A beloved and internationally bestselling author’s contemporary retelling of Jane Austen’s classic novel of love, money and two very different sisters

When their father unexpectedly dies, the three Dashwood girls—Elinor, Marianne and Margaret—must face the harsh reality of a life where they no longer have the home or the financial security that they have always taken for granted. As they come to terms with life without the comforts of either their country house or an inheritance, Elinor, a sensible architecture student, and Marianne, a passionate, musical free spirit, are also confronted by a world where their choices are abruptly limited by their new and alarming circumstances.

With her trademark insight and wit, Joanna Trollope has brought Austen’s characters and their story into the 21st century. In the timeless spirit of their creator, she casts a clever, gently satirical eye on Elinor and Marianne as they are forced to navigate the modern world and the search for love. The results are both heartbreaking and hilarious, but always, in the hands of consummate storyteller Trollope, hugely entertaining and achingly true to life. Reimagining Sense and Sensibility in a fresh and contemporary light, Trollope recasts this beloved coming-of-age story as a perfect tale for our times.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sense and sensibility This was probably one of the worst books I have read in years and I usually enjoy this author's work. It was a real chore to read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sense and sensibility The wonderful thing about adaptations and retellings is the possibilities the new author has for being creative with the source material. Unfortunately, Trollope's retelling of Sense and Sensibility is pretty much just that - a direct retelling. There wasn't enough creativity, and it left something wanting. There was very little chemistry with Elinor and Ferrars, or with Marianne and Brandon. I really wanted to LOVE this book, but instead I just liked it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sense and Sensibility A great read! Trollope has done it again -she captures the angst and trials of all her characters - from a late teen to her mother. Her character development allows you to "see" into their lives and become part of their everyday world.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just read the original I have read a few Joanna Trollope books and enjoyed them so when I saw this title I thought it was worth a try. It is part of The Austen Project which is pairing 6 best-selling authors with each of Jane Austen's novels. I haven't seen any other of the books and some are still not released so I have no comparison when it comes to other authors. I found the book disappointing overall. Much of the dialogue, set-ups, etc. were taken directly from the original story. Under any other circumstance other than The Austen Project, an author would have been accused of plagiarism. It was just too obviously a re-write with some cars, phones and MP3 players thrown in. Normally I find Trollope's work something to be savoured but this was shallow and trite. If the other books in the project are to be written along the same idea, I'm not sure why the project was bothered with. It doesn't allow for the development of truly unique story lines or even a change of character names. I can only recommend you read the original and if you prefer to imagine Margaret listening to her MP3 player in the treehouse, then do so. If you want to read Trollope, she has many fine original books to choose from. Enjoy them!

"Like a good kitchen chat, Joanna Trollope's novels dish out equal measures of reassuring warmth and sobering insight." - THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

"Her books are . . . readable without being trivial, accessible without being pat, psychologically astute without being labored." -WALL STREET JOURNAL
