about

Scents of Memory is a passionate celebration of food and place. Souad Sharabani's recipes capture the simplicity and flavour of fresh and wholesome ingredients; her compelling stories, the power of love and generosity to transform even the humblest of meals into an unforgettable one.Souad's personal journey, from her childhood in the Middle East, to life in Europe as an illegal domestic worker, to some 30 years as a radio-documentary producer, has taken her to far-flung corners of the planet. In Scents of Memory, Souad brings together her many fascinating experiences-always associated with a memorable meal-in a series of funny, eclectic and poignant stories to accompany her appetizing, no-fuss recipes. With an uncanny ability, through her sense of scent and remembrance, to recreate the tastes of past meals she enjoyed, Souad shows in Scents of Memory that food really does connect us all.Readers will delight in the more than 100 recipes-rooted in Iraqi, Israeli, Malawian, Indian and Peruvian cuisines, among others-that Scents of Memory offers. You'll find favourites such as Tabbouleh and Ceviche, as well as refreshing new tastes such as Eggplant and Coriander Salad with Lemon Dressing, Sweet-and-Sour Apricot Stew, Rice with Cherries and Saffron, and Pomegranate Chicken. Presenting recipes for every stage of the meal, Souad also demonstrates how vegetable dishes can be the centrepiece. Mouth-watering, aromatic, healthy and simple to prepare-often one-pot-the recipes are easy on any cook's time and budget-each feeds four to six (or more!) people for less than ten dollars. These are recipes you'll return to again and again, to prepare, to savour, to share.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fascinating and delicious. I love this cookbook because it not only gives unusual ideas for cooking around the world, but it tells you about those places. It is intimate and the recipes are different - not what you find in cookbooks everyday. I loved the apricot stew on the cover - now a favourite with my family for a special treat. I have bought four cookbooks for friends and my adult children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delectable! Scents of Memory brings together recipes from the author’s Middle East background and travels. Some of the recipes are also a product of the author’s culinary background and her present life in Canada. Nowhere is this better illustrated than with the Marinated steak recipe, in which the spices give a whole new and mouthwatering take on steak. Not only are the recipes easy to make, they are healthy, economical and mostly low in fat and high in fibre. Many are one dish meals. Scents of memory is much more than just a cookbook. It is a delectable collection of stories from the many places around the world where the author has traveled, or lived. The layout on each page is enticing with a short story about the particular dish preceding each recipe. Often, the stories are highly entertaining. For example, in one, the author describes an altercation with an acquaintance about babganoush, which is hilarious. The stories reflect the many universal intersections between food, family and friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take this World Journey Suppose you have a small budget, you need to feed four people and you want a colourful, healthy, tasty, easy international recipe whose ingredients are available. This is the cookbook for you. Not only will you see clear concise recipes but you will share Sharabani's travels, meet fascinating people and hear their poignant and sometimes funny stories. Sharabani presents characters as diverse as her Chilean hosts and her Romanian mother-in-law, and locales as far apart as Malawi and Peru. I am thrilled with the stories and recipes for Sweet and Sour Apricot Stew, Mango Salad and Middle Eastern cookies, and many more. For example, an unforgettable story about a young Nepalese mother accompanies the recipe for Rice with Cherries and Saffron. You won't want to miss this book.
