Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such a strong start One of the best graphic novel series out there, the first few volumes are close to perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Comic, Recommended! Saga is a great comic, it avoids weighing itself down explaining the setting and instead explores characters and the story they find themselves involved in. The cast is full of interesting characters and the books themselves are beautifully illustrated. I would recommend the hardcover books rather than the volumes, but only if you are okay with being a little bit behind the curve: the books collect multiple volumes, which means they come out later. These paperback volumes are a good medium between subscribing to the comic prints and waiting for the hardcover releases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A series worth investing in I stumbled upon this series through a friend and immediately got addicted. Very original story and great visuals!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting story but rated R graphics I enjoyed the story so far and the little family is adorable. The graphics are so cool but too rated R. I'm OK with that but I was afraid one of my kids would find it. It would be like them finding pornography that looks like a comic. I’m interested to see where the story goes but I’m not rushing out to get the next one just yet.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Give it a try The story itself is interesting and I became investing in knowing what happens to the main characters enough to continue with the series, which for me is very important, but also easy to do as I get invested in characters pretty easily. The world building is better than I was expecting, and I wasn't overloaded with names and places, making the story easy to follow, however, I still can't remember any names off the top of my head (main character names included). There was a bit too much sexual content than I prefer in a story or was expecting. The narration in the story is something more unique, which adds a nice element to the story. Plot-wise, I like the almost "Romeo and Juliet" vibes going on and the war element was introduced well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Graphic Novel of The Century, I Swear Loved this a lot. The humour was witty and perfectly timed, the art absolutely stunning, and the storyline incredibly intriguing. The world Vaughan crafted is wonderfully complex and illustated beautifully by Staples. It took less than a page to become completely invested in the series, and I'm still just as invested eight volumes later. It has an appeal to everyone, whether you're into romance, family dynamics, action, comedy, politics. Strongly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book I received this as a gift from a friend, and didn't read it for a while, once I finally got around to reading it, I was hooked and got caught up on the 50 or so issues that are out now, it's one of the best comics going, and always has great writing, storytelling and artwork.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very interesting The book flows well and has some very cool characters that you want to learn more about. It's like watching star wars for the first time. U want to learn the back story on every character. It also has a guardians of the galaxy typer theme. Rated R version though. Wouldn't recommend this one to a younger audience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic story and art! The art had me chomping at the bit to start buying this series from the moment I first laid eyes on it and I couldn't wait for my budget to allow me the splurge. Once I finally was able to start reading it, I was immediately blown away! The characters are endearing and realistically developed and the world is complex and extremely well built. The mix of sci-fi and fantasy is extremely well done by Vaughan and each new installment has me chomping at the bit for the next!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mixed media at its finest! The artistry of the gripping and rich plot as well as the stunning illustrations make this series a truly beautiful experience. I did not anticipate being so enthralled by the characters, but they are stunningly complex and often fascinatingly troubled. This series is a standout in its genre.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favourite graphic novel series! I do like a good graphic novel break, and I don't normally read sci-fi style stories, so figured that this would be a nice fresh change for me. I'm very relieved to say that this graphic novel did not disappoint, it was wonderful!

Date published: 2017-09-16
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved! I rarely ever read graphic novels. In all honesty, I can't remember the last one I have read because it has been years. The reason that I decided to give Saga a chance is because people are RAVING about it. The positive reviews are coming from people who typically love graphic novels in addition to those who are not as active within the genre. I loved everything about this first installment. It was hilarious from the first page (first line even) and had me laughing throughout. As well, it was action packed and I found it difficult to put down. I read it in one sitting and it was a very, very quick read. Almost too quick but again, I couldn't put it down! It's also extremely beautiful with the illustrations being extremely well done (fair warning for adult content though) and the colours are vivid and bright. Immediately after I finished reading this volume, I ordered the next few volumes and I can't wait to continue reading to see where the story goes! So glad I decided to give this book (and genre) a chance because I loved it! Definitely recommend for those who like comedy, sci-fi, and adventure!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An instant favourite Right from page one I knew I would fall in love with this series. The art and storytelling are absolutely incredibly. The art is what made me buy it in the first place. The characters all feel so real, and all characters, good guys and villains alike, have their flaws and redeeming qualities. I can't recommend this series enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from hella sexy and fun I've stayed away from graphic novels for a couple of years until someone persuaded me to give Saga a try. And I loved it. It's fun and sexy and cheeky and emotional. And now I've read all 7 that are out, and also started exploring other recent graphic-novel favorites.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Graphic Novel I've Read?? Its been a while since I read the first book, but only because I've been reading all of the other books in this series. I can't recommend this enough. It's got beautiful art in full color, hilarious dialogue, interesting and wildly diverse characters, sex positivity (nudity, as a warning), and its all set in a crazy space universe. But at the core of this story is compassion. It's about family and holding fast to love in the face of adversity. Would recommend to anyone who loves stories with a heart (and giant green cats that talk). #indigostaff

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down I'm usually apprehensive about anything called "sweeping" and "epic" because I can't be bothered to learn volumes of background info for a story I may not even like. But Saga doles out the details at the perfect pace, just when you need them, and lets the story grow and evolve at it's own pace. And it's an engrossing story! You'll fall in love with the characters right away and not be able to look away.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from You were all right. I'm late to the game, but Saga lived up to all the hype from my friends. I've whipped through the available issues, and am now waiting with limited patience to read what happens next. Love the art and the character design, and I love that Alana and Marco are portrayed as young people figuring out what they want in the world (and not always getting it right).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wow Saga is touted to be an amazing graphic novel series, so I decided to finally get with the rest of the world Saga Vol 1 and start reading it. I have to say I’m impressed; it is quite possibly the most creative, and imaginative story that I have seen in a while. It is stunning, as well as a little jarring. Without knowing what to expect it is a little shocking to crack the cover and the first thing one sees is a couple of ‘aliens’ with televisions for heads, having sex. And that’s probably the most normal thing that readers will see in this volume. There is a wide range of aliens, planets and species; one can compare the world to something the size of Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, or The Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch. The fantasy and sci-fi genre is something that always blows my mind with the level of creativity. Saga is no different.
Date published: 2016-11-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from New favourite With Y: the Last man being one of my all time favourite graphic novel series, I couldn't pass up picking up a copy of Saga: volume one and I'm glad I did. It takes the classic Romeo and Juliet story but re-imagines it as two soldiers from opposite sides of a intergalactic war who have just started a family together. Naturally, neither side of the war is happy with this and the new family immediately finds themselves the target of both armies and a few freelance bounty hunters. The design and artwork of the different alien races is imaginative, fantastic and in some cases, a little disturbing but overall it's easy to get sucked in. The aliens are great and so far there seems to be a mix of technology and magical based cultures that can appeal to the scifi and the fantasy fan alike. Finally, the writing and dialogue is reminiscent of Y: the last man so if you enjoyed that series, you'll likely enjoy this one as well.

Date published: 2016-11-08
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best comic series you will ever read! It seems as though everyone on this planet has read or talked about Saga by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. Almost every single booktuber, every single person I’m friends with on Goodreads and every single one of my comic book / graphic novel loving friends has talked about Saga and every single person has given it an amazing review. I knew it was something that I needed to pick up and read ASAP, but every time I made a trip over to my local book store I just never felt like reading it right at that moment. Recently though, I decided TODAY IS THE DAY and I finally picked up my copy of Saga Volume 1 and I now regret pushing it back for this long. This was my first experience with a graphic novel by Brian K. Vaughan and also my first experience with art by Fiona Staples…and I hope it won’t be my last! Saga has been extremely hyped up with the amount of people who swear by it and love it. The danger in that is that sometimes things can get a little over-hyped which causes me to have extremely high expectations. I usually try to go into new novels blindly without researching on the thoughts of other reviewers, but it was literally impossible to avoid hearing about everyone’s love for this graphic novel series. I am so happy to say that Saga volume one lived up to all of my expectations. Saga tells the story of two soldiers, Alana and Marko, who are on opposite sides of a long-time war and eventually end up falling in love and running off together. Obviously, this sounds very Romeo and Juliet, but Romeo and Juliet didn’t have a baby to worry about! What I love about the way this story is written is that parts of it are told by Hazel, Alana and Marko’s baby daughter, sometime in the future after the present events that are happening currently. Saga gives a new and exciting approach to a very standard and typical story arch. The writing is funny, crude and smart and very well done. Apart from the creative and unique take on the standard forbidden love story line, Saga contains some of the most unique creature concepts I have ever seen. There are no other alien-like beings like the ones that exist within Saga that I have ever seen before. Not to mention how beautifully drawn they are. Fiona Staples is an amazing artist and she also happens to be Canadian…BONUS! The detail, colouring and everything else about the art within Saga is just simply amazing! Each of the main characters are fantastic and so creatively different from one another. Marko and Alana make a great pair, and the added frustration of having a new born baby while also trying to outrun members of each of their own armies makes for some great comic relief. On top of being on the run from those they used to work with, there are also two bounty hunters set to kill them as well as, one of the most unique takes on an alien/creature in my opinion, Prince Robot IV…a man with a computer/tv screen for a head? I mean come on, so weirdly creative it’s awesome! Saga was everything I hoped it would be and then some. I highly recommend getting your hands on this graphic novel series! I can’t wait to continue reading (I just picked up volumes 2 & 3) and see just how much more creative this story can get!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from THE ART! THE STORY! You can tell a lot of heart was put into this novel. I don't read too many graphic novels but the art immediately got my attention and then I began to read. The first page got me - BIG TIME and when you read it you'll know what I'm talking about. I definitely cared about the characters quickly especially after that first scene. This came highly recommended and according to the sellers my only regret after purchasing this would be that I didn't get volume 2 and 3 right away. True- so true. For those of you who don't want to read a cutesy, flowery story with vapid characters but crave grit, passion, and amazing visuals Saga MUST have a spot in your library.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a saga! I'm speechless at just how brilliant Saga is. Actually, as the Lying Cat will say, "Lying." I texted my friend this as I embarked on my own Saga saga: "I had to share it with someone. FRIGGIN LOVIN SAGA!" It revolves around Marko and Alana as star-crossed lovers from rival races of horns and wings, in pursuit by their own people and hired help as they grapple with the harsh realities of war and the challenges as young parents to a newborn. A gripping plot that unfolds organically; an imaginative world melding fantasy and science fiction like no other; unique characters that make you sigh, laugh, and grow with them; a conscious narrative voice that is Hazel, daughter to our Romeo

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An epic Sci-Fi Opera/Fantasy series I bought this the moment I saw the art. The world Vaughan has created is rich, three dimensional, and edgy. This graphic novel is frequently described as "A Game of Thrones crossed with Star Wars" and it's not far off. The plot develops quickly, a bit too quickly in my opinion. I appreciate a bit of down time in the graphic novels I read - it gives the characters a chance to become introspective, and allows you to really get in their head and get attached to them. I do resonate with the characters, but I feel that the plots pace is somewhat detrimental to the work. Over all, Fiona Staples does a great job with the art and Vaughan has created an unrivaled world. Together, the two really help each other shine. The originality of every character, planet, etc is unparalleled.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Reason for Reading: I'm finding myself more pulled towards sci-fi than fantasy in my graphic novel reading and this sounded both fresh and involved. Love, love, love this book. An incredible story. One that is intricate, involves many levels, plots, characters and yet it all centres around the two main characters, an interspecies couple who has wed and born a child together. Their species have been at war with each other for what may as well have been forever and yet these two are unique examples of "people" not defined by species alone. Taking the race card one step further into species we see the same old bigotry being played out on a grander scheme as one species believes it is of an higher order than an other. What I particularly love at this point is how incredibly life affirming the context is. Having children is not exactly something encourage in this society, especially girls, but this couple affirms their love by having a child and later on in the book another (different species) couple find out they are pregnant and the issue is brought up whether the husband is happy, and won't mind even if it is a girl. He responds positively. The sex trade involving children is examined and the most unlikely of characters becomes a little girl's rescuer and advocate. I love the two main characters, they are both upright people and yet their personalities and morals are different, sometimes clashing. For warning, the book does include coarse language, not every page but frequent enough. I found it acceptable for the characters using it. There is full frontal nudity of both sexes, even though they aren't all "human", yet I was pleased that these scenes were at least between married couples. The art is stupendous. This is my first introduction to Fiona Staples but I will be watching for her name in future. Her drawings are realistic and she brings humanity to her non-human subjects as well as presenting simply stunning panels. Her character's facial expressions are able to say so much more than words ever could. A brilliant new series, that I am anxious to follow up with.
