There, before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.

To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess, and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard—a growing Red rebellion—even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction. One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays the only certainty is betrayal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I really enjoyed this! I bought this during the black Friday sale and I am really glad I did. It's kind of like the Hunger Games meets the Selection. The characters were well developed and there was never a lull in the storytelling. The world-building was very interesting as well. I'd definitely recommend this to any YA/fantasy reader.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! A very interesting story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters were phenomenally created and the world setting was also fantastic. I very much enjoyed the book and would read it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would read over and over and over.... Bought this in the summer in New Orleans and started reading it then. I put it down and forgot about it for several months so I started reading it a few days ago again and was immediately hooked and finished it in two days. It has an amazing story line and enjoyable scenes and interactions between the characters. I fell in love with the character Mare from the start and she is such a relatable character who drives you to want to fight for what you believe in! I would definitely read this more than once!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from its legit soooooooo good i just read this and i loved it, Aveyard's book is captivating and interesting and sooo over the edge badass, i love her writing style it is really a work of art all by itself and the character development is good and goes well with the plotline

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Only Okay 2.5-3 stars. I know I'm in the minority here and I'm glad so many people enjoyed this book, but I found it to be so...very...meh. The writing was fine and it was entertaining enough. There were just so many instances where I was thinking, "Yeah, I've seen this before". It was just too generic - lacking in originality and inventiveness and complex characters. Also, the main character bothered me to no end. The only thing I really liked about this book was the cover. A disappointing, over-hyped read that I will not be continuing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Enthralling! The Red Queen series is the next big thing! The book is super enthralling and is extremely hard to put down! Highly recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A gripping series I have read oher series that are similar like the hunger games, divergent, the selection etc. The thing I really like about this series is Mare. Unlike Katniss who by the third book has a million people sacrificing themselves for her (which doesn't feel necessary), Mare doesn't ask anyone to do anything she herself is not willing to do. She wants to do what's best for the greater good, not necessarily herself. I'm eagerly awaiting the third book to find out where the story is heading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fantasy world! I really enjoyed this book. The world the author created is very well developped. Even the second characters have more than a one dimension personnality. The idea of silver / red blood is quite original. The main character is relatable and flawed which I think is good for the story. A lot of events makes the story go fast. I would recommend this book for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I love the concept of this YA novel. It kind of reminded me of the "Hunger Games". I loved it and cannot wait for the third novel to come out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I loved this book! The characters are amazing and strong and the hint of romance is tasteful and not over done, its a perfect book. Read this and Glass Sword in two days!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Little Cliche, but Still Enjoyable The concept is sort of cliche, but I still found myself enjoying it quite a bit. The beginning was a bit slow but the ending has a big plot twist which made up for it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Enjoyable Nice light read. Has predictable tropes.
Date published: 2017-01-12
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little cliche, but okay... This book was okay. It had a little bit of everything; actions, suspense and romance. I have to admit it was very cliché and many parts I found were kind of predictable, although I did not really anticipate the revelation in the end. Excited to read Glass Sword.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 6 out of 10 Red Queen was ok , Was a hard book to get into ,and keep reading .Kind of wish Mare was a little less whiny and a bit more feisty Over all the book was ok ,will see what the Glass Sword will be like .
Date published: 2017-01-09
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fine, I guess? The novel was REALLY slow going for me at the beginning so it took me a while to finish it. It was fine, but at the same time it was kind of cliche.
Date published: 2017-01-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Eh The one thing I hear everyone say about is it's massive plot twist at the end. With all the hype around it, I wasn't that impressed. I had fun reading it, but because I felt like I knew everything that was going to happen before it actually happened. That massive plot twist was predictable. It was very cliché but things are cliché for a reason.
Date published: 2017-01-06
Rated 2 out of 5 by from has potential The writing style and the characters in this book weren't good; the first being a bit clumsy and the latter being very superficial and cliché. I think that the plot, however, has potential if it wasn't so similar to other YA novels.
Date published: 2017-01-06
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Has potential I didn't like the writing or the characters, the first felt a bit clumsy and the latter, very cliched and on the surface. I still think that the plot has some potential if not so many elements resemble other YA novels.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun and Interesting Fantasy I got this book for my birthday and though I found the beginning a little slow, once the story got rolling I found it hard to put down. It's a clever web of characters and facts, all of it coming together in the end in a way that you might see coming but still want to find out. I'm excited to finish the series.

Date published: 2017-01-01
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great but not AMAZING. I wanted to love this book, and in some ways I did. Yet, I found it excruciatingly predictable. I loved the main character and couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I would recommend this book, and definitely pick up the second.
Date published: 2017-01-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from TWO SITTING READ I've seen mixed reviews about this book but that doesn't change the fact that this took me out of my reading slump. I bought this online knowing nothing about the book beforehand apart from the synopsis I read that got me hooked. I don't regret it. I already have the sequel to this book in my collection and hoping for the rest :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AAAMAAAAAZZIIIIINNGGGG One of the best series i've ever read. Ate it up in one day and fell in love with all the characters, Mare, Maven, and cal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING Red Queen was definitely in the top 10 best books I've read all year. The plot was very interesting the whole way through, there truly never was a dull moment. I also loved the plot twist and how well it was done, I never saw it coming and made the ending so much more action packed. The romance aspect of the book was done so well in the beginning, but after a certain point in the book Mare seemed to change her feelings with Maven and Cal. Like one moment she would love Cal and feel nothing for Maven, and the next hate Cal but love Maven, then love Cal and Maven too. It felt a bit too much like a mood swing to me. I understand that one scene did make her hate Cal for a good reason, but she changed her mind so easily when she suddenly stopped hating him. I still loved the romance in the book though and was definitely fangirling for the most part. I loved the characters in this story so much. I really enjoyed Mare as a main character, she was strong, kind and super relatable. I loved how different she seemed from other characters I've read about, like she was no where near perfect in any aspect of her life, which is kind of relatable. I also enjoyed Cal and Maven, and their sibling rivalry because I have siblings and I know what it feels like. I also enjoyed them and their characteristics in general. I also loved basically every side character in the book, because they were just awesome!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love, love, LOVE!!! Oh Mah Gawd this book is fantastic. The entire series so far is amazing. I really hope everyone tries this series out because it is so incredible! It reminds me of Divergent (especially the second book in the series), except it is a High Fantasy book. READ IT!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great read Red Queen is probably one of my favorite books. I loved the world and the idea of having red and silver bloods. Mare being a mix of both, made this book even better. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVED IT I mean. WOW. I finished this book around 4 am and after waking up the next morning, I was itching to grab the next book (I received both books for Christmas) but I had to stop myself because great stories need time. It was a very hard temptation to resist I gotta tell ya.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, But something felt... Hmmm. I can definitely tell why this is getting the hype that it is. It's got an interesting premise, feisty heroine, and betrayals and plot twists that leave you with a knot in your stomach. It's lush and descriptive with minimal romance (and none at all of the gushy variety) and stakes higher than the perpetually stoned kid who sat next to me in art. Fast-paced, with a great balance of exposition and plot, I raced through it, desperate to make it to the end (even though I knew it had to end badly). I thoroughly enjoyed myself. That said, there were some things that kept it from being a five star book. For one, I feel awkward calling it wholly original when it felt like several overused concepts mix-and-matched into a cohesive story. Family jealousies and betrayals, lower classes rebelling against the higher classes, girl plucked from obscurity after discovering amazing talent - none of this is new. This isn't a problem - you'd be hard pressed to find any book that's completely original - except that it seemed so overwhelmingly recycled that if it weren't for some really solid prose and character development, I would have written it off entirely as another attempt to wiggle into an over-saturated genre. There was also a distinct lack of healthy female relationships. I guess I can't really complain here, because there was a general lack of healthy relationships going on everywhere (that's sort of the point of the book) but somehow this has become a bit of a marker for me for a great book, and this one didn't make it. Also, we had a bit of a Hans situation going on, in that there was very little foreshadowing leading up to the big betrayal. I felt like I should have seen it coming, but looking back, there was very little way you could have. But maybe I just need to go through it again to look for the super subtle hints or something. I'm being nitpicky because it's a lot easier to talk about the stuff that I didn't like, as the stuff I did is rather harder to pin down. Read this book. It's great, and exciting, and heart wrenching, with a heroine who won't quit and a finale that will leave your jaw hanging and your stomach twisting. I don't know if it's worth all the hype, but it's definitely worth most of it, and that's enough for me to say that I will definitely be anxiously waiting for the next one. (I've figured out why it felt recycled. It read a great deal like Shadow and Bone. Society with ruling upper class defined by special abilities, conscription and fighting wars, girl from lower class discovers upper class abilities, period of adjustment in the big city, close to/romantic affiliations with the powerful, creepy ambitious guy. There are many many ways they are different, but there are a lot of ways they are similar, which is what tipped off my unoriginal radar. I'm sure lots of people would find it very original.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from interesting This had an interesting concept about blood, but the rest of it seems overdone. It was overall pretty good though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well plotted YA book I am an adult who sometimes reads YA. More often than not, the writing is terrible, the characters are whiny and I can't finish it. The first book in the series was well plotted, well-written and engaging. I did not finish book #2 but this one was good.
Date published: 2016-12-20
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it I fell in love with the cover of this book before I even knew what the book was about. I started reading not even knowing what the book was about. I caved in and checked GoodReads to see what the book was about after about two pages. It sounded good enough, so I continued. Mare Barror lives in the slums. I don't know if this book was taken in the past or future, but that doesn't really matter. She is a Red, which means she has red blood. The other people are called Silver. They have special abilities to control nature and other elements. The Silver people are prosperous and the Reds are basically servants to them. Red's family is struggling to survive. All her brothers were enlisted in the Silver army. It is basically a death sentence. When a Red turns 18 they get dragged into the army unless they have a job. Mare was about to be enlisted but a generous stranger gets her a job in the castle. When in the castle she realizes she is more than just a 'Red.' Without spoiling I have to say that this book is a Must Read. I definitely recommend. I would like it if there was more of a love story but not all books follow those lines. That's fine. Haha. On to the next book now :)

The ending is heart wrenching and so unexpected!! Mare is such a strong female, someone to look up to. I highly recommend this book, it's a nice break from realty and into this amazing world where red and silver are not as different as they think.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Too cookie-cuter. Basically took every other YA Dystopian plot and mashed it together into one. I saw pieces of other books in this book that were so obviously copied. Don't waste your money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth a Read While not as good as the first, which was an interesting twist on plot that has become a touch over used, it was still a great YA book! I read through it in one sitting - literally couldn't put it down. Yes it has some issue that are common to the middle book of a trilogy but nothing out of the ordinary, as its difficult to have a climax when part of point of the ending is to get to the last book (case in point the twin towers book). Great book overall and can't wait for the next one!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little bit disappointed From all the amazing reviews and raving, I was really expecting something spectacular. This fell short, I think--the romantic lines were really quite insta-love, but the twist at the end made buying it worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book Once I started to read Red Queen I couldn't put it down, to the extent that coffee spilt all over the pages. The main character is so inspiring and never leaves you bored.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Love Love At first this book intimidated me a lot with the size of the font and how much content there was. However as soon as started to read I couldn't stop and I got through this too quick I love this book and the unique story behind it I also appreciate that she has the same last name as me "Barrow" which isn't a very common name and I've never seen in a book before.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read! Although the whole teenage-girl-has-powers-in-an-oppressed-society trope has been overused, it was still a fun and angst-y read that I loved nonetheless. It was great! I had a fantastic time screaming in agony at the plot-twists.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Something slightly different This series is going somewhere, it's got some fresh takes on the same common people vs the elite category. World building is getting there, but it was possibly not enough details for too many families. #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was okay I know this book is very loved among many, but to me, it it was not. I was intrigued for the first bit and again near the end, but the middle of book I had to fight to keep interested. That is where my 3/5 came from. I liked the story-line and the characters but only to a certain point. I couldn’t connect or enjoy the book like I have enjoyed some others. I do plan on continuing the series, although it is not top in priority list.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! This was in fact, one of the best books I've ever read. I currently own the first 2 and can't wait for feb. 7th when the third book comes out! I think the overall plot is very unique (where others might disagree on this, I cannot find any book whose plot correlates to this ones [if their talking about that whole dystopian plot where they overthrow the government--- I mean it's in every book what can you say]). The main protagonist is strong and doesn't rely on other (men I stg). I like that in a protagonist, it makes the book real different you know. I honestly recommend you read this though, I mean first chapter? I was instantly addicted. Whichever friends I recommended are now extremely into it and fangirling as we wait for the 3rd instalment. ALSO ITS LIKE DIVERGENT AND THE HUNGER GAMES TOGETHER IN INE BOOK. IF YOU LIKED THOSE, YOULL LIKE THIS GURANANTEE.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great When i first started i was expecting a typical YA dystopian novel and while sometimes it can follow that cliche, this book still managed to stand out. Amazing characters that i actually like, it's definitely worth the read

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast enjoyable read! Purchased this for my elementary school for the grade 7&8's. Fast paced and action packed. with very mild romance and mild language ( 2 B***). Absolutely loved it as a adult and I know the kids will soon be fighting over it as well. I can't wait to read the sequel. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite book! Honestly, this is one of my all time favourite books (and I have read a lot of books!). It's typical YA but so so much more. The characters are very real and relatable. Mare is frustrating but very likeable. AND THE PLOT TWIST AT THE END. I feel like I should have seen it coming, but I was completely blindsided. Amazing story. Loved the sequel too, looking forward to the next one!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from worth the read I found this to be a mix between game of thrones and dystopian novels such as the hunger games. It was an easy read and definitely left me wanting to read Glass Sword.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book This is an easy read and can be finished in a few days. Similar to other dystopian series. It is close to how I expected it to be, the author succeeds in getting you invested in the characters and you are left wanting to read the next book in the series

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favourite book series. Didn't have high expectations going into this book, but ended up loving the writing style, all of the well-developed characters, and especially loved the protagonist. Immediately picked up Glass Sword!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent, but the sequel gets worse This book is basically a toss-up of a lot of stuff that's hot in YA right now: a love triangle (or star?) where everyone's into the protagonist, a dystopia with wide class divides, a female protagonist who kicks ass, etc. Given that, it's really predictable, and the writing is uneven at spots, but this book is generally fast-paced and fun. The characters are mostly types and not very special, but their powers are sometimes pretty cool. You can find better, and the sequel isn't great, but it's not boring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the best book I have read in a long time! I have recently finished a book the I loved. I was not sure if I would find a book that was as good but I did! this book made never want to put it down. It is such a page turner. It is full of romance and heartbreak and you will never now what will happen next. I will definitely buy and read the next book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best YA i've read yet This book is awesome. I feel like i've been waiting for a character and series like this for a long time. The drama, the ups and downs, the traps, the chases, the battles - while it is certainly of the distopian theme that we are seeing all too often in YA - this book not only captures your imagination but it takes you on twist and turns with a swiftness and un-expectancy that has become rare in novels. While at times, the main character can be lost in self-pity/ depression it's all a part of the characters journey and development so that at the end of the book you are not left with the same character you saw at the beginning. The sequel is equally if not more thrilling. Can't wait for book 3!
