Excerpt: ... SERMON II. Eomans xiii. 11. Now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The return of the season of Advent, admonishes us of the flight of another year. It is gone,--and with it all that it has witnessed in us, both of good and evil. It has not borne them into the land of oblivion. It has added another chapter to the history of our lives,--another page to the records of the judgment-day. It is natural, standing where we do, to wish to look back, and survey-the events of the past year, to sigh over its follies, to mourn over its sins, and to bless God for the good we have been permitted to achieve. Such retrospection is profitable. Rightly performed, it will enable us to walk more circumspectly for the time to come, and to gird up our minds with fresh strength and courage, for what remains of our journey. But natural and salutary as it is, to review the past, the mind is, perhaps, still more strongly inclined to rush forward, on the wings of curiosity and hope, from the point where one year ends and another begins, to the things that lie hidden in the future. Aud this exercise of the mind may be made even more profitable than retrospection. If imagination's airy wings are repressed, and our meditations on the future are guided and governed, not by the fancies of the carnal mind, but by the truth of God, the result will be in accordance with the sentiment of our text;--by the consideration of our future prospects, we shall be roused and quickened to attend to our present duties. To such exercise the Scriptures of the season invite us.
