Scaredy never sleeps --- sleep might mean bad dreams about dragons, ghosts, vampire bats and polka-dot monsters. Our wide-eyed hero has a plan: stay awake all night, every night. Between counting stars, playing cymbals and making scrapbooks, he does a good job of avoiding dreamland.

With exhaustion taking its toll, Scaredy comes face-to-face with an alarming horoscope prediction: All his dreams are about to come true!

He must prepare for the worst and his Bad Dream Action Plan includes a fire extinguisher to snuff out dragons and a fan to blast away ghosts. But when disaster strikes, will Scaredy survive this ordeal? Will he thank his lucky stars? Will he find sweet dreams?

Scaredy Squirrel at Night tackles a fear everyone --- and especially the young --- can relate to. It's a bedtime story to make light of kids' fear of the dark and a fable for our sleep-deprived society.

Customer Reviews of Scaredy Squirrel at Night

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great series funny series for little ones who are starting to read on their own

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A wonderful book from a true talent! Is anyone else afraid of dreaming? Specifically, of having bad dreams? I know I’ve woken up in a panic before: a cold sweat, heart pounding, not really knowing what exactly happened in my dream. But I still manage to get to sleep every night. Scaredy Squirrel, on the other hand, does not sleep. He’s so scared of having a bad dream that he has a plan for the night to keep himself awake. Since he’s so afraid of his dreams scaring him, when he sees his horoscope telling him that at midnight all his dreams will come true, Scaredy flips out and has to come up with a plan to keep the monsters from his dreams away! As usual, nothing goes according to plan, but in the end Scaredy Squirrel realizes the benefits of a good sleep–and learns that nothing will get him in the night. I love how the lessons in each of Melanie Watt’s Scaredy Squirrel series are simple, but unique in their teaching. Reading the stories is fun and they keep you thinking until well after you’ve finished the stories. Just think: if a neurotic little squirrel can learn to face his fears, surely we can all do the same. Of course, the best part in all of these books is the illustrations. They just keep getting better and better as the series goes on. Melanie Watt is a true talent and we’re sure lucky to have her up here in Canada.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun at night! Found out about Scaredy Squirrel through the Forest of Reading's Blue Spruce program. This book & Scaredy Squirrel are fabulous books to read aloud with very young children; they also have great appeal for those elementary students improving their reading skills - have seen 5th graders reading to kindergarden kids! And adding to the reading-readyness of both books another STAR! Melanie Watt is a Canadian author! And aside, ESL students in their 1st year also say that they enjoy reading these titles! Some of them check them out in order to read them to younger siblings. Any book which inspires reading earns 10 of 10 in my star ratings. I'll be picking up the 2 additional titles very soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scaredy always good for a chuckle In our house, these books are a favourite for the kids and adults alike. They work on both levels, as something that the kids love to read - because of the pictures and the cute story - and that parents love to tell - because of the pictures and the cute story. We have the whole series and have bought it as a gift. There's nothing like frightening unicorns!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Who doesn't adore squirrels? I completely admit that when I say I buy the Scaredy Squirrel books for my niece and nephew that the books actually live at my house. Scaredy is a delightful character, and in this book (the fourth in the series), he's afraid to go to sleep. And who isn't afraid of vampire bats, and monsters, and the other things that go bump in the night? With a deft display of traps and preventions, Scaredy gives it a shot, and the results are as fun as always. The added bonus of Melanie Watt being Canadian just makes it all the better.
