Game of Thrones fans will love the New York Times bestselling Abhorsen series. Sabriel, the first installment in the trilogy, launched critically acclaimed author Garth Nix onto the fantasy scene as a rising star.

Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. . . .

Garth Nix was born in 1963 in Melbourne, Australia. A full-time writer since 2001, he has worked as a literary agent, marketing consultant, book editor, book publicist, book sales representative, bookseller, and part-time soldier in the Australian Army Reserve. Garth's books include the award-winning fantasy novelsSabriel,Lirael, andAb...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't Put It Down I tore through this book in 2 or 3 days, it was so difficult to tear my eyes from it. Near the middle I knew I needed it to continue; I looked up if there were any sequels and made plans to go out asap to get my hands on them. Excellent world, characters, plot, story.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sabriel An interesting book that just wasn't my cup of tea. The book had you jump right into the quest without explaining a whole lot. How does magic work in this world? Wait, is this world similar to a present-day Earth? Lots of questions in the beginning. Necromancy is also a side of magic that doesn't really appeal to me, but it's refreshing to see it used in different ways.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great YA Fantasy I love Garth Nix as an author; he writes great believable characters and his world is easy to get immersed in. Sabriel is my favourite novel from the Abhorsen series, I love her as a character and the story is so exciting and fun to read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I loved Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series, so I had high expectations reading this book. I was not at all disappointed, it is a very fun read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite book in the series! If you’re looking for a cool fantasy book with interesting world building and a strong female protagonist, this is definitely the read for you! I loved Sabriel so much that I ended up buying the rest of the books in the Old Kingdom series, and am loving every bit of it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish I Found This Sooner I'm so happy I found this. One of the best book series I've ever stumbled across. It's hard for male authors to capture the essence of a female heroine and Nix absolutely nails it. The supporting characters are great, the adventure is thrilling, and I found the action to be non-stop since the very first page. I absolutely loved this!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Slow I was expecting great things due to the reviews but I found it slow and boring until the end. Last few chapters were good but slow until then. Still an ok read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! An ex recommended this series to me and at first I was hesitant because 1) I've never heard of this author and 2) the description didn't sound all that interesting at first glance. I decided to give it a chance for his sake and I was pleasantly surprised. I was drawn into this new world and couldn't put the book down #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Dark, Dangerous, and Thrilling With danger at every turn, Garth Nix submerges his readers into a world filled with Necromancers and their walking dead slaves. I highly recommend this book to anyone, no matter what age! There is nothing more enthralling than reading one of Nix's books!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sabriel Is a Great Character I read this series when I was in Grade 8 (13 or so) and lent it out to so many people I received my copy back ripped in half nearest the end. I love the Old Kingdom and all it's characters. Garth Nix recently released Book 5 (Goldenhand) and at 29, I was not disappointed. Definitely a series to try out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant and Beautiful Nix really knows how to spin a tale. Still one of my fav books to read, even now. Sabriel helps the dead pass on to the next world, but the one she's living in right now isn't entirely right either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Foundational This book was one that i could sink into completely. The world is vivid and fascinating, and the main character was wonderful. I read it originally when I was in elementary school, and read it again as an adult; I still enjoy it just as much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful Fantasy Series This book is a great start to a great series. The world is fascinating and the magic is interesting, and with great characters and an important goal to reach this book The Abhorsen is an interesting character, and it was great seeing Sabriel learn how to truly become one. Mogget was a great character, as well. Touchstone was also an interesting character to follow, and although his guilt was annoying at times, his redeeming qualities did make up for it. However, this combination of characters allowed for a great read and the adventure was all the more enjoyable because of the dynamics between them. The ending was great as well (both the last chapter and the epilogue), providing a beautiful finish to a great story. While it isn't necessary to read this book before the other two (as I had the first time around), it does provide interesting back story for the following books. More things are explained here than in the other books, and the importance of the Abhorsen is shown more so, as well. This series is definitely worth reading - if not for the fantasy setting and magic system, then for the characters who are worth caring for. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Dark Fantasy I bought this book when it was first published in 1995 and so far, have needed to replace it twice--I keep reading it so many times! The characters are fantastic and caught up in a dark fantasy story which makes it impossible to put down. It's equal parts humourous and harrowing--an absolute favourite!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A favourite Sabriel is one of my top favourite books of all time. The Old Kingdom sounds like an amazing place though brought with the Dean who can't seem to stay dead and Free Magic which runs amuck. Sabres walks away from the non-magic Ancelstierre and bravely walks over the wall to embrace her destiny and fight off the approaching evil. If you love fantasy with a darker theme I highly recommend this book and the others in the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Discovered a wonderfully new favorite! Originally I rented this as an e-book from the library. The writing and story was so beautiful that I had to immediately rush out to Chapters and buy this book (And the rest of the series all in one shot). It is a new favorite and I look forward to re-reading it in paperback to savor ever word. Sabriel, the daughter of a necromancer, is learning about herself and comes across many intriguing characters - Moggat is my favorite. A must read and wished I had discovered it earlier. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unusual and frightening This book has a lot going for it, but what makes it really unusual is the possibility of a modern land cut off from an ancient, magical land with only a wall, and what happens when they collide.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A book that sticks with you I read this book four years ago while traveling in Europe. I had started it before I left and bought the second book in the series to bring with me as well. To this day I can still feel the rush of excitement as I tore through page after page with an insatiable appetite. This incredibly work of fantasy will draw you in like a black hole and keep you there forever. The series was so good that by 2/3s of the way through the trip I was finished the first two and went to great lengths to find an English bookstore in Paris to get the third one. It was worth every Euro.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sabriel by Garth Nix -- Growing up outside the wall of the Old Kingdom, living the life of a student, Sabriel is whisked off her feet by the news that her father is trapped somewhere in Death. Using all that her father has taught her about necromancy and sending dead spirits to rest – Sabriel travels into the depths of the Old Kingdom to rescue her father and to make sure that the dead are not freed from their bindings. Pursued by evil spirits and taking many crash landings on the way, Sabriel has to face one of the Greater Dead (possibly the greatest) and use all that she has learned from her father to defeat it. But can she do it without using Astarael – the Sorrowful – which when rung would make all who hurt slip into death. -- This book didn’t start slow at all, and that made me happy. It wasted no time in the beginning, and went right to making you form in your mind what the hell was going on with the setting. It has magic and technology mixed together, and the way that the author eased you into the world that Sabriel lived in was perfectly done. I enjoyed this book very very much. The one thing that I would say needs some work is some character issues. I know that in Nix’s writing style character’s personalities are all very simple, but still. I think that he could work on the main character being a little more interesting. She doesn’t really have personality traits and seems kind of neutral about everything. I just wish that there would be something else that made her unique, besides being full of courage just like every other protagonist in fiction books. The setting was wonderful, I loved the time and the world that Sabriel lived in. This is a great book, and I recommend it. Here is Garth Nix’s website. I give this one a steady 4 out of 5. (The pictures with the stars are on my other computer, Sorry!) Later Cheese Graters, MRR

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! I first read this book five years ago after my mom's friend recommended it to my brother and me. It is a great start to one of the best series I have ever read. It is amazingly clever. Keep in mind that it is written in a more mature manner than the Seventh Tower series(if any of you are young), so make sure you keep that in mind. The entire series is Garth Nix at his best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding This book, and the entire series, are so vastly different from anything else I have ever read. The world that Nix creates is so vivid, and creative. You can definetly get lost in these novels. The magic that is in this book is very different from other author's perspectives, which enhances the amazing qualities of the writing. This book only starts something that is amazing - a trilogy that still sends shivers up my spine, after having read it many, many times over the last 7 or 8 years. Highly recommend to teens and adults who like fantasy, magic and adventure novels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sabriel Sabriel is an incredible book. I had been meaning to buy it for about a year and finally ended up getting it for my birthday. It's a wonderful, original fantasy, and I can't wait to read the sequel, Lireal.
Date published: 2003-10-11
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome On my frequent visits to Chapters this book always caught my eye. I finally purchased it and loved every minute I spent reading it. Garth Nix creates a world parallel to one similar to our own just before WWI, this world is full of horrors and great magics. These two very different worlds are seperated by only a boarder. His discriptions are wonderful and pull you right into the location and the characters. I ate up Lirael the sequel to Sabriel and I am impatiently waiting the arrival of the third book, Abhorsen, in paperback.
Date published: 2003-08-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from --A MUST READ-- This book is so undercredited. This book is far better than the Harry Potter series (not to say that they're bad). Harry Potter is child's play compared to Sabriel, Lirael and finally, the last book, The Abhorsen. I wish there were more. I've read the trilogy over and over again and frankly, I'm not completely satisfied because the books were so good I just wish they never stopped coming!
Date published: 2003-07-02
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Truly Magical This book kept me in suspense straight from the first page. the setting of the story is so realistic i feel this could actually be a real place somewhere out there... its imaginative, funny and a really great read. ive read the sequel and its even better...can't wait for the next one! way to go Nix!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant! I first read Nix's Shade Children, and was not particularly enchanted by that story. However, I'm extremely thankful that I did give Sabriel a chance, despite my original misgivings. The book was incredible. It pulled me in immediately, and didn't let go until the end. I was exhilarated by the depth and beauty that went into the description of the story, while at the same time retaining a deceptive level of elegant simplicity. I've bought the book, and I intend to buy the rest of the trilogy as soon as possible. This novel is definitely worth your time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind Blowing Novel This book is absolutely amazing. It's the first that I've read by Garth Nix, and it has made me into a huge fan. The entire book; the writing, the plot, and all the characters are mesmerizing. The descriptions are breath taking; when you are reading this book, you are right there in the scene. It is just so vivid. This is a great book for any age, and even for those who are reluctant readers. The only book I've read that could rival it is the sequel, 'Lireal'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Enchanting Masterpiece The story of sabriel lets your imagination run wild and free, even the person sitting right next to you could have a completely different image of what the characters, locations, and situations look like. Yet the story line pulls you along in one general direction of an exciting adventure. Even if your not into fantasy, this book will enchant you, a definitely must-read for all. I couldn't stop turning the pages to read on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Fantasy Sabriel is a great, original book about a girl from Ancelstierre, the safe side of the wall, who must journey to the Old Kingdom, the other side to save her father. Sabriel's father is the Abhorsen, a person who kills the dead who walk among people. This book is hard to understand at first but once you get reading, you get swept up in the events. I recommend this for girls and boys ages 12 - 15. I also recommend Shade's Children by the same author.

Editorial Reviews

“Sabriel is a winner, a fantasy that reads like realism. Here is a world with the same solidity and four dimensional authority as our own, created with invention, clarity, and intelligence. I congratulate Garth Nix. And I look forward to reading his next piece of work.”
