Therefore He puts you through the fire, that the rust being burnt off, you may come out a better and a brighter instrument. And therefore--I speak to Christians--affliction always stirs up a desire to work. If it do not, it is a very bad sign. And we know well, that the work for the kingdom, is the way to be great in the kingdom. But above all, it is because it unites us to the Lord Jesus Christ that " correction " makes us " great." There is nothing great before God but Christ; and every other thing is great before God, according as He sees it in Christ,--as it mingles with Christ,--as it is identified with Chiist. And all grief, where the Holy Spirit is, rivets to Christ. It makes Christ precious; there is nothing else precious in the whole world. It draws out the sweetness of Christ,--it becomes a badge of Christ,--it is an evidence of Christ in us,--it is Christ to us. And yet, only once more, let me take you a step higher, and let us read the same truth where it stands out in characters of light.
