Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very basic, could use improvement I found this book a bit of an odd one, for a text aimed at the lay-person. The writers went from oversimplifying certain concepts or skipping over them entirely to very complex concepts lacking any sort of explanation or even 'further reading' on a concept. A few chapters on the fundamental concepts of geology would have helped greatly. In the end, I found for all the information in it, I really didn't gain any understanding of geology. I found Smithsonian Earth did a much better job in covering earth science basics, including detailing the basics mineral and rock formation (even going on to various mineral and rock types). I believe this book could have been better written, and might suggest shopping around for another text on the subject.
