about

One thousand years ago, the great Kami Dragon was summoned to grant a single terrible wish—and the land of Iwagoto was plunged into an age of darkness and chaos.

Now, for whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers, a new wish will be granted. A new age is about to dawn.

Raised by monks in the isolated Silent Winds temple, Yumeko has trained all her life to hide her yokai nature. Half kitsune, half human, her skill with illusion is matched only by her penchant for mischief. Until the day her home is burned to the ground, her adoptive family is brutally slain and she is forced to flee for her life with the temple’s greatest treasure—one part of the ancient scroll.

There are many who would claim the dragon’s wish for their own. Kage Tatsumi, a mysterious samurai of the Shadow Clan, is one such hunter, under orders to retrieve the scroll…at any cost. Fate brings Kage and Yumeko together. With a promise to lead him to the scroll, an uneasy alliance is formed, offering Yumeko her best hope for survival. But he seeks what she has hidden away, and her deception could ultimately tear them both apart.

With an army of demons at her heels and the unlikeliest of allies at her side, Yumeko’s secrets are more than a matter of life or death. They are the key to the fate of the world itself.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good It was pretty interesting to read a novel based on Japanese tradition and the plot was pretty nice, too, having a nice blend of adventure and a hint of romance. Additionally, I really liked the mix of characters-- you had brave, spunky Yumeko to balance the seriousness of Kage, with Daisuke to provide some comic relief. I feel like a lot went on in the novel, but it allowed new characters to be introduced and build strength in them, as well. Pretty good read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from totally captivating read Yumeko has lived her life in the Silent Winds Temple with only the monks as family and teachers. She knows very little of the outside world. When the temple comes under violent attack she vows to follow the wishes of her master and deliver an ancient scroll to a hidden and seemingly mythical temple in a distant part of the county. As she begins her trek, she meets up with Kage Tatsumi who agrees to escort her. Unknown to Yumeko, Kage is not truly a samurai, rather a demon slayer intent on obtaining the very same scroll for his own clan. Yumeko has secrets of her own. She has simple fox magic as she is half kitsume and half human. Most handy in those unexpected situations that tend to occur with her. These two make most interesting travel companions. They both seek the same goal, though for very different reasons. Both reaching the conclusion that for now it is better if they work together while keeping their secrets hidden. I am eager to see if they can keep their detachment from each other. Author Julie Kagawa is a master at world building. She has incorporated enough real world similarities to make me accept this new world. I particularly like the kitsune and other spirits. I felt safe and comfortable with these non-human characters. Please write quickly Ms. Kagawa, I'm eager to read Soul of the Sword, Part 2 of Shadow of the Fox. I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Indigo Books & Music Inc., in exchange for an honest review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magical MUST READ This is currently my favourite book. I just finished it, and all I want to do is read the next book. It's absolutely fantastic, and I would argue one of the best of Julie Kagawa's stories so far. It's a breathtaking adventure filled with action, monsters, deception, magic, blossoming romance, lore... I really could go on! The story itself is exciting, with grand battles and trials around nearly every corner. The world is absolutely gorgeous and filled with all kinds of Japanese monsters and creatures. There were so many open storylines that I'm dying to see resolved, so many backstories I need to hear. The characters are stellar. I loved the side characters like Okame and Daisuke, but my full attention was on the main characters of Yumeko and Tatsumi. Both of them are strong on their own––with Yumeko's curiosity and determination, and Tatsumi's inner struggle––but together they are a force to be reckoned with. His moments defending her are almost as thrilling as her genuine kindness to him, no matter what he does. While I completely adore this book for everything it is, I would come back for their relationship alone, especially after that ending! I have so many questions and theories about this story and its mysteries, and I'm genuinely biting my nails in anticipation for what comes next. This group of unlikely heroes has a long journey ahead of them, and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Filled with Japanese lore I love reading fantasy novels and opened this one with glee. Within the first few pages, I was entranced by the Japanese lore that is intricately woven into Yumeko and Tatsumi's story. Even though I do not know much of Japanese culture and myths, my enjoyment of this story was not hampered. The unknown is subtly explained to me; and the cultural practices shown to me by the actions and words of the characters. While reading the first novel in this series, I grew to love the characters: the innocent Yumeko, the battle-hardened Tatsumi, the humorous Okame, the noble Daisuke. I thrilled at the battle scenes and smiled at a budding romance. The intrigues captured my interest, and the descriptions of the world described in the novel absorbed my imagination. I enjoyed reading Shadow of the Fox and was happy that I had chosen to read it over the weekend - I would have had difficulty putting it down to go to work! I look forward to reading the next installment in the series

Editorial Reviews

"Shadow of the Fox has just become one of my all time favorite fantasy novels! I'm in love with this book, its characters, its worldbuilding! Oni, giant centipedes, flesh eating ghosts, and terrifying half women/half spider things that will give me nightmares for weeks to come, this book is filled with terrifying Asian mythological creatures that make Medusa look like a mean grandma with a bad wig. Not to mention a lovable kitsune, a sexy demonslayer, and quite a few side characters that are larger than life and have completely wormed their way into my heart. I'm so invested in their lives and their quest and I cannot wait for the next installment of my new favorite series. In the meantime, I plan to re-read Shadow of the Fox again and again until I can be reunited with Yumeko and Tatsumi soon. So dear Julie, please write faster!" -Ellen Oh, author of the Prophecy and Spirit Hunters series"Kagawa (Inferno, 2018, etc.) uses elements of Japanese mythology and folklore to spin an epic yarn...readers will be drawn into the world of Kagawa's first Japan-based fantasy; with its engaging action scenes and the cliffhanger ending, they will look forward to the next volume.
