Gaby thought her life couldn't get more complicated.

She's almost used to the idea that she's not the teenage backpacker she thought she was. She can just about cope with being one of the Rephaim--a 139-year-old half-angel--whose memories have been stolen. She's even coming to grips with the fact that Jude, the brother she's mourned for a year, didn't die at all.

But now Rafa--sexy, infuriating Rafa--is being held, and hurt, by Gatekeeper demons. And Gaby has to get the bitterly divided Rephaim to work together, or Rafa has no chance at all.
Paula Weston lives in Brisbane, Australia, with her husband, Murray, and their pets--a retired greyhound and a moody cockatiel. She is a huge fan of Australian literature, fantasy/paranormal stories and Whedonverse comics, and is a mild TV addict. Shimmer is the third book in the Rephaim series. Find out more at

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So Much Drama! Another action-filled edition of this YA urban fantasy series, but once again, focused too much on the personal drama of the characters for me to feel the investment I wanted to. Again, it's not a bad series and not a bad book, and I especially enjoyed some of the dialogue and many of Jude's scenes. There were a lot of revelations, though only a couple of them really surprised me. I was also a little annoyed with the first half of the book where basically nothing was happening. It was literally just waiting around even though the characters didn't want to, and knew they couldn't. I didn't buy that the Outcasts wouldn't bolt straight for Rafa and Taya, or even form their own plan. At least there was more action and while I might complain about the constant interactions between the characters and their relationships when demons are LITERALLY AT THE DOOR, I did find the dialogue to be realistic and the emotions to be genuine. Plus, I know it was written as a cliffhanger, but the ending didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. It just came way too out of the blue. Having said all this though, I do want to see how it all wraps up and how much will collapse for the characters on the way to their happy ending.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic continuation The Rephaim series keeps getting better by each new book. This is the third book in this series and I honestly can say that Weston doesn't seem like she'll be slowing down. The plot twists and intertwined storylines and characters are just done so well that I can't help but obsess over this series even after I finished the book and also while waiting for the next one. This is not your typical angel story.. any preconceived opinions you have about YA angel books? throw them out because this series will shatter them for you. I am confident enough with this series to put out such a statement on my blog. This will be a spoiler free review of this third book in this series. However three books in and I can tell you I really don't want this series to end. The next book, Burn, is the last one and I personally don't want to think about what'll happen after I'm done. No more waiting for the next book, no more of Gaby, Rafa, and Jude.. and no more of the fantastic secondary characters and the witty banter between everyone. This book does not only have a very original angel paranormal plot line, but the characters are what make this series so memorable and addicting to me, as a reader. Gaby is one of the most authentically kick butt characters in YA I know.. she isn't kick butt because she's physically strong, or because she's a 'feminist' but she's kick butt because she's independent but isn't afraid to ask for help when she needs it. She's kick butt because she's smart, rational (most times), and puts her family and friends first. She's kick butt because she doesn't think sacrificing herself is the answer to everything (I'm looking at you dystopian female protagonists), and she is a girl who isn't afraid to be just that, a girl. I love her relationship with her brother Jude, and I love her relationship with Rafa (and boy do we get many entertaining scenes of those two during the series). The plot line is about the fallen angels, the offsprings of those fallen angels, and the need for redemption.. however it's not that dark or complicated. It honestly reads like a movie. There is never a dull moment when it came to the plot and I honestly can't recommend it enough because I have not read a series that had the complete package. This is the third book and I really like the pacing of the whole paranormal/fantasy plot line progression doesn't leave room for any boring parts or lull. I can't recommend this series (and this book) enough. Honestly all three books, Shadows, Haze, and Shimmer have been excellent.. I can't really tell you which I liked more because I enjoyed them all immensely. If you are looking for an older YA/NA paranormal addicting series? this is the one for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Addictive and Intoxicating Fantasy! "Shimmer" the third book in the Rephaim series which I won through Goodreads Giveaways revolves around the rescue of Rafa and Taya severely injured and held hostage by the Gatekeeper demons. With Nathaniel and the Council of Five vacillating about attacking the iron-room Gaby and Jude race against time to gather information and rally the Outcasts to wage their own offensive against the demon horde. In this plot Paula Weston explores not only the conflict between Nathaniel's loyal army of Rephaim and the Outcasts, the mystery surrounding the iron-room, but the problem of moles at Sanctuary supplying vital information over the years to the farm in Iowa. Gripping and intense the fighting not only escalates between the Rephaim and the Gatekeepers but with the ongoing internal strife inside the walls of the safe haven. The action never stops as Zarael and his band of demons grow bolder retaliating against Sanctuary, and making plans to destroy Pan Beach. Emotionally- intense Gaby struggles to control her feelings especially when evidence of the demons heartless brutality is shipped to Nathaniel. She looks to Jude for hope and encouragement, to twelve year old Dani for confirmation Rafa and Taya are still alive, and for help from Daniel to ensure her plan's successful. His decision and hesitation at her request ignites the plot as loyalty to Nathaniel begins to unravel and the relationship between Rephaim and Outcasts is tested. In the face of so much strife intensity builds as the confrontations between Gaby, Nathaniel and his Council get heated, past history and hidden secrets are exposed, and the Gatekeepers stir up strife. In an atmosphere of uncertainty and doubt in Nathaniel's conclave the plot moves quickly and smoothly to a shocking climax that begs for a fourth novel. With every new storyline the characters in this series continue to develop, their complexity and passion fueling the plot with high-energy and drama. Although stubborn, restless, and afraid for Rafa Gaby remains sensible, clever and resourceful in planning an attack against the Gatekeepers. Loyal and caring she refuses to leave Taya and Rafa scapegoats to the will of the demons and will do anything to protect her friends from Nathaniel's anger. In this plot sexy, hot-tempered and unpredictable Rafa afraid of dying in the iron-room will sacrifice even his life to protect Gaby. Enigmatic Nathaniel who founded Sanctuary proves to be untrustworthy and controlling, covering up secrets including his relationship with the Angel Garrison, his true motive for finding the Fallen, and the murder of the mothers of the Rephaim. The cast of unforgettable and tense personalities also includes: the irrepressible, snarky Mick; focused, responsible Jude; the deceptive instigator Mya; and the compliant but troubled Daisy. I loved how Paula Weston creates sharp edges in her characters' personalities as the story twists and turns and more questions arise. But it's Zarael, Bel and the demons that add a frightening chill as their power and strength never seems to diminish after a confrontation with the Rephaim. "Shimmer" the third intoxicating novel in an addictive series keeps you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last. I rate it highly and can't wait to read "Burn"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addictive & Thrilling It has not been an easy wait for the North American release of Paula Weston's Shimmer. After the thrilling events in Haze, and a shocking cliffhanger that left me reeling, who knew we'd have to wait over a year and a half for the third installment in the Rephaim series?! But Shimmer is finally here, and let me tell you, it was absolutely worth the wait. Addictive, heart racing, and thrilling at every turn, I loved the book! Picking up directly after Haze ended, Gaby is back at the Sanctuary in Italy... but without Rafa, who has been injured and taken captive by Zarael and his Gatekeeper demons in Ohio. An iron room in a farmhouse prevents anyone from shifting in or out to save Rafa and Taya, and there are simply too many demons there for the Outcasts to kill on their own. Gaby's only hope to rescue Rafa is through the support of Nathaniel and his followers at the Sanctuary—not an easy feat when the Rephaim have been divided for over a decade. Gaby's reintroduction to the paranormal world has not been an easy one, and it hardly gets any better in Shimmer. She may be reunited with Jude, her twin brother she thought was dead, but now she's lost Rafa, the one person she can implicitly trust to have her back. There's still so much she doesn't understand about her past, how she and Jude lost their memories, and what drove them apart all those years ago in the first place, but those answers will have to wait. Rafa needs her. And she won't let him down. I was really proud of Gaby in Shimmer. She's not really "Gabe" anymore, one of the Rephaim's fiercest fighters, but she can certainly hold her own in a fight now that her natural instincts and training are steadily returning. For now, the Outcasts and Rephaim at the Sanctuary must work together, but Nathaniel's secrets and refusal to take quick action threaten their uneasy alliance. Every hour that passes brings more uncertainty and fear for Rafa and Taya's fate, and Gaby is not the kind of girl who enjoys feeling helpless. And the ending! Did that really happen? That last sentence dropped a major bombshell on us with no warning! It was brilliant. Paula Weston sure knows how to blindside her readers... and leave them desperate for the next novel. The Rephaim series has been consistently action-packed and suspenseful, leaving you on the edge of your seat, and Shimmer is no exception. I'm so glad we only have to wait a few more months for Burn!
