about

The fulfillment of your every desire... That’s the enticing yet dangerous promise of Sweet Candy, the new designer drug making the rounds through the community of club kids, neo-Nazis, drag queens, prostitutes and punks who populate the mean streets of Sweetville.

With its chewable hearts and candied lips threatening to forever transform the delicate social balance and the very lives of each and every member of the city’s underground, Sweet Candy is poised to ignite the tenuous powder keg that is life, love and lust in Sweetville.

But could the enigmatic back-alley surgeon Julius Kast and his partnership with a peculiar cult be the spark that lights the fuse once and for all? And how will their actions affect the life of a young woman named Trixie who is seeking salvation through transformation?

Take a remarkable journey that’s equal parts irreverent social commentary, revisionist dystopia, dark fantasy and horrifying reality when you travel to the unforgettable world of Sweetville’s counterculture where a host of sometimes dangerous, often deviant and always dark secrets are waiting to be revealed.

Such secrets refuse to be confined to Sweetville. But instead come home to you.
Changing everything.
Forever…

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! There's a story which comes along every so often that rocks your emotional core. Stripping you down until each piece of yourself is exposed, emotionally; opening up your heart and mind. Secrets of the Weird is Chad Stroup's debut novel and it blew me away! From the imaginative setting and characters to the unique love story hidden within. It's a story that's important not just to be told... but to be read as well. The setting takes place in a surreal, small town called Sweetville. And in this town, the kids are hooked on this hip new drug called sweet candy, (shaped like hearts & lips). In this town of Sweetness if you lack the ability of imagination and magic then I truly feel sorry for you. Within the population of this bizarre town we have Nazis, punks, cannibals, mutants. It reminds me of Median. Median is where the monsters live. A town inhabited by the outcasts, freaks and weirdos. My kind of town! Trixie is our protagonist of the story. A young transgender woman trying to make a life for herself on the streets of Sweetville. Determined to complete her transition, Trixie works by turning tricks to hopefully one day afford the surgery to become the woman she was meant to be. She meets Chris, a bass player in the punk band called Civilized Cannibals. It's with Chris that Trixie finds substance, love. But along the way things take a turn for the worse. Trixie is forced to make a decision that will change her forever. In a compelling way, Chad gives us Trixie's diary entries from her past as we learn about her struggles and the heartache she endured most of her life. I really enjoyed the diary entries. It brought us into her world, her perspective on how she–not only–viewed herself–but how she viewed the world around her. It was in these entries I fell in love with Trixie. There were moments I wanted to jump into the pages and give her the biggest hug and never let go. I had the chance to speak to Chad and to understand how he'd come to create such a lovable character like Trixie. Simply. A ton of research. Hours and hours of studying and learning different elements to help mold his character. The result speaks volume when you're brought into her world. Feel what she feels. See what she sees. It's the core of this story but the other characters, I tell you, don't fall short at all. Each one is cared for, thought out; unique and fun to read. Secrets of the Weird is mesmerizing to the point, and I promise you, you won't be able to put the book down; it's that damn good! I couldn't put it down. I was captivated by Trixie and the world Chad created around her. Brilliant! Wondrous! Fantastic! These are words that barely scratch the surface on how I feel about this book. Those are words that best described my deep admiration for this book. The styling of this book is a masterpiece.
