The stellar fourth book in Garth Nix's masterpiece series

Following their adventures in the Border Sea, Arthur and Leaf head for home. But only Leaf gets through the Front Door. Arthur is blocked because someone - or something - has assumed his identity and is taking over his life.

Before Arthur can take action, he is drafted by Sir Thursday and forced to join the Glorious Army of the Architect. While Leaf tries to banish Arthur's doppleganger on earth, Arthur must survive his basic training, avoid getting posted to the Front and work out how he can free Part Four of the Will . . .

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as good I really enjoyed this series. This book wasn't as good as the previous ones (or the later ones), but I found myself so invested in the story that I couldn't put it down either.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A fast-paced fantasy! Mr. Nix has written another story in the Keys to the Kingdom series and this time we have our young hero, Arthur, as an unwilling recruit in the Denizen army. The novel wastes no time getting him into this predicament and he quickly realizes that he is without any real allies while he is at boot camp. Furthermore, the leader of the entire army, Sir Thursday, wishes him dead. If that isn't bad enough, his enemies have installed an evil doppelganger back on Earth to replace him and this clone is going around spreading a contagious mind-control plague. Arthur has to entrust his long-suffering friend, Leaf, to help him out back home while he endures the rigorous military training. Arthur ends up in battle halfway through the tale with an invading horde of Nithlings - creatures made of nothingness - who are being led by a rebellious son of the Architect (sort of a Lucifer-like character). The book reads very fast and light and it is up to Mr. Nix's high standards as always. At times the story seems a little too rushed as though there were too many plot devices in too short a time. An enjoyable addition to the series all in all.
