Inspector Kurt Wallander's long-anticipated vacation plans are interrupted by two horrific deaths: the self-immolation of an unidentified young woman and the brutal murder of the former minister of justice. As the police struggle to piece together the few clues they have, the killer strikes again and again. What connection is there between a retired minister of justice, a successful art dealer, and a common petty thief? Why does the killer scalp his victims? And could there be some connection between the young woman's death and the murders?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this series I have loved the Kurt Wallander series so far, but this book is phenomenal. A great mystery in which author Henning Mankell slowly, and precisely reveals the killer's true identity and then frustrates you be revealing how Detective Wallander goes about searching for him, at times coming so close, only to get "sidetracked", and begin an investigation in another direction. I found myself wondering when Wallander was going to figure it all out knowing it was probably going to be an "A-Ha moment". Great action, a complex series of murders and a subtly intelligent detective in Wallander who deals with his demons while chasing a crazed killer. Loved this book
