Placer mining is now more of an art than it was two or three decades ago. With improved machinery it is not necessary to get bed rock to insure recompense for the labor and capital invested in this kind of enterprise. Yet among operators and capitalists there is no little prejudice against this primitive industry. If, however, they would take the pains to consider and investigate they would find that three-fourths of the world's supply of gold has come from the placers. It is not a unique circumstance that fine gold is found oftentimes in the surface gravel of river bars while in the same place there is none on bed rock. It is a fine, thin flake or flour gold, and is more susceptible to the shifting action of the elements than the earthy material in which it is held. This is not astonishing when we understand that this gold is sometimes so fine as to float on water, and even hang suspended in air like a mist cloud. We have panned good colors in the Platte, in Cherry creek, and in Clear creek, close to Denver, where no gold was to be found at all on bed rock. This gold cannot, of course, be saved by ordinary methods of panning and sluicing. Necessity has evolved ideas in reference to methods by which this fine gold may be saved on a paying basis. the application of which has brought into operation a diversity of appliances for the purpose--some good, some bad, others indifferent--all constructed on the principle of gravitation. A work for the prospector would be incomplete without at least a brief notice of the different methods and appliances that have been used in placer mining operations since the discovery of gold up to this time.
