The #1 New York Times bestselling series!

Red Queen, by #1 New York Times bestselling author Victoria Aveyard, is a sweeping tale of power, intrigue, and betrayal, perfect for fans of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones series.

Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood—those with common, Red blood serve the Silver-blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.

To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard—a growing Red rebellion—even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction.

One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays, the only certainty is betrayal.

And don’t miss War Storm, the thrilling final book in the bestselling Red Queen series!

Victoria Aveyard was born and raised in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, a small town known only for the worst traffic rotary in the continental United States. Rated 5 out of 5 by from love This was a story I was kinda on the fence about before, now that I've read it I am hooked on the whole series. The characters and plot are great. It's a must read

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved This All I have to say: Yes, yes, yes! This one has been burning a hole in my shelf for far too long and I'm so glad I finally got around to reading it. I loved so much about this, and the hype around it is believable. Mare was a great character to follow. It was really easy to slide into her shoes and live the story with her. If I have one complaint about Mare, it's that sometimes her internal thoughts are a bit overdone, but it didn't take away from enjoying this. The electric element is probably my favourite. It's different, and Aveyard uses it well throughout. In fact, all the silver-blood powers are fascinating, the depth with which Aveyard went with each. The romance line that builds in this has left me so conflicted, which never happens. I look forward to reading more just to see how that plays out. The story itself is quite exciting. It got quite twisty towards the end. Disclaimer: I accidentally read the back of the second book while reading the first and HOLY SPOILER ALERT! I couldn't for the life of me figure out how it would get to that point, but Aveyard brought it home brilliantly. I love the world she's created as well. I got major Bioshock Infinite vibes, with the red coloured rebellion and steampunk aura. Aveyard is a fantastic writer. I LOVE her style. The way she describes places and events and emotion is so spot-on for me. In fact, I've even made notes for my own WIP on how to approach certain topics based on her writing. It's given me a lot of clarity, something that has made me love it that much more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nope After reading the description of this book and a former friend of mine saying it is great, I was pumped to read it and add it to my favorites list. BUT, it's all too familiar. Its as if Hunger Games met Divergent and had a baby named Percy Jackson. Now those are three of my favorite series and seeing them being portrayed in a somewhat different way was not pleasing. I got through maybe 100 pages and couldn't read anymore. I don't recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection! This novel was amazing, I originally started reading it for a book report and fell inlove with the novel, I'm currently reading King's Cage and can say that the action never stops! The writing in the books I bought had some minor errors that Aveyard's editor must have missed but the plot and story line was pure genius! I love my books but this is definitely one of my favourites by far!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from on of the best books I've read in a long time. I got this book 3 weeks ago and couldn't put it down. I was up until 3:30 am when I had to get up at 7 am for work but I just had to finish it and find out what happened. I also just finished the 3rd book in the series "King's Cage" and I already pre-ordered the 4th. This series is one of my favourites.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favorite YA books! I know people say that a lot of the elements in Red Queen have been done before (like the girl from a poor background who finds out she has super special snowflake powers etc). So yes, I'll admit that's true. The story itself is kind of like a blend of a bunch of other YA books... BUT it's a blend of all of the best parts of the other stories! It was exactly what I wanted to read. The plot's like some perfect little recipe without any excess filler to weigh it down. There were castles, princes, politics & schemes, special powers that are kind of like magic, an original world, etc. I think Victoria Aveyard's writing style was what really stood out for me, too. The whole book read like a screenplay and you could totally see the whole movie unfolding! Plus, the pacing was perfect, everything flowed really smoothly, and the whole story just seemed super polished. Mare was an awesome main character who was believable, motivated out of love for her family & friends, realistically flawed, and had some depth. I loved all of the guys and the rest of the characters as well! So I don't care that this story isn't redefining the genre with some totally unique plot because it's just plain fun, entertaining, and so well done. It's the perfect blend of dystopian + fantasy and basically everything I wanted!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved this book with all my heart!! My husband bought me this series for valentines day and I'm totally addicted! I could stop reading

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Skip it I read all the positive reviews and thought this would be a great read. I was wrong. I thought it was boring and didn't really like any of the characters. I had just finished the Leigh Bardugo series and liked it much better. Also be warned that this was supposed to be a trilogy and I guess she wants more money, she is making a fourth book. Read the reviews for the rest of the books before you start the series because it seems that it just goes downhill from here.

Date published: 2018-02-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved the idea of this I really enjoyed the take on the red and silver blood in society. It's very parallel to how upper and middle classes are treated in normal society, obviously just less extreme. The idea of having powers that are geinal is wonderful. The story is good and just keeps on going.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating! Incredible! The book pulls you in and out of various emotions and states of mind all while Aveyard continues to wind her long and complex story. If you are looking for a good book to read, and are into dystopian novels with romance involved, this is a great place to start.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great slow beginning but otherwise good
Date published: 2018-01-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great!!! Wow, I did not expect the story to be really captivating! I just bought this book on a whim because I ran out of new books to read. I saw a review about this book saying that it was a combination of X-Men and The Selection, so I got intrigued. I am not really familiar with X-Men aside from the fact that the characters have superpowers, but I enjoyed reading The Selection so I was looking forward to a story like that. I got hooked right at the beginning, and the story kept getting better as it progressed. The twist was really surprising (or maybe I was just naive), and I could not help but feel betrayed. For me, the character that I truly empathize with was Cal. Even before the twist was revealed, I was already on his side despite the fact that Mare viewed him as an enemy. I felt bad for Cal because he was stuck between his loyalty to his kin and what was perceived as right by the girl he loved. But I admired him sticking to his principles. I could not blame him for most of his decisions because he was just acting based on how he was brought up as a crowned prince of the Silvers. Overall, an awesome book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful #PlumReview This book is about a lower class citizen in a society designed to keep people in their respective positions who defies these laws. The young girl is a "Red" who is lower class than a "Silver." She becomes a servant to the silvers and one day is working at their arena where they have their annual tournament; somewhat like in ancient Rome. She falls into the tournament arena which has an electric forcefield covering the opening so that the Silvers who have special abilities cannot get out when fighting. Instead of dying instantly, she falls through the forcefield and survives and uses her electric special abilities to defeat the Silvers who are already in the arena. The silvers must come up with an excuse as to why a "Red" has special abilities; this leads to an adventure and her learning much more about the "Red/Silver" community than she ever knew before. She also befriends the eldest prince who develops feelings for her which is another uncommon occurrence within this society to date.
Date published: 2018-01-12
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Red Queen This series is very similar to The Hunger Games. You will enjoy this series if you liked The Hunger Games and don't mind reading similar series.
Date published: 2018-01-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING! I purchased this book awhile ago, and never got the chance to read it until 3 days ago. The book is a combination of sci-fi and fantasy. If you enjoyed the selection or divergent series, this is the novel for you! A lot of teen romance is involved, and spoiler alert: huge plot twist at the end !! There's also a lot of violence and trauma involved, making the writing seem very overdramatic. However, still found the story very exciting and couldn't put the book down! This novel is the first book of a series, so the ending is a real cliff hanger!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from meh Very predictable. It's like a mashup of all the YA distopian tropes...the second half was kinda better but not enough for me to keep on with the story.
Date published: 2017-12-29
Rated 2 out of 5 by from YA Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The characters may have different names, but trust, you have read this dystopian book many, many times, and this novel is no different. I wanted so much more. There just wasn't anything unique about this story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I really enjoyed this book. The characters, the plot, the powers--all great. The one thing I could do without was the main character + two royal siblings love triangle, but the book is good enough that it doesn't impact my opinion much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read This book is pretty good with great character development and story line, not my favorite book but better than a lot of others I have read. It is worth a read if you enjoy YA (I am an adult who enjoys this so I tend to read more YA than anything)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good Victoria Aveyard is a very talented author illustrating classism in a fictional world. She creates each character in amazing detail, no character without a flaw. She also demonstrates the common theme of fake wars/fears to give citizens something to unite under monarchy (similar to other YA dystopian/fantasy books). Despite a Silver's or newblood's ability, they are still mortal and shows the unfortunate consequences of power-hungry (and maybe even negatively influenced) characters. Anyone can betray anyone.
Date published: 2017-09-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Start But Loved the beginning, it had the perfect hook and intrigue. THen... the rest of the novel didn't live up to it. It's a shame really, it had a lot of potential!
Date published: 2017-09-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome read! The book was had just the right amount of cliché for my tastes and was one of the few books that was able to surprise me in the end.
Date published: 2017-09-18
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great first novel in an exiting series I read this book a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it. It had a good plot line, however the story is quite similar to many popular teen novels out in the market right now... female heroine who is special and has to save the world from evil. That being said, it was still interesting an exiting. I don't think I would read it again, but I am glad I read once.
Date published: 2017-09-17
Rated 3 out of 5 by from nah This is a book I wish I could recommend more. I thought the beginning was strong and it had the makings of a really solid YA story. However, somewhere in the middle of the book I feel like Aveyard sort of overbalances. I won't give details for obvious reasons, but there's a point where an author tries so hard to put up hurdles for their characters that they take the sting out of the dilemma.
Date published: 2017-09-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really Great This was a well thought out fantasy universe, and world building is something that deserves serious credit. Great story.
Date published: 2017-09-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved it I bought this book a couple months ago and I just got around to reading it but I'm so glad I did. The story goes in a way you would never expect (especially the ending) I loved this book that I immediatly bought the second and third.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good first book I bought this on a recommendation from a friend and I loved this book. It always kept me on edge and I read it in a day it was so riveting. I was disappointed with the next books, and found myself wishing I didn't buy the books. It's a good dystopian series but did not live up to the greatness of the first book. #plumreview
Date published: 2017-09-10
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!!!!!!!!! I got it as a Christmas gift from my aunt and it is one of my favourite books ever. It's a dystopian novel (think The Hungar Games) but the world is divied between red and silver blood. There are so many plot twists and it's just so good. Get this book, I promise, you will love it!!!!
Date published: 2017-09-09
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay It wasn't a bad book. It's just very similar to a lot of other books i've read. If your looking for that sort of thing you would probably enjoy this book.
Date published: 2017-09-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ordinary, But Enjoyable If You Like That Sort of Thing Red Queen is a fun, if bog-standard, young adult dystopian novel. The world is divided into Reds and Silvers. Silvers are silver-blooded and hereditarily superpowered; their powers ranging from the ability to control fire or metal, or burrow into someone's mind and control them, or any other number of powers. Reds have red blood and no powers. They're oppressed, kept poverty-stricken and used as cannon fodder in useless Silver wars. Our main character, Mare Barrow, is a Red on the cusp of adulthood, as is her best friend, Kilorn. Kilorn is nearly eighteen when the fisherman he is apprenticed to dies suddenly, leaving Kilorn no choice but to join the military. Thus starts our adventure with Mare, as she will do anything to keep her friend safe. A series of hijinks and situations later and Mare is working as a servant at the royal palace. She falls into the gladiatorial arena where noble girls are literally fighting it out to become the betrothed of crown prince Cal. However, instead of being electrocuted by the energy field protecting the arena, she survives and is discovered to have the power of electricity, sparking Mare's new nickname: the Lightning Girl. That her blood is red, not silver, is kept a desperate secret and she is affianced to younger prince, Maven, and trained in her new powers. Like the rest of the book, Mare is a pretty standard YA heroine caught between two brothers; of course, she is drawn to the brother she's not engaged to. Throw in a bit of rebellion and the narrative starts to take shape. It's not until a few twists are revealed at the end that the story really starts. Most of Red Queen feels like slow set-up to the remaining books in the series, trying to flesh out princes Cal and Maven, while always hinting at their potential downfall. Red Queen was ordinary in almost every way, but enjoyable enough that I will still pick up the second book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great This series is great because of the way it defies stereotypes and typical 'teen' storyline and characters while being told in a brilliant tone and writing style
Date published: 2017-09-01
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well-Written I love this series! Totally unpredictable, set in a unique and new world, and packed with characters with many dimensions, dystopian readers will fall in love! Beware though, there is a fourth and final book that doesn't come out for another year at least
Date published: 2017-09-01
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed... I enjoyed the book, but I didnt really care for the characters or care much in general by the end of the book. I found the book kinda chiche so I dont have much motivation to continue on with the series, but I see why people would like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intense. Power and love come together in this novel and had me hooked from the very first chapter. I cannot wait to read the next two novels in this series. Aveyard truly has a talent for writing in ways which will hook you in the beginning and leave you surprised yet curious in the end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read! I really just wanted to keep reading this book past when I decided I should go to sleep. I had to finish this book at 12 pm when I only had 2 chapters left! It kept me awake! As I kept reading it really played with my emotions and the big plot twist near the end really caught me off gaurd! This is a great read, and i recomend reading it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from loved it it was a really good read.. it was quite easy to read as well and once i picked it up i couldn't put it down until i was done. although it did remind me of the hunger games a little.. but if you liked the hunger games i'm pretty sure you will like this book as well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Definitely a dystopian type book Wasn't too captivated by this book. It was good....but by how much everyone was talking about it I was expecting more. Was very "been there done that"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Done before but one of my faves Many people are saying that this book has stolen plots from books such as The Hunger Games but I mean all dystopian stories are like this (or at least I have yet to find one that isn't). Great read. Left me mind blown. "Anyone can betray anyone".

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great book! I thought I would hate this book but I ended up loving it. The story was kind of predictable and cliche at once because there's the royalties and the commoner. But all in total, this is a great book. It's action packed and some cute romance between the characters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read I understand that the story is not the most original, but I thought it was really well done! Mare is very much a relatable and real type of character. She's not perfect, which makes her unique from a lot of other teen novel characters. I absolutely loved this book, but the rest of the series goes downhill after this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good read, but... The story of the Reds and Silvers seemed too familiar to me. The way society is set up reminded me too much of The Hunger Games' the capital vs. districts 1-13. Although it does not feature the games, the rebellion is very similar to Mockingjay and that may have threw me off a little bit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A fun read, but been done before The writing was quite simple, the story fairly formulaic...you definitely get the feeling you have read this book before. In the beginning I found the heroine to be admirable but any likable qualities she had, slowly begin to unravel and by the end of the book I found myself to be annoyed and almost disgusted by her. That being said, it is a fast paced and entertaining read - if you're looking for some light fluff to kill some time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A total fail Cliche and extremely cheesy. YA doesn't need to mean childish plots that steal from Red Rising and the Hunger Games. Quite possibly also the most inept rebels ever written.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok not the best, but not the worst. if you really don't have anything better to do, go for it. but i think there could be better books out there than this, just because it's pretty repetitive of a lot of other sci-fi/dystopian/fantasy YA books out there *cough cough* divergentthehungergamesTHEHUNGERGAMES* it's the same old same old. if you're looking for something new to read, then i recommend not reading this

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read This is great book in the YA fantasy genre. Interesting world-building and characters, with bearable amounts of teenage angst. I prefer the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas, but this was still an enjoyable read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CRAZY! This book was a wild ride from start to finish, full of plot twists and intense scenes where the results lie unknown. If you're looking for a fantasy, kick-butt novel, this is probably it. The main character is such a powerful person and it really shows during numerous epic scenes in the story. There are so many cool elements to this book, like the setting, the battles, and the different powers that the people possess. I would recommend this book to fans of Throne of Glass, The Kiss of Deception, and maybe the Lunar Chronicles

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I really enjoyed this book, I couldn't put it down and I want to read the next ones. I found the main character annoying at times and there were cliche over the top moments, but it definitely keeps your interest and it tells an interesting story. I liked the comparison to real world slavery where the reds are marginalized. I also liked the interesting powers of the silvers and the fact that all of the silvers were not evil. I really like how Mare has to face the people that she condemns to death, it makes an impact for her to see their faces and see their families and grieve for them. A lot of it was too dramatized for me, everything is over the top with too much power everywhere. About 3/4 of the way through I got kind of tired of the writing. Everything that was happening was so BIG and powerful. I also didn't like how Cal liked Mare so quickly and for no real reason. I did like that there wasn't a whole lot of brooding nonsense (i.e. he's so handsome and she's so beautiful constantly).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Un-put-down-able I stayed up late into the night finishing up this book! A world divided by blood color sure does have some uncanny similarities to our reality. This book is filled with royal intrigue, major plot twists that will make your head spin and action. I loved it and can't wait to read Glass Sword :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read I really like the concept behind this book and the plot itself - it didn't 'wow' me the way some other fantasy books have, but it's a good read and if you like fantasy books in general I think you would enjoy the book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read! Even though I'm in my mid-twenties, I really enjoyed this YA novel. Great action, great suspense and twists. I loved the moral and socio-economic elements to the story. Great read, excited to read the next book in the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OMG The plot twist made me want to throw the book out the window, jump with it because it's so amazing, roll down a hole, throw the book in fire, splash it in water, lay in front of a car, give myself and the book a funeral, and scream bubbles because thats how well the story was made, it just makes you rethink the book and your life and how the ending hit me like an invisible truck.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Exciting This series is one I will continue to follow. The plot is great, but the love triangle kind of gets in the way. As do most of them. It is also a little tedious in places, but definitely and enjoyable read with the plot twists.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from #plumreview What on earth did I just read?!?! So many feels, so little time to express them! Everything about this book was just so amazing. I had a hard time getting into it at first, though I'm not sure if that's the book or the fault of my previous book slump... either way, I loved everything about this book. There are so many books where there's insta-love but not this one, and the characters just made me feel so much. I also love that it wasn't all about the love, but that more took a backseat, like a side plot. It was still there, but not the main focus. The only thing that maybe needed to be improved was the world building, especially the part about the war since it was mentioned in the beginning but we never really got much more than that about it. Overall, my opinion on this book is that everyone in the world needs to read it, if they haven't already! If you read it... be prepared for all the feels!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tired I'm tired of the same stories and concept as Hunger Games and Divergent. I loved Hunger Games when I read the series and I thought Divergent as repetitive of that. Same goes for this one. I wouldn't bother reading to be honest. I also heard from a friend who read the entire trilogy that the third book's ending wasn't that great. Same as Divergent's ending was stupid. So I'm not going to bother with this one.

“Fascinating world building... Readers will be intrigued by a world that reflects today’s troubling issues concerning ethnic inequality, unfair distribution of wealth, pollution, warfare, political corruption, and the frightening power of the media.”
