Foremost and nearest to his throne, By perfect robes of triumph known, And likest him in look and tone, The holy Stephen kneels." There is one class of men whose connection with any enterprise gives to it the highest sanction, and helps more to spread and perpetuate its fame than perhaps any thing else. To what class, think you, do I refer? Is it composed of the rich or the learned? Of men of lofty positional eminence, statesmen, artists, poets or conquerors? No. It consists of martyrs--men who have proved their devotion to the cause they espoused by dying for it. In all ages and lands, amid all stages of civilization, from the rudest barbarism to the highest refinement, the memory of martyrs has been held sacred, and real and traditional relics of their careers preserved with the greatest care. Indeed, the heroic element developed in such constancy and fortitude as they manifest naturally commands the admiration of their enemies and the profoundest love of their friends. Science has her list of martyrs, and, to-day, points with honest pride to the monuments which she has erected to keep their fame fresh in the heart of the world. Liberty has her long, long list of martyrs, whose names were not born to die--whose dust is found wherever she has struggled with her foes; and in the wreath which a grateful humanity has twined about her brow, the most imperishable flowers are ...
