Michael Jackson's former bodyguards reveal the amazing truths of the superstar's final 2 years--his life in hiding with his children, the financial crises that forced him into the ill-fated This Is It tour, and the events that led to his shocking death.
On the brink of financial ruin and driven from his beloved sanctuary at Neverland , Michael Jackson spent his final years living like a nomad, moving his 3 children from the Middle East to Ireland to Las Vegas to Virginia and finally back to Los Angeles, living in near-total seclusion in a futile attempt to escape a world that wouldn't leave him alone.
Starting with Jackson's secret return to the U.S. in 2006, Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard--a veteran security professional and a brash, untested rookie, both single fathers themselves--served as the singer's personal security team. Stationed at his side nearly 24/7, they were the gatekeepers between Michael and the outside world, making them the only 2 men who know what 60 million fans around the world are still desperate to find out: What really happened to the King of Pop?; How Michael and his children stayed under the radar from day to day; the efforts required to give the 3 kids some semblance of a normal life; the simple joys they found to fill their days; the true extent of Michael's financial crises (Whitfield and Beard were often not paid for months); the open warfare with the Jackson family; and the star's increasing paranoia--the truth is far more compelling than anything previously reported.
An indispensable piece of pop-culture history, Remember the Time is the heartfelt story of a tragic and troubled family, the devastating cost of fame, and the lengths to which a father will go to protect and provide for his children. Remember the Time dismantles the tabloid myths once and for all and gives Michael Jackson back his humanity.
BILL WHITFIELD, a New York native, and JAVON BEARD, who grew up in South Central Los Angeles, served for two and a half years as the personal security team for Michael Jackson. They have appeared on Nightline, and Good Morning America, and have worked with numerous other high-profile clients, including Sean "Diddy" Combs, Andre Harrell...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read I have one short thing to say about the book. The authors have genuinely picked up for Michael Jackson and really made you feel for him. Are they always telling the truth in the book? Who knows but as a huge MJ fan, I really enjoyed this quick read and feel it was a great homage to the King of Pop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Absoloute Must for MJ fans! This book is absolutely fantastic! A real look into the last few years of this legend's life told by two everyday guys who happened to also be his body guards. I grew a greater respect into the life of Michael, but at the same time, grew a better understanding of things like his use of drugs to perform better. A beautiful piece of biography that the authors simply wanted to share with the fans, unlike many others who just wanted of the Jackson empire. Pick this book up NOW!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from CLOSER TO MICHAEL I just bought this book 5 days ago and already Im finished it. while some of the stuff made me laugh out loud, other parts made me real sad. It goes to show you how currupt his world around him really was. Anyone and everyone putting their hands in his pockets. It wasnt fair, and he was always taken advantage of. No wonder he didnt trust anyone. Ive been a huge fan since 1981 and Im greatful that Bill and Javon shared their story. It was a very emotional story for me, even though it brought me a little closer to Michael. Bless him and his sweet children. MIchelle

Editorial Reviews

“Remember the Time foregoes sensationalism in favor of a sympathetic, but unsentimental examination of life behind the gates in Michael Jackson’s final years. Colby’s portrait—told through conversational accounts by Jackson’s former bodyguards, Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard—is by turns straightforward, humorous, absorbing and tragic. A single father facing enormous financial pressures and a vagabond existence while trying to find some peace and joy with his three young children, Jackson is revealed, not the as ‘freak show’ the media so often presented him, but as human. These recollections not only help fill in some of the biographical gaps in Jackson’s life but demonstrate with unflinching detail the real-life price of fame.” —Joseph Vogel, author of Man in the Music: The Creative Life & Work of Michael Jackson
