about

"A brilliant debut, full of everything I love: a sparkling and fully realized heroine, an intricate and deadly system of magic, and a searing romance that kept me reading long into the night. Serpent & Dove is an absolute gem of a book." —Sarah J. Maas, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Court of Thorns and Roses series

Bound as one, to love, honor, or burn. Book one of a stunning fantasy duology, this tale of witchcraft and forbidden love is perfect for fans of Kendare Blake and Sara Holland.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation—marriage.

Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.

Set in a world of powerful women, dark magic, and off-the-charts romance, book one of this stunning fantasy duology will leave readers burning for more.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a fan of the book's writing style and pacing. This book gets two stars as I didn't dislike it enough not to finish it, however I will be returning this and not reading the sequel when it comes out. I was expecting the author to go into more detail explaining the environment/scenes that the characters were in, and even the characters themselves, more, however we barely got any tidbits of detail in each setting. "Oh they went to the market, oh they're in the tower." We aren't given much to visualize the setting at all. I don't think I knew what the characters even looked like until many chapters in, even then all I remember now is the guy has auburn hair. The magic is explained well but where I was expecting lush imagery that invoked ethereal, ancient magicks, instead what I got was a main character who lacks any form of vocal tact and just spouts off bratty, swearing conversation. (Which was not endearing as I'm sure the author was going for.) I had high hopes for this novel as the cover is so pretty and the concept of the book was neat however in the end its kind of a magic version of Twilight- just not a fan of the writing at all unfortunately.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Witchy Romance/Fantasy *I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Indigo Books & Music Inc. in exchange for an honest review* Serpent & Dove is centered upon a Witch Hunter named Reid who is forced into marrying a Witch named Lou. Reid has no idea that his new wife is a witch, but he can tell that she has dangerous secrets. Both main characters are so different. Lou is an inspiring thief who speaks her mind, defends her friends and follows her heart. Reid is a dedicated worker who is strong willed, driven and so innocent. This story line focuses more on romance than fantasy, which I would usually not enjoy. However, there was such chemistry that I really appreciated the progression of their relationship. The supporting characters were also wonderful, my favourite being the sassy Blood Witch Coco. Trigger warnings: cutting, abandonment, parental abuse and murder. Recommended for fans of Truthwitch by Susan Dennard.
