about

New York Times bestselling author Cora Carmack's young adult debut: Roar.

In a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world's deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora's been groomed to be the perfect queen. She's intelligent and brave and honorable. But she's yet to show any trace of the magic she'll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora's mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He'll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks-storm magic. And the people selling it? They're not Stormlings. They're storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there's a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage.
She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she's brave enough.

Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rawr! Holy crap, I love this book. 1. Roar is the greatest nickname ever for the name Aurora 2. Roar has the coolest powers ever 3. Thank you for not making the romance unnecessarily complicated and faking problems to keep them apart I had to send a tweet to the author to find it about if there's going to be a sequel cause uh...well I need it now. I have no patience. Gimme, gimme, gimme! It's not a new kind of fantasy but awesome none the less. My only real problem was the main male lead being rather excited about the main female's virginity and purity (and a little too over protective). That part of her made sense based on the characters background but he was a little too into it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Font Size Too Small I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if the font size wasn't so small and crowded. It was okay as a fantasy but there was so much romance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from utterly amazing!! I received this in a fairyloot box and really didn't know what to expect and I was unsure if I was going to like it when I started it but, it is absolutely fantastic! Cora Cormack really hit the mark with this story. I cannot wait for the next one! If I had to describe it in just a few words it would probably be Harlequin romance fantasy. I can't get enough of it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really enjoyed it! I was intrigued in the beginning, kind of found the middle to drag on and then LOVED the ending. The last 80 pages of ROAR made me so pumped I was finally getting into it and then Cora had to go and end it! Why! Really excited for book 2!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! Need The Next Book! I absolutely loved Roar!!! This being Cora's first YA book I believe she did an amazing job!! It was intense, amazing and wonderful that I wish I didn't finish so quickly. I already need the next book with that ending!! I loved the concept of the book with the stormhearts, the characters and the world that was created it will grab your attention from the beginning. So many feels and swoons that if you are in a fantasy mood you need to pick this book up! Our heroine in the book, Aurora is a princess and a stormling who will do anything to save her home. But she has no magic to help them and her people do not know this. The only way is to marry another powerful stormling family. It is right before the wedding that she discovers the magic market and storm hunters. She is interested in learning from them, especially one handsome hunter who is so swoony! There is also Cassius whose character I found very interesting and the next book will be good to see what is going to happen with him but I still don't like/trust him. While reading you follow Aurora's journey of her discovering who she is while on the road. Roar is captivating and it kept things intriguing and guessing to the end. There are so many questions that I need to know what's going to happen in the next book! Cora Carmack's book is a must read with its epic storm battles, action, romance and anyone who loves fantasy needs to pick up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Romance in a World of Unique Magic This book has been taking up almost all of my social media, and I have to say, it was worth the hype. Many readers have said that there is more romance than anything else throughout the book, and while I don't disagree, I have to say that it didn't deter me or take me away from the world or its complex magic. The story was fairly simple, with main character Aurora (aka Roar), escaping her destiny to forge her own path. She meets some charming rogues (Locke, OMG *heart-eyes*), and she focuses on growing stronger and becoming the woman she wants to be. Most of the time I like a complicated story, but this was an exception because I loved watching Roar grow. Locke is a fantastic counterpart, and I loved how their romance bloomed. Other characters like Nova are begging for their stories to be told, and while Cassius is a jerk, I wouldn't mind to watch his own story. The magic and world-building is fantastic and completely unique, especially at the end. There are a lot of open plot threads, and thank the gods for that, because I couldn't get enough of this book and can't wait for the next one. A must have for all YA fantasy/romance fans! You won't be disappointed!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Storm Fighting Romance *I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Indigo Books & Music Inc. in exchange for an honest review* #indigoemployee I am sad to say that I struggled to get through this novel. The beginning was especially difficult to read because of two extremely childish romances. I also had issues with our main character Rora. Not only did she selfishly risk the safety of her only friend, but she risked the lives of innocent citizens in order to achieve her goal. Additionally, her main love interest for most of the adventure, a man named Locke, was controlling and manipulative. On a high note, I really liked the storm hunting aspects that Carmack imagined. She uniquely compared storms to playful children, and wrote them as having human-like emotions. The cover art is absolutely beautiful and will definitely draw potential reader’s attention. This novel examines the depth of a parent’s grief over losing a child and the vulnerability that can be associated with such despair. It also examines feelings of inadequacy. Recommended for fans of The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken and The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst.
