Mare Barrow’s world is divided by blood—those with common, Red blood serve the Silver-blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. There, before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.

To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess, and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard—a growing Red rebellion—even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction. One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays the only certainty is betrayal.

This sweeping story of palace intrigue, class hierarchy, and deception will keep readers hurtling along, desperate to find out Mare’s fate. Her honesty and determination, quick wit, and no-holds-barred attitude will surely make readers fall in love with her.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Too cookie-cuter. Basically took every other YA Dystopian plot and mashed it together into one. I saw pieces of other books in this book that were so obviously copied. Don't waste your money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SUCH a good book Has the BEST twist in it. HIGHLY recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really good! Quite enjoyed this! Well written, engaging characters, interesting plot. Can't wait to read the next one!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth a Read While not as good as the first, which was an interesting twist on plot that has become a touch over used, it was still a great YA book! I read through it in one sitting - literally couldn't put it down. Yes it has some issue that are common to the middle book of a trilogy but nothing out of the ordinary, as its difficult to have a climax when part of point of the ending is to get to the last book (case in point the twin towers book). Great book overall and can't wait for the next one!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from pretty good It seemed to be your basic teen plot. not sure if im going to read the third. It was still pretty good

Rated 5 out of 5 by from FANTASTIC I can see why this got so popular, I can't get enough of this series!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little bit disappointed From all the amazing reviews and raving, I was really expecting something spectacular. This fell short, I think--the romantic lines were really quite insta-love, but the twist at the end made buying it worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Holy Sh*t Loved it I can't get enough of this series! I first started reading this book during exam season and couldn't put it down even though I had to study! I loved all the twists and turns this series takes you on. I can't wait for the finale book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book Once I started to read Red Queen I couldn't put it down, to the extent that coffee spilt all over the pages. The main character is so inspiring and never leaves you bored.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good series I can't wait for the 3rd book. Recommend waiting till the 3rd one comes out so you don't have to painstakingly wait like I do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Love Love At first this book intimidated me a lot with the size of the font and how much content there was. However as soon as started to read I couldn't stop and I got through this too quick I love this book and the unique story behind it I also appreciate that she has the same last name as me "Barrow" which isn't a very common name and I've never seen in a book before.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Over hyped Full of YA cliches and it was predictable. I read it because of the great recommendations but was sadly disappointed that it didn't live up the to hype.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing Though a few parts were confusing, this story was AMAZING and I absolutely enjoyed every moment reading it. Can't wait to read Glass Sword!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good It didn't sound too unique at first, but it was a good book and I understand why it got so popular.
Date published: 2016-11-16
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was okay Not the best. Full of YA tropes. Felt disconnected from the book. Some parts were cool, most were not.
Date published: 2016-11-16
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read! Although the whole teenage-girl-has-powers-in-an-oppressed-society trope has been overused, it was still a fun and angst-y read that I loved nonetheless. It was great! I had a fantastic time screaming in agony at the plot-twists.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Something slightly different This series is going somewhere, it's got some fresh takes on the same common people vs the elite category. World building is getting there, but it was possibly not enough details for too many families. #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was okay I know this book is very loved among many, but to me, it it was not. I was intrigued for the first bit and again near the end, but the middle of book I had to fight to keep interested. That is where my 3/5 came from. I liked the story-line and the characters but only to a certain point. I couldn’t connect or enjoy the book like I have enjoyed some others. I do plan on continuing the series, although it is not top in priority list.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it!!! Victoria Aveyard is amazing!! It's a good distopian setting and the characters all incredible and strong! Great series so far, can't wait for kings cage!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good start! I really enjoyed reading this! I like the plot, although some of the characters bothered me at times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! This was in fact, one of the best books I've ever read. I currently own the first 2 and can't wait for feb. 7th when the third book comes out! I think the overall plot is very unique (where others might disagree on this, I cannot find any book whose plot correlates to this ones [if their talking about that whole dystopian plot where they overthrow the government--- I mean it's in every book what can you say]). The main protagonist is strong and doesn't rely on other (men I stg). I like that in a protagonist, it makes the book real different you know. I honestly recommend you read this though, I mean first chapter? I was instantly addicted. Whichever friends I recommended are now extremely into it and fangirling as we wait for the 3rd instalment. ALSO ITS LIKE DIVERGENT AND THE HUNGER GAMES TOGETHER IN INE BOOK. IF YOU LIKED THOSE, YOULL LIKE THIS GURANANTEE.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great When i first started i was expecting a typical YA dystopian novel and while sometimes it can follow that cliche, this book still managed to stand out. Amazing characters that i actually like, it's definitely worth the read

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast enjoyable read! Purchased this for my elementary school for the grade 7&8's. Fast paced and action packed. with very mild romance and mild language ( 2 B***). Absolutely loved it as a adult and I know the kids will soon be fighting over it as well. I can't wait to read the sequel. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 4.5 AMAZING if you're looking for a book about courage, love and secrets, this book is for you. I really enjoyed it and it was an easy read. I did not see the plot twist coming at all!! i had to read the pages again to let it process. i really liked this book and recommend it!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great book! If you're going through Hunger Games withdrawl like I was you should definitely get this book!
Date published: 2016-11-09
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite book! Honestly, this is one of my all time favourite books (and I have read a lot of books!). It's typical YA but so so much more. The characters are very real and relatable. Mare is frustrating but very likeable. AND THE PLOT TWIST AT THE END. I feel like I should have seen it coming, but I was completely blindsided. Amazing story. Loved the sequel too, looking forward to the next one!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from AMAZING IT WAS A GOOD READ I NEVER WANTED TO PUT IT DOWN
Date published: 2016-11-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from worth the read I found this to be a mix between game of thrones and dystopian novels such as the hunger games. It was an easy read and definitely left me wanting to read Glass Sword.
Date published: 2016-11-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book This is an easy read and can be finished in a few days. Similar to other dystopian series. It is close to how I expected it to be, the author succeeds in getting you invested in the characters and you are left wanting to read the next book in the series
Date published: 2016-11-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favourite book series. Didn't have high expectations going into this book, but ended up loving the writing style, all of the well-developed characters, and especially loved the protagonist. Immediately picked up Glass Sword!
Date published: 2016-11-02
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent, but the sequel gets worse This book is basically a toss-up of a lot of stuff that's hot in YA right now: a love triangle (or star?) where everyone's into the protagonist, a dystopia with wide class divides, a female protagonist who kicks ass, etc. Given that, it's really predictable, and the writing is uneven at spots, but this book is generally fast-paced and fun. The characters are mostly types and not very special, but their powers are sometimes pretty cool. You can find better, and the sequel isn't great, but it's not boring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the best book I have read in a long time! I have recently finished a book the I loved. I was not sure if I would find a book that was as good but I did! this book made never want to put it down. It is such a page turner. It is full of romance and heartbreak and you will never now what will happen next. I will definitely buy and read the next book.
Date published: 2016-10-23
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I absolutely loved this book. I don't remember how many nights I stayed up to finish a chapter. After finishing, I jumped to buy Glass Sword.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best YA i've read yet This book is awesome. I feel like i've been waiting for a character and series like this for a long time. The drama, the ups and downs, the traps, the chases, the battles - while it is certainly of the distopian theme that we are seeing all too often in YA - this book not only captures your imagination but it takes you on twist and turns with a swiftness and un-expectancy that has become rare in novels. While at times, the main character can be lost in self-pity/ depression it's all a part of the characters journey and development so that at the end of the book you are not left with the same character you saw at the beginning. The sequel is equally if not more thrilling. Can't wait for book 3!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome!!!! I love this book so much. It has so much excitement and twists and turns it is amazing. I read a lot of YA books and I am very good at guessing how it is going to end, but, this book had the biggest twist ever that I didn't expect and it was totally amazing. You must read this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic read! Couldn't put it down I purchased this book when it was released and it went unread until now (boy am I kicking myself for that one)! I could not get enough of this story and can not wait to read more. This novel has everything; great characters, action, love, hate, sadness, deceit and plot twists (oh, the plot twists!!!). This is the Hunger Games meets The Bone Season and The Selection all wrapped up in a beautifully written book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fantastic Weaving of YA High Fantasy Elements While it draws parallels to other novels in the genre, Aveyard does a great job of making the world and plot her own! Must read for YA High Fantasy fans or those who want to get into the genre!
