Blending the iconoclastic feminism of The Notorious RBG and the confident irreverence of Go the F**ck to Sleep, a brazen and empowering illustrated collection that celebrates inspirational badass women throughout history, based on the popular Tumblr blog.

Well-behaved women seldom make history. Good thing these women are far from well behaved . . .

Illustrated in a contemporary animation style, Rejected Princesses turns the ubiquitous "pretty pink princess" stereotype portrayed in movies, and on endless toys, books, and tutus on its head, paying homage instead to an awesome collection of strong, fierce, and yes, sometimes weird, women: warrior queens, soldiers, villains, spies, revolutionaries, and more who refused to behave and meekly accept their place.

An entertaining mix of biography, imagery, and humor written in a fresh, young, and riotous voice, this thoroughly researched exploration salutes these awesome women drawn from both historical and fantastical realms, including real life, literature, mythology, and folklore. Each profile features an eye-catching image of both heroic and villainous women in command from across history and around the world, from a princess-cum-pirate in fifth century Denmark, to a rebel preacher in 1630s Boston, to a bloodthirsty Hungarian countess, and a former prostitute who commanded a fleet of more than 70,000 men on China’s seas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute Awesomeness Rejected Princesses is amazing! It contains beautiful artwork and a variety of entries about a multitude of women throughout history in an unapologetic fashion. The author shows both the good and bad sides -- if any could be found -- of some of these historical figures to demonstrate their depth and humanness. I'm also trying to get the entire world to read this book website. That's a pretty good indicator that you should get your hands on a copy of Rejected Princesses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Boys and girls alike need to know about these amazing women! Grown-ups too :) This is a gorgeously illustrated, diverse, and inspiring collection of tales about strong women of history and legend. I've been reading the more PG biographies to my 7-year-old daughter at bedtime each night since we got the book (entries are organized from PG to R and have warning icons for mature content). She pores over each illustration, laughs out loud from the irreverent storytelling, and marvels that most of these stories are about real women. Reading this together has generated many discussions about the struggles that women go through in order to make their mark in the world. I'm looking forward to returning again and again to this book--and the website, which covers a new person every few weeks--as she matures and can handle hearing more histories involving abuse, violence, and/or tragedy. This has been such an accessible way to introduce her to the Big Bads of society and how one can rise above. Totally buying this book as Christmas presents for parent friends of kickass boys and girls that should get to know these kickass women. Highly recommend.
