Joshi. Don't waste your time with this unless you want the HPL volume to complete your red classics set.
