Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must Have and Must Read For all fans of retro anime or manga this is definitely something you have to have in your collection. The presentation of this manga is absolutely stunning. The colours, pages and the cover as well as the box are very sturdy and will definitely last you a long time. They did not cheap out on this reprint. The story also includes The Adolescence of Utena as well as a poster. Anyone who is a lover of magical girls, fencing, swords and romance will love this manga. It has a very wide cast of characters that are all so unique and beautifully fleshed out. I really can't find any faults in this manga. I sat down and read the whole series in a single day, I honestly could not put it down. This manga is a masterpiece. I have absolutely no regrets buying it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from You'll either love it or hate it Revolutionary Girl Utena (RGU) is about a girl named Utena who sword-fights members of the student counsel to find out the truth about the prince who saved her life as a child...but that's not what's important. The plot and characters were made to serve as allegories for...well, whatever you interpret them to be! If you like a straightforward story free of plot holes, Utena is not for you. However, if you like analyzing texts, symbolism, or unique Magical Girl stories, then you'll have a blast with Utena! If you have seen the anime, and are wondering whether the manga is worth your time, I would say ABSOLUTELY. In fact, I prefer the manga version over the anime because it is succinct. The anime was 39 episodes, and they got rather repetitive as time went on. The manga solves this problem with better pacing and omission of filler and the black rose arc (save for a one chapter bonus story). Furthermore, the art is really beautiful, and the case that the two volumes come in is really sturdy and sleek. One issue I had with the pacing, though, is that I felt the characters were less fleshed out in the manga. Specifically, the student counsel member, Juri, was given a really interesting arc in the anime where she had a crush on another female student. That arc is replaced by a small bonus chapter where she has a crush on a male student instead. This took away a lot of the complexity in her character, in my opinion, and I missed that representation in this version. Despite that one critique, this is still one of my favourite series EVER! And the manga will be the version that I go back to when I want to revisit Utena's world from now on.
