Gossip Girl meets the Gilded Age in this delicious and compelling novel, the second in the New York Times bestselling series from author Anna Godbersen.

As old friends become rivals, Manhattan’s most dazzling socialites find their futures threatened by whispers from the past. In this delicious sequel to the New York Times bestselling The Luxe, nothing is more dangerous than a scandal...or more precious than a secret.

True love. False friends. Scandalous gossip. This is Manhattan, 1899.

After bidding good-bye to New York’s brightest star, Elizabeth Holland, rumors continue to fly about her untimely demise.

All eyes are on those closest to the dearly departed: her mischievous sister, Diana, now the family’s only hope for redemption; New York’s most notorious cad, Henry Schoonmaker, the flame Elizabeth never extinguished; the seductive Penelope Hayes, poised to claim all that her best friend left behind—including Henry; even Elizabeth’s scheming former maid, Lina Broud, who discovers that while money matters and breeding counts, gossip is the new currency.

“Mystery, romance, jealousy, betrayal, humor, and gorgeous, historically accurate details. I couldn’t put The Luxe down!” —Cecily von Ziegesar, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Gossip Girl series

Anna Godbersen was born in Berkeley, California, and educated at Barnard College. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, where she is at work on the sequel toThe Lucky Ones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Even better than the first book! Rumors is the second installment in Anna Godbersen’s young adult historical fiction series, Luxe. In the first novel we are introduced to New York’s most prominent socialites. Picking up a couple of months after the conclusion of book one, I was glad to learn that we follow the character Diana Holland. As the younger sister to the previous main character, I found her to be much more interesting than the elder Elizabeth. The Luxe series is often compared to the television show Gossip Girl. However instead of modern day, the first two books take place in late 1899. And instead of an online blog, newspaper columns like the “Gamesome Gallant” report all the latest scandals. Like in the first novel, I found that some of the character descriptions and fashion to be more modernized than they would have been at the time. I also found that some of the plot lines weren’t as fleshed out as they could have been. Despite these two grievances, I really enjoyed Rumors. High society and New York are two of my favourite topics to read about. Although I think the most enjoyable aspect of this book was the tone that was portrayed. It was a tone of pure snark that fit perfectly, not only with the gossip columns but the vain characteristics of the socialites. I would definitely recommend this series to fans of the young adult genre and I’m looking forward to continuing on with the third installment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Juicier and more intriguing !! (no spoilers) So after The Luxe, Rumors continued with the drama and secrecy going around in the 1899 Manhattan’s elite. First of all, although the disappearance of Elizabeth Holland is one of the main subjects of conversation for the moment, more important is the rumor about her still being alive somewhere. Is she alive and well and living the love life of her dreams with her handsome Will?? Who knows??? From a different point of view, how exciting it is to see the love triangle between Diana Holland, Henri Schoonmaker and Penelope Hayes… now THIS is probably the most intriguing and exciting event of the book. Penelope Hayes is ruthless and will stop at nothing before she gets what she wants and Diana Holland knows she has got to keep herself distant from any trouble. And from a third point of view, WHO is this new heiress Ms. Carolina Broud who’s getting quite a lot of attention??? All of these questions will be answered in Rumors; a fast read and, in my opinion, a more exciting book than its predecessor, the Luxe. But just so you know (a little warning) you should have book n° 3 (Envy) ready at hand. The ending of Rumors will leave you with your mouth open and wanting more! I’m really looking forward to reading Envy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it This is the second book to The Luxe series and it was just as good as the first. The romance, gossip and betrayal continues. The ending frustrated me but in a good way because now I’m looking forward to reading the third book to find out what happens. I highly recommend The Luxe series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Definitely an improvement from 'The Luxe' After reading 'The Luxe' and being somewhat disappointed, this was a pleasant surprise. The action has heated up and moves more quickly, and all of the characters become more devious, passionate, calculating and loving in their own rights. The plots for each individual tangle themselves hopelessly with those of their friends and enemies, and at the conclusion of 'Rumors,' it seems that a truly happy ending is nearly impossible. However, a glitter of hope remains... read 'Envy' for the conclusion!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Exceptional" Speak about secretive and scandelous! This book was a and exceptional addition to the The Luxe! Penelope Hayes has only one thing on her mind, Henry Schoonmaker. she will stop at nothing to make sure he is hers. Henry only has one thing on his mind, Diana Holland. He is compassionately and totally in love with her and she returns his feelings. But this relationship can not be due to the recent "death" of Henry's fiance Elizabeth Holland, Diana's sister. Elizabeth comes to realize that her family is in trouble and she must return with her soulmate Will. This book was unbelievable. I can not wait until the next one comes out!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! This book was great! Although I wish Will wouldnt have been killed but.... Overall it was extremely well written, contained historical facts (like dress detail) without being dull and boring. The romance between Henry and Diana was good and it so sucks that he was forced to marry Penelope because the stupid main told Lina and Lina is so desperate for money she sold the information to Penelope who is so desperate for Henry to love her she forced him to marry her! I cant wait for the third book to come out. Envy comes out January 27 ( I think) 2009.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The first was good but the second is awesome I very love the first and I was impatient to read Rumors. I was not disappointed. The magic recipe for doing a good book is here. I wasn't able to put down the book. It is a very good book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intriguing! I was a big fan of the first novel in this series, 'The Luxe,' and I absolutely loved Rumors as well! I couldn't put this book down because I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. It continues to follow Elizabeth and Diana Holland, as well as Lina Broud, as they struggle to live their new lives after the traumatic and exciting events of the first book. However, the ending was very shocking, and was the absolute opposite of what I thought would happen when I was reading the middle of the book. If you love 'The Luxe,' romance, or beautifully written books set in the past, then you should read 'Rumours!' If you love this series, then I strongly recommend you read the 'A Great and Terrible Beauty' trilogy.
