It is intimate and the recipes are different - not what you find in cookbooks everyday. I loved the apricot stew on the cover - now a favourite with my family for a special treat. I have bought four cookbooks for friends and my adult children.

Some of the recipes are also a product of the author’s culinary background and her present life in Canada. Nowhere is this better illustrated than with the Marinated steak recipe, in which the spices give a whole new and mouthwatering take on steak. Not only are the recipes easy to make, they are healthy, economical and mostly low in fat and high in fibre. Many are one dish meals. Scents of memory is much more than just a cookbook. It is a delectable collection of stories from the many places around the world where the author has traveled, or lived. The layout on each page is enticing with a short story about the particular dish preceding each recipe. Often, the stories are highly entertaining. For example, in one, the author describes an altercation with an acquaintance about babganoush, which is hilarious. The stories reflect the many universal intersections between food, family and friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take this World Journey Suppose you have a small budget, you need to feed four people and you want a colourful, healthy, tasty, easy international recipe whose ingredients are available. This is the cookbook for you. Not only will you see clear concise recipes but you will share Sharabani's travels, meet fascinating people and hear their poignant and sometimes funny stories. Sharabani presents characters as diverse as her Chilean hosts and her Romanian mother-in-law, and locales as far apart as Malawi and Peru. I am thrilled with the stories and recipes for Sweet and Sour Apricot Stew, Mango Salad and Middle Eastern cookies, and many more. For example, an unforgettable story about a young Nepalese mother accompanies the recipe for Rice with Cherries and Saffron. You won't want to miss this book.
