about

The fifth book and the exciting conclusion to bestselling author Kelley Armstrong's "impossible-to-put-down" Cainsville series, in which she mixes hard-hitting crime writing with phenomenal world-building to create a brand of fiction all her own.

When Olivia Taylor-Jones found out she was not actually the adopted child of a privileged Chicago family but of a notorious pair of convicted serial killers, her life exploded. Running from the fall-out, she found a refuge in the secluded but oddly welcoming town of Cainsville, Illinois, but she couldn't resist trying to dig out the truth about her birth parents' crimes. She began working with Gabriel Walsh, a fiendishly successful criminal lawyer who also had links to the town; their investigation soon revealed Celtic mysteries at work in Cainsville, and also entangled Olivia in a tense love triangle with the calculating Gabriel and her charming biker boyfriend, Ricky. Worse, troubling visions revealed to Olivia that the three of them were reenacting an ancient drama pitting the elders of Cainsville against the mysterious Huntsmen with Olivia as the prize.
In the series' fifth and final novel, not only does Gabriel's drug addict mother, who he thought was dead, make a surprise reappearance, but Kelley Armstrong delivers a final scary and surprising knock-out twist. It turns out a third supernatural force has been at work all along, a dark and malevolent entity that has had its eye on Olivia since she was a baby and wants to win at any cost.
KELLEY ARMSTRONG is the internationally bestselling author of the thirteen-book Women of the Otherworld series, the Nadia Stafford crime novels and this series set in the fictional town of Cainsville, Illinois, which also includes the novels Omens, Visions, Deceptions and Betrayals. She is also the author of the hit crime novels City o...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rituals The Cainsville series kind of lost it in book four, so I was very happy to see that it redeemed itself for the finale. Well written, exciting and fun!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard to say goodbye I loved this series. It was a lot different from her other series with an entirely different folk lore culture to pull from. I really enjoyed the character of Liv, and Kelley continues to write exciting and strong female leads, but both Gabriel and Ricky were equally as strong. There were a few plot holes that never really got answered, so I am hoping for some novellas to tighten that up

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not ready to say goodbye What should I say about this book? The last in a beloved series, whose characters I held close as though they were friends I wished to cherish. This is a book that grasped me from the first word. It fulfilled my hopes for the three main characters, and yet it still left me wanting more. I am not one who wants to let go, and these stories and characters are going to be hard to let go of, even those I don't like. The plot was strong, twisting and turning, introducing new characters still, who I loved (some of them) and abhorred (one of them) which really is just the mark of good writing. Liv, Gabriel and Ricky are each so different, but carry some similarities, and in this book you get to see what characteristics they've taken on from each other. The thing that I think I appreciated most about this book is how there was humour imbued within it, even when bad things were happening it didn't feel too dreadful and heavy. I understand Kelley Armstrong will be writing more short fiction in Cainsville, which is good, because I don't yet want to leave.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great This was the last book in the Cainsville series. I really enjoyed this book and this series in general. We finally get a conclusion to the series and Olivia finally makes her choice. Although the ending was a little too, everyone is happy best case scenario all wrapped up in a bow. I love anything Kelley Armstrong writes. I really liked the lore in these books its definitely different from the other fantasy books out there. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great series!! I really liked this series. It was different and interesting but it was one of those endings that's wrapped it up all nicely in a bow. An everybody wins ending and I find those boring and predictable. Besides that I loved this series and highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ofcourse I loved it it's written by Kelley Armstrong One of my all time favorite authors Kelley Armstrong. I've been waiting for this book forever!!! I didn't want this series Cainsville to end. It's everything you hoped for and more. Kelley has an amazing knack for delivering mystery, intrigue, suspense etc. I have all her series. Each one delves into different folklore and such. This one was a page turner (they all are) I didn't want it to end i kept reading and reading knowing i was almost finished that made me sad but with Kelley the great news is all her series are like this. I strongly recommend all her books. Rituals was the last of the Cainsville series it was brilliantly written and a great ending to a great series. Waiting for this one had me reread the series plus read her other ones like Darkest Rising or Darkest Powers or ... Otherworld Series ... see? Trust me Kelley Armstrong never disappoints in all genres and age groups she has you covered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Series! All good things must sadly come to an end. And that includes my favourite series from one of my all time favourite authors. I knew the ending would be satisfying and one that was well plotted and arranged. Everything seemed naturally fitting, and though I won’t spoil the ending, I found there to be loose ends, however, left the reader to interpret what is likely to come. Knowing Kelley as well, she will continue in smaller stories through novellas very soon. Since this is also the last book of the Cainsville series, I can’t say much, if anything at all, because one should begin from the first book, Omens. As Kelley’s backlist consists of many genres, this is a perfect mix of everything she’s done: fantasy, horror, mystery, crime, suspense, and even a dash of romance. In Omens, we are introduced to Olivia who’d discovered she is adopted, and her real parents are serial killers. She is then taken to the secluded town of Cainsville where she takes refuge, and not too long later, makes it home. Her story then (in order) travels through Visions, Deceptions, Betrayals, and now finishes with Rituals, where she is trying to unveil the mystery of parent’s crimes, while also battling Celtic folklore that involves her adopted parent's lawyer, Gabriel, and her biker boyfriend, Ricky. For anyone who is into genre fiction, this is a great mix that should not be missed. And especially starting with Omens, you’ll want to read the rest, which is all now unveiled with Rituals at the end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great ending Finished this in a little over two sittings (dang work kept getting in the way), as sad as I am to see this series end, I loved every minute of this book! Kelley pulls you deep into her stories and her characters, giving readers an all consuming new world to live in between the pages. I cannot wait for what is next from her!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best series ever! If you've never read a Kelley Armstrong novel before, the Cainsville series is the perfect place to start. Rituals, the final book, was everything I'd hoped it would be--a truly epic finale. Armstrong's writing is so easy to fall into, and Olivia made for an endearing, fierce, and thoughtful protagonist. Do yourself a favour, folks, and pick up this series! Atmospherically speaking, they'd be perfect for fall reading.

Editorial Reviews

“Just like Armstrong’s Otherworld series, Cainsville comes to a tense, satisfying head in Rituals.” —InversePraise for Kelley Armstrong's Cainsville series:“Kelley Armstrong sure knows how to spin a yarn. . . . Betrayals, Armstrong’s best book yet, is the fourth novel set in the otherworldly town of Cainsville. . . . Along with the supernatural, Armstrong knows her ratiocination.” —The Globe and Mail “Armstrong’s name is synonymous with great storytelling, and this Cainsville series is definitely being set up to deliver a heck of a surprise when it all comes to an end.” —Suspense Magazine“Impossible-to-put-down. . . . Bring on the next Cainsville volume, please.” —Sarah Weinman “[Kelley Armstrong's] dispatches from this village filled with sinister secrets are going to be keeping her readers up well into the night.” —Linwood Barclay“Kelley Armstrong has paranormal elements in her classic mysteries but there are no ghouls, ghosts, werewolves or fairies and that’s why readers who loathe crossovers will love this series. [S]mart, cleverly plotted and really well written and you don’t have to ignore the vampires to get to the good stuff.” —The Globe and Mail“Sometimes big, bad things really do come in small packages and no one is more adept at unwrapping them than [Armstrong].” —Providence Journal “I am not a fan of mysteries that cross over into other genres, and I don’t like books that begin with infant narrators. So when I tell you that, despite that, Omens kept me reading on, you can bet it’s a good book. . . . A clever whodunit with some very nice twists and the fantasy actually works.” —Margaret Cannon, The Globe and Mail“Armstrong creates heroines who are smart and strong, but with real weaknesses and vulnerabilities. They may be wrapped up in the supernatural, but they are realistic and relatable.” —Winnipeg Free Press“One of the best new series debuts this year! With its compelling characters and completely original set-up, Omens delivers a powerful combination of suspenseful thrills and supernatural chills. I can’t wait to read more!” —Lisa Gardner, New York Times bestselling author of Touch & Go  “Like the creepy, spooky town of Cainsville, Kelley Armstrong’s Omens lured me in. I was busy, way too busy for this book, which, through a series of surprises and sleights of hand, had me conspiring for ways to get back to the gripping story, the colorfully bizarre cast of characters, and the clever, strong, smart heroine at its center. Don’t pick this book up if you have anything else to do. It will grab you by the collar and won’t let you up for air until it’s good and ready. And once you’re done, you won’t soon forget it.” —Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of In the Blood
