Excerpt: ... I JOH N III. 8.,--For this Purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the Works of the Devil. THESE Words, containing a short, and yet if duly considered a full, Account of the great End and Design of our Blessed Saviour's Manifejlation in the Flesh, may furnish us with Matter very proper to employ our Meditations at a Season particularly set apart for the devout Commemoration of this wonderful Event. With this View I have accordingly made Choice of them; and proposed to reduce what I had to offer thereupon, under the Four following Heads of Enquiry: I. Who is here meant by the Son of God, and what by His being?nanifejledf II. What II. What we are to understand as here meant by the Works of the Devil? III. How this Manifestation of the, Son of God is fitted to destroy these Works? And, IV. What Uses we are to make of the Doctrines that may occur under the foregoing Heads. The Two former of these Enquiries have already been considered at large. Under the First, I briefly suggested to You the Greatness of the Condescension of the Person here said to be manifested, and os His Love to us and all Mankind; I set before You some out os many Proofs, which the Scriptures furnish us with, of His true and essential Divinity, and also of His real and proper Humanity; of which last, to render His Condescension still more conspicuous, He was pleased to appear in the lowest Circumstances, and such as were most slenderly accommodated.
