about

What happens when life and ambition collide with betrayal and disease? Sharon's comfortable existence as a novelist, wife and mother to twin daughters is shattered by a cancer diagnosis, and by her husband's affair with a graduate student. The only relief in sight is a new writing project—an engrossing serialized novel based on the story of the 19th-century actress Nelly Ternan, the young mistress of the aging Charles Dickens. Chronicling this infamous affair, Sharon is forced to examine with new eyes the secrets and struggles at the heart of domestic life, as she strives to mend her own marriage and heal her body. This surprising and intricate novel shifts between Sharon's Toronto and Nelly's Victorian England in interwoven chapters, asking deep questions about what really makes up the story of a relationship and a life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from book club recommendation My book club just finished this book and we were enthralled as each of the stories unfolded and connected. The characters are multidimensional, the story is mesmerizing and Kate Taylor's writing is beautiful. An excellent read and a wonderful book worthy of exploration and discussion. I'm still thinking about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly entertaining, literary time-shifter Kate Taylor masterfully blends fact and fiction, past and present, romance and intrigue in this fast-paced and highly literate novel. Fans of Peter Ackryoyd will love this as Taylor draws on his biography of Charles Dickens, but Serial Monogamy also reminded me of Ackroyd’s startling time shifting fiction like Hawksmoor. Serial Monogamy is a great read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful book Kate Taylor does a great job of bringing perspective to relationships and providing an historical look at a real life affair of Charles Dickens. Interesting and intriguing. Really enjoyed reading it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great X-Mas gift I started reading this book in the store as I knew it had a Dickens theme and then bought it as an xmas gift. (But, of course, I read it myself first!!!) I loved the parallel stories and in particular found the Dickens' thread compelling. At first, I had a hard time getting into the character of Sharon, as she was not the most sympathetic character, but ultimately I started to love the counterbalance of her coping with her husband's affair and the Nelly/Dickens plot line. Fabulous plot twist at end (I won't reveal). Loved the book, would recommend and great Xmas gift (for adult readers, obvs!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 great stories, one really good novel! I enjoy contemporary fiction especially themes facing women today and I like historical fiction; Serial Monogamy delivers both! Fascinating storytelling of Dickens' and Sharon's life-story really made me feel and think. Serial Monogamy really drew me in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Intriguing characters The cast of characters stayed with me, and their lives seemed large and real beyond the bounds of the novel. Kate Taylor draws us into complex lives and nuanced, believable situations. Heartbreaking and yet full of hope, Serial Monogamy is a great read!

Editorial Reviews

National Bestseller"Serial Monogamy is gripping and entertaining; Kate Taylor plays an artful game here using two time periods―contemporary and Victorian―to provide the reader with illuminating insight into the way that couples can at times make each other miserable while also making each other happy. The book is a page-turner as well as a clever take on Charles Dickens, his wife, his mistress and the fine art of the serialized novel." ―Kate Pullinger, award-winning author of Landing Gear"The focus of the Toronto writer's deft third novel is marriage and fidelity. . . . Taylor is a smooth writer and her time shifts . . . are executed without a stumble." —Toronto Star"Compelling. . . . [Serial Monogamy] seduces the reader." —The Globe and MailPraise for A Man in Uniform: • "A rollicking novel . . . The book moves along at such an admirable clip that it's hard to believe it won't carry on without you if you dare put it down." --Toronto Star • "Taylor is an aficionado of belle époque France. [Her] twisting plot is rich in romance and disturbing in its implications about the fragility of human rights." --Elle Magazine • "An engrossing mystery that neatly bridges literary and popular fiction . . . Taylor deftly draws out the delicate balance between civil liberties and national security." --Chatelaine
