From what has been already faid of the State of the Jews before Mo/es, it does not appear, either by the Purity of their Lives or the Soundnefs of their Knowledge, that they had any confiderable Advantage from any Prerogative antecedent to the Law. 'Tis True, they highly valued themfelves upon their Natural Defcent from Abraham; and expe&ed much Favour and Benefit from the Circumcifion, as being the very Stamp and Seal of the Covenant. Tho had the Circumcifion of itfelf been a fufficient Prefervative from Idolatry, or any good Security of the Favour of God, PC 83. God, the Edomites and the Ifmaelites and the Hagarens, and thofe othei4 forementioned Defcendants from the flock of Abraham according to the Fleflj, had had as good a Title to it, and had All been equally within the Covenant of Promife. Yet were they fo ftrongly pofleft of their Opinion of Circamcijion, that even thofe Jews who were afterwards Baptifed into the Chriftian Faith, tho' they had thereby lifted themfelves under a New Difpenfation, could yet fcarcely fhake it off.
