about

The new novel from New York Times bestseller Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River and Shutter Island

“Lehane is the master of complex human characters thrust into suspenseful, page-turning situations.” —Gillian Flynn

Since We Fell follows Rachel Childs, a former journalist who, after an on-air mental breakdown, now lives as a virtual shut-in. In all other respects, however, she enjoys an ideal life with an ideal husband. Until a chance encounter on a rainy afternoon causes that ideal life to fray. As does Rachel’s marriage. As does Rachel herself. Sucked into a conspiracy thick with deception, violence, and possibly madness, Rachel must find the strength within herself to conquer unimaginable fears and mind-altering truths. By turns heart- breaking, suspenseful, romantic, and sophisticated, Since We Fell is a novel of profound psychological insight and tension. It is Dennis Lehane at his very best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Good! I hesitated reading this one for a bit - not for any specific reason, but just because it kept being passed by for other books - but, wow. It is so well written and the story is so captivating. You won't want to put it down once you start it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It! My friend lent me this book to read after she finished. While she felt there were some areas that were slow, I felt the opposite. I couldn't wait to find out where the story was headed and I liked how smaller story lines were discussed and closed neatly. Great suspenseful read that I could not wait to finish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Don’t be discouraged by the slow start. Just be sure to buckle up because the ride is adrenaline-charged I am a self-professed Dennis Lehane fan and I have been reading him since the first Kenzie-Gennaro novels. Since We Fell is a departure for Lehane in that it is more of a psychological thriller along the lines of Paula Hawkins (Girl on the Train) or Clare Mackintosh (I Let You Go). His foray into this field is an overwhelming success particularly because it is better written that many of the novels in this genre. The writing style is exceptional and the human connections are so tangible and personal, The book starts slowly and deliberately and is focused on the protagonist’s (Rachel) battle with an over-controlling mother and her search for her father. In the second act she battles agoraphobia. This leisurely approach is still effective because Lehane creates such interesting characters and a plot that ensures the reader will remain engaged. The last half of the book switches into overdrive and it is time to hang on for an exhilarating and exciting ride. It is pure enjoyment. Lehane transforms his tale from a psychological mystery to an intriguing story of murder and dishonesty. I read the book in one day and the speed at which I read seemed to match the pace of the story. It should appeal to fans of psychological dramas that may not have been exposed to Lehane in the past while still hitting the mark with readers of crime fiction.
