Jack Potter puts computer cryptography to work for the highest bidder: sometimes for private corporations, sometimes for the government. Sometimes the work is legal; if not, Jack simply raises his price. But one day, Jack discovers something cloaked in the hiss of background radiation streaming past the Earth from deep space: a message from an alien civilization. One that's eager to do business with humanity -- and its representative.

Before he knows it, Jack has entered into a partnership that will open a Pandora's Box of potential profit and loss. The governments, the multinationals, and mysterious players more powerful still, all want a piece of the action -- and they're willing to kill, even wage war, to get it. Now Jack is entangled shifting web of deceit and intrigue in which no one, not even his closest friends, can be trusted. For Earth's cloak-and-dagger business practices are writ large in the heavens...and hostile takeovers are just as common across light years as they are across boardroom tables.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hard SF at its finest! This book still holds up very well. I wish there were more than just two books in this series.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Patrick The story line and plot were intriguing and the characters were diverse and interesting. However, Nylund goes into a lot of conceptual detail that at points is way too much. I found myself skipping multiple paragraphs waiting for him to get back to the story. If you are going to give it a read, be sure your thinking-cap is tightly secured.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Signal to Noise A truly top sci-fi book. Somewhat similar to Matrix, but better. One of the best futuristic environments. Highly believable and submerging. Pleases those interested in "new gadgets" and in "new social issues". Lot's of adventures and mental gymnastics. Highly recommend.

Editorial Reviews

"A fine adventure novel in the cyberpunk tradition. But it's what Potter discovers along the way that makes the novel so telling...A strong novel, not only for its biting social satire, but also for the compelling and fast-moving plot, and richly textured characters. We follow Potter through a kaleidoscope of fear, paranoia, betrayal, and finally desperate hope, as he tries to survive in a world more like our own than we might like to admit."
