As the daughter of a famed author, Isolde Ophelia Goodnight grew up on tales of brave knights and fair maidens.  She never doubted romance would be in her future, too.  The storybooks offered endless possibilities.

And as she grew older, Izzy crossed them off.  One by one by one.

  • Ugly duckling turned swan?
  • Abducted by handsome highwayman?
  • Rescued from drudgery by charming prince?

No, no, and . . . Heh.

Now Izzy’s given up yearning for romance. She’ll settle for a roof over her head.  What fairy tales are left over for an impoverished twenty-six year-old woman who’s never even been kissed?

This one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from romancing the reader; I needed this. I needed this book, this story, this love, these laughs and all the fun and silliness and swoons encapsulated in ROMANCING THE DUKE. I don't think it's as good as WHEN A SCOT TIES THE KNOT (yes, I read them out of order, but whatever, they are standalones), it's certainly not as consistently laugh out loud hilarious and ridiculous, but it's just so good. So sweet. So wonderful. The first in her Castles Ever After series introduces us a recently orphaned, penniless, and all but hopeless young woman, Isolde Goodnight, who is sent a notice explaining she has recently inherited a castle from a late godfather. Of course, when she arrives at the castle, it's very much in residence by a damaged Duke, Ransom of Rothbury, who has been struck blind by an incident. This book has shades of JANE EYRE, if Jane were to meet Rochester for the first time only after the fire. And actually this felt almost like a love letter to Brontë.. and then quickly became so much more. The plain girl and the blind man fall in love, of course, and their journey into romance is sweet and oh so sexy, full of banter and boners, but it's the supporting cast, the core of fairy tales reminiscent of a regency HARRY POTTER (well, maybe more a medieval-style Harry) written by Izzy's father that thread through the story, a fuzzy little ermine, and a group of what are basically LARPers who invade the castle, that make this story more than just a romance. They make it bizarre and hilarious and wonderful. I love the tongue in cheek commentary within the dialogue, I love how what begins as crude seduction later becomes desperate desire and I love that it takes a blind man to see what all others cannot. Dare has quickly become a favourite of mine. Sure, this is only my second read of hers but still. Her voice is so cheeky, so endearing. The characters so darling. The premise of the books, at least in this series, are not any different from your standard historical romance but she toys with the cliches, the tropes, and she both makes fun of it and has fun messing with your expectations. These books put a grin on your face and make you laugh. Like her bevy of damaged leading men, you just can't help but fall for them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Doubt Not I decided to purchase this book earlier today because I saw it was nominated for an award on Goodreads for 2014 being the best romance. I'm glad I did purchase it. I have read a couple of Miss Dares work here and there throughout the years and I can honestly say that this one is by far my favorite. I didn't think I would enjoy the story as much as I did by the time it was over and in fact the storyline itself left a lot to be desired for my typical favorites. However the style of writing and the characters really captured my attention. And the overall ability of the author to draw me in to this time and place, to make me feel like I was there with the characters experiencing each moment along with them made this story truly remarkable for me. I've read many stories of romance as that is my favorite genre and I can say that this one made me cry made me smile and made me want to read her next book in this new series right away. However after reading nonstop this wonderful book I think I will need to sleep a few hours before I purchased the next one, but doubt not .... I will.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great book!! When I first started reading this book I wasn't sure how much I would like it because typically I don't read books not set in the present time. After the first couple of chapters I couldn't put it down. The characters were great and the sex was good too!! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Engaging, Endearing, Doubt Not I've always enjoyed Tessa Dare's characters' humor and passion, the fact that they're not the typical blue stocking Ton. Her heroes and heroines are flawed, their courtship enjoyably awkward and their passionate nature boundless. This by far, is the best of them yet! I won't post a single detail about the love interests, it's far more delightful to discover it as they do. If you've read her Cove books, you know eccentricity is enticement enough to delve in page after enjoyable page. Doubt Not!
