Savage Season is the basis for the first season of the Sundance TV series Hap and Leonard

A rip-roaring, high-octane, Texas-sized thriller, featuring two friends, one vixen, a crew of washed-up radicals, loads of money, and bloody mayhem.

Together, they steer up more commotion than a fire storm. But that's just the way they like it. So when an ex-flame of Hap's returns promising a huge score. Hap lets Leonard in on the scam, and that's when things get interesting. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Savage Good Time The first book in the expansive and continuing adventures of Hap and Leonard. Sharply written and witty, with dialogue I could only describe as amazingly real & hilarious at times- Savage Season is (not to be obvious) the perfect entry point into the series. Our leads are essentially everymen, constantly down on their luck- yet always at the wrong place for the wrong scheme. This entry finds our dynamic duo delving into old history- which results in a mixed bag of things going (sometimes hilariously) wrong. Read this- it's whip smart, funny and extremely fun to venture into. Trust me on this, Hap and Leonard would.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious and brutal buddy adventure I reread this recently after watching the first season of the excellent tv series. Although I love the show it does miss out a bit on the humour that runs through all of Lansdale's works, no matter how dark the subject matter. Hap and Leonard are two guys working menial jobs in Texas, who happen to be life-long best friends. Hap is a white dude with a manipulative ex-wife, Leonard is a gay black man with (justifiable) anger-management issues. In this first book in the series they get roped in to a get-rich quick scheme that goes very wrong. I just love these two guys. They don't always agree but they always look out for each other. This sort of male friendship rarely gets depicted, and with Lansdale's understated humour it is always a delight. I can't recommend this enough. In fact, I have not yet read a Lansdale book I would not recommend. I am glad he is so prolific!
