The #1 New York Times bestselling series!

Red Queen, by #1 New York Times bestselling author Victoria Aveyard, is a sweeping tale of power, intrigue, and betrayal, perfect for fans of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones series.

Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood—those with common, Red blood serve the Silver-blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.

To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard—a growing Red rebellion—even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction.

One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays, the only certainty is betrayal.

And don’t miss War Storm, the thrilling final book in the bestselling Red Queen series!

Victoria Aveyard was born and raised in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, a small town known only for the worst traffic rotary in the continental United States. She moved to Los Angeles to earn a BFA in screenwriting at the University of Southern California. She currently splits her time between the East and West coasts. As an author and...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE LOVE LOVE Red queen is such an amazing book. it has a mix of divergent, a dash of the hunger games, and a pinch of twilight

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It! Red Queen was very fresh and original. I enjoyed the characters and fell in love with the relationships. I was EXTREMELY blind sided by some of the back stabbing near the end.The novel definitely kept me wanting to read more. Game of Thrones fans would probably enjoy this read quite a bit also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE THIS! As an adult, I have a secret love for Teen Novels - this series is up there with Twilight, Divergent and the Hunger Games! An interesting distopian society and keeps you captivated page after page!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My All Time Favourite Book As an active book reader, giving the spot of your all time favourite series is a big deal! But this book (series) just BLEW ME AWAY! I honestly don’t see where the hate for this book comes from, because I just loved every aspect of this book. I love the characters (especially the character development through the series), I love the world it was set in, I love the plot lines, just everything! It also has one of the greatest plot twists I have ever read, and has one of the most interesting characters I have ever read about. This book is a 5/5 stars for me, and I would highly recommend you check it out!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 60/50 This book was actually quite easy and fast to read, barely took me any time to devour all the pages. The story in itself is not super original as many different books have similar, but the world created around the story is pretty great. I like how the biggest difference between ruling race and normal people, aside from having magical abilities is the color of their blood. The Main character is also quite likable thought she seems a bit to trusty and not enough at the same time its hard for me to explain. Either you like her or you don’t! The book is fast paced at some moments but then slow at others and that’s a bit annoying but doesn’t affect much of the reading. Thought it would be nice if there was more into this book, like more background story, more explanation to certain things and more development to the characters. I think those things happen in the rest of the series but I am not sure just yet. All in all easy and quick read where you either like the characters or don’t at all, and some depth is missing a bit. ~Himya ( The Collector’s Edition is freaking gorgeous!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a twist I knew coming into this it was dealing with royalty, secrecy and hierarchies but I did not image this novel to be so fun to read. The characters are all written in a realistic manner, the plot moves quickly, and you never want to put it down. The twists and turns this book takes infuriated me, made me cry, made me laugh. A great novel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from An Okay Read But Wanted More I was really excited about this novel (and series in general). There has been a lot of hype surrounding this series and it has quite the popularity and following. Well, after reading this initial book, I can say it was a good read. I liked it but there was some issues that I had with it. What is most disappointing is that this story and this plot had such potential but I don't think it was done as well as it could have been. The beginning of the novel started out strongly but then as the story developed, I found there were a lot of holes. One that I especially found difficult was the world wasn't explained as well as it could have been both in its current state or how it became that system. I found that I became confused at moments because of the holes that existed and then would lose focus or interest. The last quarter of the novel did pick up and was eventful. It definitely had me caught of guard and that original interest that developed in the first couple of chapters returned. The ending did ignite an interest in continuing the series and I'm really hoping I will enjoy the next book more.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good quick read, not a literary masterpiece. Good quick read, not a literary masterpiece. I’d just finished a pretty dense and heavy book and wanted something I could crush in a few days, and this absolutely fit the bill. It was super fast-paced, had some intrigue, didn’t require all that much thought, sexy at times. If you’re looking for a beach book you can cruise through and you liked Hunger Games, there’s a good chance you’ll like this book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great series! Not only are the books absolutely beautiful, the plot was fantastic. There was a slight plot twist that was unexpected, but intriguing. Great author, you can really tell she puts work and passion into writing her novels. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favourite books!! I read this book in high school and loved it!! It's honestly one of my favourites. Now, the final book of the series is out so I'm rereading Red Queen and it's as great as I remember. It is the perfect mix of everything I love in a book: magical powers, great twists, budding romances, and so much more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from <3! Okay! This book was so amazing! It gave beautiful descriptions that let me imagine the word perfectly. I loved reading from Mare's perspective because she's new to the royal stuff and it was honestly so entertaining to read! This book gave me so many emotions! Betrayal, heartbreak, but also made me feel happy. It always gave me a surprise because I never knew what was going to happen next!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A decent read If you're looking to fill your imagination with fresh, new ideas, I recommend this book. The writing wasn't amazing, but it was written in a way that you can see everything happening in your mind's eye. It was like I was already watching the film based off of it. Anyone into science fiction and fantasy would enjoy the concepts of Mare Barrow's world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I NEED MORE UM WHAT. AMAZING. I am now easily a huge Victoria Aveyard advocate. This book is all the elements I love in a story rolled into one. Forbidden romances. A completely new invented world with rules of it's own. Fantasy elements. Supernatural powers. Kings and Queens. Twisted plot elements. It has the same pace and female-driven feel at The Hunger Games while still being all it's own. (Dare I say it's even BETTER than THG? Yes, yes I do.) Some parts even remind me of a more intensified version of the Princess Diaries, but WAY more exciting. I'm so grateful I stumbled across the book for my grade 11 book review back in 2016. I will re-read this until my fingers rub holes in the pages.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So good! Was hesitant to read this book and I’m glad I did, I love the characters and all the twists!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it... expect for the romance This dystopian novel was perfect in so many ways, but the romance is what took the fifth star away from me and the twist I saw coming from a mile away. I love the idea of a suppressed Red having the abilities of a Silver. There were so many layers to this book. My favorite part was reading Mare (the main character) learn how to control her ability and how to harness it. I can't wait to see where the story goes in the series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Liked it, but there's something missing I have had this books sitting on my shelf for years. With the series coming to a head, I figured I might as well finally dive into it. I liked it, and I have no idea what it is, but something is holding me back from loving it. The plot is interesting, like many have already said, it really does read like the love child of the Hunger Games and Red Rising. Both series which I love. Maybe it is the main character of Mare, I'm not sure. Maybe it's the fact that I guessed the main twists? Who knows. But something is stopping me from really loving it. This is kind of reminding me of when I was reading the Grisha Trilogy. Which I loved at times and wanted to put the book down and walk away in others (I can thank Mal and Alina for that). That being said, I really did enjoy it, and I am excited to start Glass Sword. Interested to see were Aveyard is going to take the series, and learn more about the side characters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Different; Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover I'm not sure why but I put off reading this one for a long time. I thought the covers seemed too "stereotypical YA novel". I actually really enjoyed the premise, it was a different story then even the description sold me. I'm excited to read the rest of the series!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unexpected At first, I really was drawn to the covers; it was really aesthetically pleasing and I'm pleased to say I quite enjoyed the book, as well. At first the plot appears to follow the usual YA trend, but by the end of the book, there were so many unexpected things that occurred. Personally, I didn't think it was a light read at all. It was pretty intense, which I loved.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE I love this book so much. This probably isn't quite accurate but it makes me think of The Hunger Games mixed with Divergent. If you like those books (or movies) I think you will really like this series!! I borrowed the audio books from the library and then went to Indigo and bought them. I can't wait to read them again! Highly recommend! And who cares if its a series for teens. I am far from a teenager and I still enjoyed them! I have already gotten a couple of friends hooked!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally Read Red Queen! I've seen some of the same ideas in other books (The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Wind Singer), and Red Queen didn't immediately grip me as much as these others, but I enjoyed this book and am now reading the second one. It came well recommended by several of my friends. I personally enjoyed the twist because even though it was heavily hinted at, I didn't want to believe it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Anyone Can Betray Anyone So after seeing this book everywhere (seriously, EVERYWHERE) I figured I would give it a try. I hesitated because I heard it was full of tropes. Admittedly, there are some, but they don't hinder the story at all. In fact, they helped create a truly epic story filled with action and betrayal, and made me wonder why I didn't start these books ages ago. RED QUEEN is set in an interesting and brutal world where Mare Barrow is thrust into a cruel kingdom thanks to her uncanny and extremely powerful ability. From there, she struggles to find her way through webs of lies and betrayals, including the ones she weaves herself. I know it was mentioned a lot, but wow, these treacheries are something else. Just when you endure one, author Victoria Aveyard has another, more ruthless one lined up right behind it. That made for an even more intense reading experience and had me scrambling to find out what happened next. Mare is a very strong character and more than capable of saving herself. She won't shy away from hardships or the consequences of her actions, and is trying to do the right thing in a desperate situation. Cal is going to be an interesting character to watch grow and change, since Mare has turned his entire world upside down. Maven is also highly complex and I really want to see what happens to him. While there is a bit of a love triangle, what I liked about this romance was that a) the romance didn't seem forced, and b) the triangle actually made sense. Mare was developing complex emotions for both parties, but not in a dramatic teeny way. She acted like a person, which made me want to root for her all the more. Aveyard's writing is beautiful and since I came in not really knowing what to expect, I was elated to find my expectations well exceeded. I've got the sequel in my hands right now and can't wait to learn what happens next!
Date published: 2018-05-11
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very refreshing Amongst the piles of worn out tropes and stereotypes rises this novel. Mare Barrow is a very gripping and realistic protagonist, with selfish and survivalist tendencies like the best of us. If you think that this is your run of the mill dystopian fic then I recommend you give this book a chance and read all the way to the end -- it'll surely surprise you!
Date published: 2018-05-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rise, Red as the Dawn I read this book for the first time last year and it blew my mind. I suggest that you read this book too and don't mind the negative reviews.
Date published: 2018-05-05
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow start, amazing finish The first half of the book was a little bit of a hassle to get through. It starts off great as we learn more about our characters, the world that they live in and the events that gets Mare to the castle and exposes her "powers". Once she's in the castle it's a little boring to be honest. Until the plot develops further it starts to get more intriguing and exciting. The plot lines are great, the conflict keeps you hooked and the ending leaves you shook. I personally could do without the love triangle that accompanies every YA series, but in this story it actually adds to the plot instead of just being thrown in there for the sake of it. Overall I enjoyed it even though some parts of the book were kind of lost on me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Addicting! Another incredibly addicting YA series that is exciting to read and keeps you focused from start to finish! A great and realistically flawed protagonist adds a dimension of intrigue to the plot as well! High recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved This All I have to say: Yes, yes, yes! This one has been burning a hole in my shelf for far too long and I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it. I loved so much about this, and the hype around it is believable. Mare was a great character to follow. It was really easy to slide into her shoes and live the story with her. If I have one complaint about Mare, it's that sometimes her internal thoughts are a bit overdone, but it didn't take away from enjoying this. The electric element is probably my favourite. It's different, and Aveyard uses it well throughout. In fact, all the silver-blood powers are fascinating, the depth with which Aveyard went with each. The romance line that builds in this has left me so conflicted, which never happens. I look forward to reading more just to see how that plays out. The story itself is quite exciting. It got quite twisty towards the end. Disclaimer: I accidentally read the back of the second book while reading the first and HOLY SPOILER ALERT! I couldn't for the life of me figure out how it would get to that point, but Aveyard brought it home brilliantly. I love the world she's created as well. I got major Bioshock Infinite vibes, with the red coloured rebellion and steampunk aura. Aveyard is a fantastic writer. I LOVE her style. The way she describes places and events and emotion is so spot-on for me. In fact, I've even made notes for my own WIP on how to approach certain topics based on her writing. It's given me a lot of clarity, something that has made me love it that much more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nope After reading the description of this book and a former friend of mine saying it is great, I was pumped to read it and add it to my favorites list. BUT, it's all too familiar. Its as if Hunger Games met Divergent and had a baby named Percy Jackson. Now those are three of my favorite series and seeing them being portrayed in a somewhat different way was not pleasing. I got through maybe 100 pages and couldn't read anymore. I don't recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection! This novel was amazing, I originally started reading it for a book report and fell inlove with the novel, I'm currently reading King's Cage and can say that the action never stops! The writing in the books I bought had some minor errors that Aveyard's editor must have missed but the plot and story line was pure genius! I love my books but this is definitely one of my favourites by far!

Date published: 2018-03-20
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favorite YA books! I know people say that a lot of the elements in Red Queen have been done before (like the girl from a poor background who finds out she has super special snowflake powers etc). So yes, I'll admit that's true. The story itself is kind of like a blend of a bunch of other YA books... BUT it's a blend of all of the best parts of the other stories! It was exactly what I wanted to read. The plot's like some perfect little recipe without any excess filler to weigh it down. There were castles, princes, politics & schemes, special powers that are kind of like magic, an original world, etc. I think Victoria Aveyard's writing style was what really stood out for me, too. The whole book read like a screenplay and you could totally see the whole movie unfolding! Plus, the pacing was perfect, everything flowed really smoothly, and the whole story just seemed super polished. Mare was an awesome main character who was believable, motivated out of love for her family & friends, realistically flawed, and had some depth. I loved all of the guys and the rest of the characters as well! So I don't care that this story isn't redefining the genre with some totally unique plot because it's just plain fun, entertaining, and so well done. It's the perfect blend of dystopian + fantasy and basically everything I wanted!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Skip it I read all the positive reviews and thought this would be a great read. I was wrong. I thought it was boring and didn't really like any of the characters. I had just finished the Leigh Bardugo series and liked it much better. Also be warned that this was supposed to be a trilogy and I guess she wants more money, she is making a fourth book. Read the reviews for the rest of the books before you start the series because it seems that it just goes downhill from here.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved the idea of this I really enjoyed the take on the red and silver blood in society. It's very parallel to how upper and middle classes are treated in normal society, obviously just less extreme. The idea of having powers that are geinal is wonderful. The story is good and just keeps on going.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating! Incredible! The book pulls you in and out of various emotions and states of mind all while Aveyard continues to wind her long and complex story. If you are looking for a good book to read, and are into dystopian novels with romance involved, this is a great place to start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great!!! Wow, I did not expect the story to be really captivating! I just bought this book on a whim because I ran out of new books to read. I saw a review about this book saying that it was a combination of X-Men and The Selection, so I got intrigued. I am not really familiar with X-Men aside from the fact that the characters have superpowers, but I enjoyed reading The Selection so I was looking forward to a story like that. I got hooked right at the beginning, and the story kept getting better as it progressed. The twist was really surprising (or maybe I was just naive), and I could not help but feel betrayed. For me, the character that I truly empathize with was Cal. Even before the twist was revealed, I was already on his side despite the fact that Mare viewed him as an enemy. I felt bad for Cal because he was stuck between his loyalty to his kin and what was perceived as right by the girl he loved. But I admired him sticking to his principles. I could not blame him for most of his decisions because he was just acting based on how he was brought up as a crowned prince of the Silvers. Overall, an awesome book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful #PlumReview This book is about a lower class citizen in a society designed to keep people in their respective positions who defies these laws. The young girl is a "Red" who is lower class than a "Silver." She becomes a servant to the silvers and one day is working at their arena where they have their annual tournament; somewhat like in ancient Rome. She falls into the tournament arena which has an electric forcefield covering the opening so that the Silvers who have special abilities cannot get out when fighting. Instead of dying instantly, she falls through the forcefield and survives and uses her electric special abilities to defeat the Silvers who are already in the arena. The silvers must come up with an excuse as to why a "Red" has special abilities; this leads to an adventure and her learning much more about the "Red/Silver" community than she ever knew before. She also befriends the eldest prince who develops feelings for her which is another uncommon occurrence within this society to date.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING! I purchased this book awhile ago, and never got the chance to read it until 3 days ago. The book is a combination of sci-fi and fantasy. If you enjoyed the selection or divergent series, this is the novel for you! A lot of teen romance is involved, and spoiler alert: huge plot twist at the end !! There's also a lot of violence and trauma involved, making the writing seem very overdramatic. However, still found the story very exciting and couldn't put the book down! This novel is the first book of a series, so the ending is a real cliff hanger!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good Victoria Aveyard is a very talented author illustrating classism in a fictional world. She creates each character in amazing detail, no character without a flaw. She also demonstrates the common theme of fake wars/fears to give citizens something to unite under monarchy (similar to other YA dystopian/fantasy books). Despite a Silver's or newblood's ability, they are still mortal and shows the unfortunate consequences of power-hungry (and maybe even negatively influenced) characters. Anyone can betray anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Start But Loved the beginning, it had the perfect hook and intrigue. THen... the rest of the novel didn't live up to it. It's a shame really, it had a lot of potential!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great first novel in an exiting series I read this book a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. It had a good plot line, however the story is quite similar to many popular teen novels out in the market right now... female heroine who is special and has to save the world from evil. That being said, it was still interesting an exiting. I don't think I would read it again, but I am glad I read once.
Date published: 2017-09-17
Rated 3 out of 5 by from nah This is a book I wish I could recommend more. I thought the beginning was strong and it had the makings of a really solid YA story. However, somewhere in the middle of the book I feel like Aveyard sort of overbalances. I won't give details for obvious reasons, but there's a point where an author tries so hard to put up hurdles for their characters that they take the sting out of the dilemma.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good first book I bought this on a recommendation from a friend and I loved this book. It always kept me on edge and I read it in a day it was so riveting. I was disappointed with the next books, and found myself wishing I didn't buy the books. It's a good dystopian series but did not live up to the greatness of the first book. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!!!!!!!!! I got it as a Christmas gift from my aunt and it is one of my favourite books ever. It's a dystopian novel (think The Hungar Games) but the world is divied between red and silver blood. There are so many plot twists and it's just so good. Get this book, I promise, you will love it!!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ordinary, But Enjoyable If You Like That Sort of Thing Red Queen is a fun, if bog-standard, young adult dystopian novel. The world is divided into Reds and Silvers. Silvers are silver-blooded and hereditarily superpowered; their powers ranging from the ability to control fire or metal, or burrow into someone's mind and control them, or any other number of powers. Reds have red blood and no powers. They're oppressed, kept poverty-stricken and used as cannon fodder in useless Silver wars. Our main character, Mare Barrow, is a Red on the cusp of adulthood, as is her best friend, Kilorn. Kilorn is nearly eighteen when the fisherman he is apprenticed to dies suddenly, leaving Kilorn no choice but to join the military. Thus starts our adventure with Mare, as she will do anything to keep her friend safe. A series of hijinks and situations later and Mare is working as a servant at the royal palace. She falls into the gladiatorial arena where noble girls are literally fighting it out to become the betrothed of crown prince Cal. However, instead of being electrocuted by the energy field protecting the arena, she survives and is discovered to have the power of electricity, sparking Mare's new nickname: the Lightning Girl. That her blood is red, not silver, is kept a desperate secret and she is affianced to younger prince, Maven, and trained in her new powers. Like the rest of the book, Mare is a pretty standard YA heroine caught between two brothers; of course, she is drawn to the brother she's not engaged to. Throw in a bit of rebellion and the narrative starts to take shape. It's not until a few twists are revealed at the end that the story really starts. Most of Red Queen feels like slow set-up to the remaining books in the series, trying to flesh out princes Cal and Maven, while always hinting at their potential downfall. Red Queen was ordinary in almost every way, but enjoyable enough that I will still pick up the second book.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed... I enjoyed the book, but I didnt really care for the characters or care much in general by the end of the book. I found the book kinda chiche so I dont have much motivation to continue on with the series, but I see why people would like it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great book! I thought I would hate this book but I ended up loving it. The story was kind of predictable and cliche at once because there's the royalties and the commoner. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read I understand that the story is not the most original, but I thought it was really well done! Mare is very much a relatable and real type of character. She's not perfect, which makes her unique from a lot of other teen novel characters. I absolutely loved this book, but the rest of the series goes downhill after this.
Date published: 2017-07-18
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good read, but... The story of the Reds and Silvers seemed too familiar to me. The way society is set up reminded me too much of The Hunger Games' the capital vs. districts 1-13. Although it does not feature the games, the rebellion is very similar to Mockingjay and that may have threw me off a little bit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A fun read, but been done before The writing was quite simple, the story fairly definitely get the feeling you have read this book before. In the beginning I found the heroine to be admirable but any likable qualities she had, slowly begin to unravel and by the end of the book I found myself to be annoyed and almost disgusted by her. That being said, it is a fast paced and entertaining read - if you're looking for some light fluff to kill some time.
