about

As the bloodied and weary galaxy faces battle once more, the Jedi take on the formidable task of bringing the last of the Empire into the light. . . .

From the ashes of the New Republic—torn to shreds by the savage Yuuzhan Vong forces—the newly formed Galactic Alliance has risen, determined to bring peace to the entire galaxy. But first the Yuuzhan Vong must be contained once and for all. And so Luke Skywalker seeks a world long lost to legend: Zonama Sekot, a sentient planet believed to have repelled an invasion by the Yuuzhan Vong decades ago. Deciphering the enigmatic secrets of Zonama Sekot just might turn the tides of a relentless war.

Aboard the Jade Shadow, Luke, his wife Mara, Jacen Solo, and other Jedi head off into the Unknown Regions, where rumors and clues suggest Zonama Sekot might be found. Yet the mission has barely begun when the searchers stumble into a horrific battle. The Imperial Remnant, in retreat from the mighty Yuuzhan Vong, is about to be destroyed. It would seem those aboard the Jade Shadow have little choice but to leave the Empire to its fate. But these are no ordinary space travelers, they are Jedi. . . .

Features a bonus section following the novel that includes a primer on the Star Wars expanded universe, and over half a dozen excerpts from some of the most popular Star Wars books of the last thirty years!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A momentum killer I was looking forward to the Force Heretic trilogy. I thought a trip through the Unknown Regions would be exciting and a refreshing change from the Yuuzhon Vong war. I was wrong. This book slogs and barely anything noteworthy happens. The book doesn't have chapters and is poor written as well. There's some absurd conversations and the authors threw out plenty of character development that had taken place over the last few books of the series. The Force Heretic Trilogy is feels completely out of place and destroys the momentum the NJO had. This trilogy is easily the low light of an otherwise excellent series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent book Much more balanced between action and background than some others in the series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beginning of the End...for who I will start by saying that I basically know how NJO is going to end, but of course this book was first published some 9 years ago, and the story has leaked out a bit. However, Williams & Dix write a credible beginning to this mini-trilogy that establishes 3 separate storylines, each which feels like it could lead up the the penultimate ending for the series. First Luke & Mara are off to find the living planet, Zonoma Sekot at the behest of the recently deceased Jedi, Vergere. While on route, they acquire an unlikely ally. Han & Leia find themselves trying to patch together some of the communication relays to outlyng planets yet to have felt the Yuuzhan Vong's might, or have they? And Nom Anor, the disgraced Vong intendant, discovers the Jeedai heresy and sees a way to rise back into a position of power for himself despite the heresy being detrimental to the Yuuzhan Vong race. The action for each of the three plots is exciting, but the possibility of the dangers becoming more intense in Book 2 of the arc, Refugee, are too obvious to stop reading now...so on we go.
